Sens. Durbin & Biden Slam ashcroft! (Google News link)
Chicago Sun Times (according to Google News) ^

Posted on 06/09/2004 7:04:11 PM PDT by narses

our democratic senators are finally applying the desperately needed checks and balances regarding the out of control and lawless bu$hit administration!

in regard to the ridiculous stonewalling and secrecy over their absurd torture memos:

"Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) warned Ashcroft that his refusal might have consequences.

In one testy exchange, Biden snapped, "Well, general, that means you may be in contempt of Congress."

"You've got to have a reason not to answer our questions, as you know from sitting up here," Biden told Ashcroft, a former senator.

"If such a memo existed . . . is that good law? . . . Do you think that torture might be justified?" Biden demanded.

"I condemn torture," Ashcroft responded. "I don't think it's productive, let alone justified."

Biden told Ashcroft that prohibitions against torture are intended to "protect my son in the military." Ashcroft said he needed no reminder because his son has been on active duty in the Persian Gulf.

Durbin also challenged Ashcroft's reasoning.

'Sir, attorney general, with all due respect, your personal belief is not a law, and you are not citing a law and you are not claiming executive privilege," Durbin said. "And, frankly, that is what contempt of Congress is all about.'"

"Your personal belief is NOT a law."

Precisely. PARSING, cheating, scamming, lying, going around laws (both national and international) THESE are the marks of a dangerous and lawless administration.

the fact that it's taken this long for our Senate to ask the tough questions and demand accountability to the law is astonishing and weak.

It's obvious they have something to hide with these memos!

Why is the Sun-Times still writing about the Clinton administration?

I saw a part of Biden's response, the hate that you could see seething through his teeth was absolutely uncalled for. Ashcroft remained calm and collected, easily the more professional of the two.

Nice, I love how petty liberal pissing & moaning is reported as "slamming" or "lambasting" the conservative target. To slam (or lambaste) somebody, you have to at least be in the ballpark with criticism. The liberal media very rarely is.

I think it's just this link. I've clicked a few other articles and they're fine. I did double take on this one though, just before you posted it.

Hold on people. This is NOT a Chicago Sun-Times (or Google) article.

What it is a posting from some mope on the Sun-Times political conversation page. Nothing more than a Sun-Times Blog, or their version of the DU.
