Monica flees NY, stung by Bill's cold words
The Irish Independent ^ | June 20, 2004 | ORLA HEALY in New York

Posted on 06/20/2004 2:58:38 AM PDT by aculeus

IN ONE of the smartest decisions of her life, Monica Lewinsky fled New York City on Wednesday night, hours after Bill Clinton confessed he trysted with her simply "because I could".

The former White House intern is said to be mortified and upset by Clinton's cold description of their affair.

The platoon of paparazzi outside her downtown apartment didn't help her mood.

Ironically, Lewinsky is expected to attend a wedding in Arkansas on Tuesday, the day Bill Clinton launches his mega-hyped White House memoir, My Life, in Manhattan.

Set to become the political bestseller of the year, the former President's book is expected to outsell wife Hillary's autobiography, Living History, which racked up sales of 600,000 copies in its first week last year. Slick Willie, nevertheless, isn't taking anything for granted. In order to justify his $12 million advance, Mr Clinton needs to sell at least 2m copies of the hardcover book.

In advance leaks from an interview to be broadcast on CBS tonight, Clinton gives the press the tantalising soundbites they want while at the same time giving the public their first glimpse at his deep sense of self-reproach over the Lewinsky affair. Both tactics are necessary to sell his $35 book.

In leaks made public on Friday, Clinton describes how the First Lady looked like she had been punched in the gut the morning he told her about his liaison with Lewinsky and how he spent the following two months sleeping on the couch. Mr Clinton reportedly also writes that he attributes problems during his upbringing as contributing to a self-destructive streak that tends to act up when he's tired, angry or feeling alone.

On Friday, the promotional juggernaut lost some of the sizzle it had built up during the week when AOL online released the first audio excerpt from the memories.

Those who tuned in expecting deep dish were treated to a folksy anecdote from Clinton about the "amazing moment" he shook President John F Kennedy's hand in 1963. "I'm sure he was aware that everyone would be looking for the racy bits, and he wants to come out of the gate first as a statesman-like figure," said Stan Baker, editor of Publisher's Weekly. Further AOL extracts, such as tomorrow's, entitled "Marriage remains", may draw higher ratings.

It was about what she could do for him, not what he could do for her. No one would ever call their arrangement an act of love. It was really a matter of male convenience and I have scant sympathy for any woman who sells herself to a man for so little.

Did you read the AP story where Clinton claims in the book that the first thing he told President-elect GW Bush was that Osama Bin Laden was the biggest threat to America and that he claims GW ignored him and changed the subject?

For that lie alone, Clinton should be shamed for the next 9 weeks.

I'd feel worse for her if she hadn't used the scandal to turn herself into a C level celebrity.
I'm not asking for a return to the scarlet letter but I wish we could go back to a time where people would show shame for what they did and not turn scandal into book deals and television appearances. (This goes for him too.)

"IF" this was just about a "male" and a "woman" I would totally agree.

However, I think when the situation is the President of the US over 50 and a "silly" young woman, under 25, has the elements of "sex" abuse, kinda like that prison in Iraq.

Seems to me there is a plausible case for Monica to file suit for damages with old bj's words, cause she protected his sorry @ss and this is the thanks she gets.

I still remember Monica's highly educated parents relating how they were proud of their daughter and had no problem with Slick. So she got f''d in her mouth and went on to sell cosmetics or whatever. White trash in the oval office.

He really is deluded. His problem is that he is trying to act out these roles rather than being what he is. But when your constituency is a cluster of groups who each have nothing in common except they all hold their noses and vote together, you get a man playing multiple roles.

Union people, Blacks, Gays/lesbians, militant feminists, professors/elites, abortionists, the disadvantaged, Senior Citizens. They all have little in common.

You're forgetting that she thought it was love and that he'd leave Hillary for her.

She was foolish, he was (and is) a scoundrel.

hehe I still got alot of Monica jokes from 1998.

Monica Lewinsky in a statement released today, countered President Clinton's firm denial:

I have had enough! This whole experience has left a bitter taste in my mouth and I can't stomach any more. I feel as if I am getting the shaft, that this ugly matter has come to a head and blown up in my face. This may be a load to handle, but when things are hard, that is when I am at my best. I have faced hard things in the past and I know what is coming. I will meet the challenge the only way I know how: head on. I have licked bigger things than this before, and I will again. No one will ever be able to say that Monica Lewinsky isn't a finisher, that she quit before the job was done. I will work non-stop and fight this blow by blow, until I am wiped clean of this dirty affair. I will not be stained by it. As for Bill Clinton, I hope he gets a stiff penalty. Thank you

I suspect it's because she probably got paid not to write a book.

Johnny Cochran to Bill Clinton. If thats your stain, then you must explain.

Bill and Hillary Clinton are on a sinking ship. Who gets saved? The Nation.

Bill Clinton when asked to compare Monica Lewinsky to Paula Jones. Clinton said, close but no cigar.

Did you hear, Monica Lewinsky was in a car accident. She blew a tire.

What is Bill Clinton's and Gary Condit's worst nightmare? An intern with braces.

Why did Bill Clinton quit the Saxaphone? So he could play the Harmonica.

What did Clinton say the night the Lewinsky story broke? What a bad trip.

Clinton has decided to recruit interns from only 4 colleges. Morehead, Oral Roberts, Ball State and Brigham young.

Whats the difference between George Washington, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton?

Washington couldn't tell a lie, Nixon couldn't tell the truth and Clinton doesn't know the difference.
