Reagan's Family Criticizes Use Of Reagan In Anti-Kerry Ad
WXII12 ^ | 6/16/04

Posted on 06/16/2004 11:53:30 AM PDT by areafiftyone

WASHINGTON -- Ronald Reagan's family is criticizing the use of the late president's image in a conservative political ad endorsing President George W. Bush.

The ad comparing Bush's war on terror with Reagan's battle against communism is being run by the conservative interest groupClub for Growth starting Wednesday. It shows footage of Reagan at the Berlin Wall, and Bush at ground zero.

The ad also said Democratic presidential contender John Kerry was "wrong then, wrong now" on national security.

A Reagan family spokeswoman said the group does not have permission to use Reagan's image in the ad because doing so implies his endorsement.

Club for Growth said it wants to show how similar Bush and Reagan have been "in terms of fighting evil." A Kerry spokesman said it's "pretty sad" that Bush supporters are already politicizing the nation's farewell to Reagan.

Sorry, but Reagan belongs to all of us now. If I want to use his or JFK's image in an ad I will do it and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

If my opponent want's to use Carter or Clinton's image in an ad, that's fine too.

I think what this brouhaha is all about is that we simply have much better choices than they do. Reagan's greatness is obvious and Republican, and JFK's ideas were very very Republican by today's standards.

Implies his endorsement? Um, hello? Reagan was a REPUBLICAN and his VP was Bush's father. I think it is fair to imply his endorsement. But what is implied in this complaint is that the left has friends in the Reagan family and now that daddy's dead, they are going to be vocal. That's their right, but they can't rewrite who their daddy was.

Has there been a single ad released by the Bush campaign that someone on the left (and their media cohorts) hasn't complained about? It's so overdone that it's getting almost humorous.

I agree completely. That may have been Ron and Patti's dad up there at the Berlin Wall, but he was there representing you and me. We were paying for him to be there saying what he was saying. I'm sure HE would have agreed with me.

Ron and Patti, please go get jobs, have babies, raise your families, but stay out of our faces.

America transferred it's love for Ronald Reagan to his wife this past week.

That affection can be taken back in a heartbeat. Something the Reagan family ought to keep in mind.

We can honor and revere Ronald Reagan and revert to our earlier opinions of his chilren and his wife.

I think this is coming from Ron Reagan Jr's mouth. He was mouthing off last week about Bush using his father's name. I forgot what show he was on. Ron Reagan Jr. is a total liberal idiot who hates Bush. Expect more of it. Ron Reagan is an unabashed Kerry supporter.

The Military is not some faceless, nameless, undifferentiated mass of nobodies. They are the sons and daughters of flesh and blood Americans. Whenever Kerry or any politician stabs the Military in the back, he cannot expect that the status quo will remain intact. I think that this truly shabby behavior on Kerry's part, must be re iterated at every possible point in the campaign.

Better to call him Little Ronnie, both for accuracy and to diminish him as the 46-year-old adult he is supposed to be. His name is Ronald Prescott Reagan. His father's name is Ronald Wilson Reagan. Little Ronnie is not a junior, but he is a very little person.

To be "proper" Nancy Reagan should have been asked for permission being this close to President Reagan's death.

It is called "GOOD MANNERS" and has nothing to do with leftists sounding 'rights' to publish since he's a public figure, etc etc etc.

Reagan would have never approved of using another recently deceased's picture or words without approval first - he was a GENTLEMAN!

No it doesn't, no more than using George Washington's image in an ad implies his endorsement.

I'm sorry if someone in the family is upset by this, but without Reagan himself speaking against the use of the image, it's a reasonable thing to do.

Shalom.

Very well put. As hard as I tried, I just could not feel bad for Patti. I can not put my finger on it, but it seemed like she was just going through the motions. No real emotion about the situation.

I found it interesting, the natural children of Ronald has no respect for the man. The adopted child, Michael, has a love and loyalty to the Reagan family. He appreciates what they did for him and knows the value of family love. He wasn't born into it, he was blessed enough to be chosen.

Remember Kerry's veterans ads that backfired in Texas? This is similar.

I like Club for Growth, but this was stupid. The timing was bad for one. Unless Nancy gave permission(which I believe is proper protocol in this), it leaves a big opening.

Ron Jr is a leftist. So is Patti. They will obviously fire shots since it's family business to them.

Reagan was a great president. However, Club for Growth should not use Reagan to run on. Bush has his own record. Kerry has his own record. That is what should be run on.

We wouldn't want them to "use" him like one of his family members did during the funeral in California by making a political speech against President Bush. Ron, shut up, it is not about you! Just because you and Patti made sure that you were in all the photos while Michael was seen far behind doesn't mean that you get to dictate to the rest of the country. You may be your mother's favorite but you aren't to the rest of the country. I'm sure since you and Patti (the stripper) were so kind to your father while he was alive you are really worried about his image now. That is unless it was used by John Kerry or another of the liberal elite candidates that you favor.

A lot of posts here seem to miss your point, that it IS tacky to use the image of a guy only a few days in the ground. Many point out that he is a public figure and thus his image is fair play, which may be technically correct in that the family has no say. They seem to miss that many people (including myself) think it is tasteless.

If it were clinton doing this with a similar popular democrat politican (I know, there are none anymore) 5 days in the grave, would he be supported as such? If clinton/gore had used JFK Jr's imagine under similar circumstances and timing, would it have been ok with people here?

Reagan Berlin Wall Speech is "Public Domain" and not the property of RR's family. It was given in a very public forum in his role as President of the United States and therefore belongs to the people.

Bush has done the same with Kerry's "I voted for it before I voted against it". Both are public domain. Just as Michael Moore's use of the film of GW in the classroom.

I tend to agree. Not a word had to be said. Most Americans got the similarities (and differences) between Bush and Reagan by watching the events last week and hearing about the challenges that Reagan faced.

Having said that, I think it was a foot race. Make no mistake about it, just as the partisan media sought to recast "all" of the 9/11 families as opposing Bush by using a small minority of 9/11 families (the Jersey Bimbs), they will seek to recast Reagan through select members of his family. How long before Lil Ronnie and Patti start coming out with "before he died, our father expressed regret that he had not stayed in the Democrat Party and expressed his outrage for the illegal war Bush started with Iraq."

This could get pretty ugly as I am fairly sure there is another one of Ronald Wilson Reagan's children out there, albeit adopted, who will not sit still for this.

The "Reagan Family" (whatever that is) can kiss my butt. Who gives a damn what they think? Ronald Reagan was the people's President. We all know what he stood for, and were he alive and conscious today he would urge all Americans to vote for George W. Bush. We don't need ultra-leftwingers Ron Jr and Patti to give us permission to use RWR's image, words, or stated beliefs in any ad.

The Kennedys tried to do this when Club for Growth ran a JFK tax cut ad in 2001. Screw 'em.
