Heh. I was dragged out of my 9th-grade spanish class in 1984, when VP Bush came to town, and my high school, campaigning for Reagan. There was some "miscommunication" between myself and my nosy teacher who somehow came up with the silly idea that I, a 14 year old boy, was somehow a threat to the VP... now, to keep it short...

Needless to say, I was handcuffed, and kept under watch in the school office, as they tried to determine how much of a "threat" I really was, while my fellow students were in the assembly listening to Bush speak. I wanted to be there, too, and so I did what any kid would have done - waited until I had a few seconds where I wasn't being watched, and bolted out the door...

Thanks to a friendly school janitor who thought my friends had cuffed me as a joke, I was able to get the hancuffs off, sneak the back way into the assembly, came out behind the stage... Uh-oh. I was about 20 feet from the Vice President and thought "I'll just mosey along the very edge of the stage and head on over there to sit with my friends, and the next thing I know I was under a really big pile of really big embarrassed men...

My mother was seriously unthrilled at being called at work to come deal with her errant son. A few of the USSS guys were also seriously unthrilled at the chewing out they got for not being able to keep a 14-year old kid under control...

Incidently, this issue came up when I joined the navy a few years later and needed a security clearance...

Ah, the good old days...
