DETROIT (AP) Auto, steel and mine workers should not be forced to train their overseas replacements, John Kerry said Thursday night at a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser.
The Democratic presidential candidate told his supporters that George Bush has presided over the loss of thousands of well-paying industrial jobs and their replacement with low-paying work in the service sector.
Following an introduction from Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who sponsored the dinner with husband Dan Mulhern, Kerry acknowledged the presence of United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger and Teamsters leader James P. Hoffa.
Kerry told them he will work to preserve the role of union labor in the nation's economy.
"I want those cars made by Americans, by UAW members, made in Detroit, made in the United States of America," Kerry said.
The evening fund-raiser at the Marriott Detroit Renaissance Center followed an appearance at a fund-raiser for U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Detroit, and a speech to the Michigan AFL-CIO.
The candidate's focus on jobs came as no surprise in Michigan, where the unemployment rate for May jumped to 6.5 percent, four-tenths of a percentage point higher than April and 0.9 points above the May national rate of 5.6 percent.
In a telephone interview Wednesday, Kerry said the Bush administration could easily create more jobs by changing its policies.
"Just investing in Detroit itself, where the mayor has lots of major infrastructure projects, you could put a lot of people to work tomorrow if you put the money into that. But this administration has not been willing to do that," Kerry said.
In Detroit City - 94% Democrat, there were about 50-75 of us(and we were more diverse than Johnny's three) there ready to greet Johnny's visit to a $1000 plate dinner.
On the other side, there were 3 people there with Kerry signs outside. All of them white men if I may add. One of them was protesting the loss of manufacting jobs. I wish I knew what they were....
The motorcade had to go right past us. This is where I wish I had my camera. We all saw Johnny in person. As he turned left toward the Ren Cen he gave us all a dorky sarcastic thumbs up and goofy grin.(Something like a Diamond Dallas Page WWE grin or out of Saturday Night Live) It would have been a perfect picture to post.

Oh, and I know one place I will not patronize with my business next time I'm downtown. Tom's Oyster Bar. They are backing Kerry and had a really bad band sing pro-Johnny songs we could hear outside.
BTW...Congrats!
What the hell is your plan Johnny? You had 20 years in the senate to come up with one.
"I want those cars made by Americans, by UAW members, made in Detroit, made in the United States of America," Kerry said.
Why did you vote for NAFTA/GATT and MFN for China, Johnny?
Just investing in Detroit itself, where the mayor has lots of major infrastructure projects, you could put a lot of people to work tomorrow if you put the money into that. But this administration has not been willing to do that," Kerry said.
Because he has a senate full of assclowns fillibustering everything.
Like your (oh, sorry) like your family's SUV?
"I want those cars made by Americans, by UAW members, made in Detroit, made in the United States of America," Kerry said.
The challenge is selling those cars in the United States.
You're on to something..Last night, couldn't sleep, woke up about 3am, and put on C-span..(which is the GREATEST cure for insomnia in the world, BTW..)..they were replaying Kerry's address to the NJ AFL-CIO...he was awful, and there ws NO, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA enthusiasm in the room
John Kerry's platform is "I'm not Bush". He has no plans, no ideas, and he's more boring than a poetry reading at Barnes & Noble (at least I find that boring).
Kerry's admitted to owning three Chrysler products with at least one (Chrysler 300M) being made in Canada.
The man's a lunatic.
"I want those cars made by Americans, by UAW members, made in Detroit, made in the United States of America," Kerry said.
Quiz time....which candidate for President vote for NAFTA and virtually every other US trade agreement?
Buy American and save those Detroit jobs there Johnny!

You mean like Chrysler?
Kerry has said:
I own a Chrysler 300M. And my wife has a number of different cars in some different locations
all my cars are American.
While not mentioning his wifes Audi, Kerry did list several other cars his family owns. We have a Chrysler Town & Country van, a minivan, a Chrysler PT Cruiser, and a Chrysler 300M.
The 300M is made in Canada, the PT Cruiser is made in Toluca, Mexico, and the Town & Country was made in both America and Canada.
Today I got a Kerry request for fund. Being the mean SOB that I am, I returned the request, which was pre-stamped by Kerry. I sent the SOB about 35 pennies, scotch taped to the return form and super glued together in bunches of five. I figure the mailing weight alone of my "donation" will costs the DNC at least $1.20, if not more.
Yes! I am proud of myself and look forward to the next effort.
How could people who lost their jobs afford attending $1000 a plate event?
Especially since I've always had a Ford.
Panhandling the welfare lines!
What are "those" cars, most of his energy plans would probably be the final nails in the US auto industry.
He was supposed to have a campaign rally in Detroit before the fundraiser (probably for the 3 supporters you saw) but they had to cancel it because of the Pistons victory parade. I just watched a replay of that and saw Granholm address the huge crowd. There seemed to be at least half boos or groans.
