Amber Alert Underway for Missing South Florida Girl

Miami, FL -- Police were searching early Tuesday morning for a 5-year-old girl who they said was abducted from her Hollywood home when an unidentified man claiming to be a police officer took her at gunpoint.

Elizabeth Lopez was sleeping when a white man with a handgun and a police badge knocked at the door of her apartment shortly after
10 p.m. Monday, said Carlos Negron, a Hollywood police spokesman.

When Lopez's mother answered the door, the man, who was about 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, said he wanted to take her child. The woman did not know the suspect, and police are investigating how he
knew Elizabeth was at the home, Negron said.

Elizabeth is 3-foot-5 and 40 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a white short-sleeve shirt with the word
"Army" on the front, blue pants and pink Barbie sandals.

The armed man forced the girl to take a change clothes -- a blue T-shirt with a fish on the front, a long blue skirt, and a white beach hat -- before leaving, according to the Florida
Department of Law Enforcement.

The abductor was in his mid-30s, with gray hair and hazel eyes, Negron said. He was wearing a white short-sleeve shirt, a blue
vest, black jeans and black boots.

If they truly wanted citizens to help they could post more info such as address, mothers name, fathers name etc. There are a lot of web detectives out here who would love to help.

Well, maybe I'm wrong about this, but there is something strange here. They took enough time for the kid to change clothes and what did the mother do? I'd like to think you'd have to actually shoot me to get my kid, but maybe I'm wrong.

I was thinknig the same thing, I am the mother of a 5 year old also. Don't know the circumstances over there, he would have had to shoot me as well. This seems odd for a stranger adbuction, perhaps this loaser was working on the behalf of an estranged father.

Shoot me? He would have to get a kill shot on me. Nothing short of that would stop me when it comes to my kids.

Something stinks here, I wonder what the rest of the story is.

Your point is well taken

I wonder if a custody battle going on between this mother and a possible estranged father? Sometimes a parent, who is in danger of losing their child by court order, will claim that their child "disappeared"

The abductor only took a change of clothes for the child (i.e. took the clothes along); he didn't hang around to have her actually change into them.

Amber Alert Hollywood Florida Update Urgent
Grandparents sought after Amber Alert issued for missing Hollywood girl

HOLLYWOOD -- Police now say the case of a little girl who was believed abducted last night could be a family affair.

Elizabeth Lopez Investigators have been talking to the mother of 5-year-old Elizabeth Lopez since late last night when she told them a man claiming to be a police officer abducted the child from her Hollywood apartment.

The whereabouts of Elizabeth Lopez remains unknown and police continue their efforts to find her.

Alicia Sylvia DeLopez, left, and Edgar Lopez (Hollywood Police) Jun 22, 2004

They now say the woman has told them her own parents may have orchestrated the abduction ---perhaps hiring someone to abduct the child--- in an attempt to take her daughter out of the country.

Police identified the child's maternal grandparents as Edgar Lopez, 71, and his wife Alicia Sylvia DeLopez, 62, and said they want to question them.

Elizabeth went missing around 10:15 p.m. Monday.

The child is described as 3-foot5, 40 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. She was wearing blue pants, a white shirt with "army" on the front and pink Barbie sandals that light up in front.

Here's what police initially reported happening:

The child's mother said a man knocked at the front door of their apartment in the 3500 block of Washington Street. When she answered, he showed a police badge, pointed a gun at her and forced himself inside the apartment. He asked for the child. The mother, fearing for their safety, went to the bedroom and brought the child to the living room.

The armed man forced the girl to take a change of clothes -- a blue T-shirt with a fish on the front, a long blue skirt, and a white beach hat -- before leaving, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The suspect the took the child and fled, according to the police report.

The suspect was described as a white male, 36 to 40 years old, 6-foot-2, 220 pounds with gray hair and hazel eyes, according to police. He was wearing a white short sleeve shirt, a blue pullover or vest, black jeans and black boots, and was armed with a handgun.

Police issued an Amber Alert shortly after they were alerted. It covers Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

The Amber Alert system uses the state's emergency notification process to give the media a description of a missing child and of a suspect's vehicle. That description is also displayed on electronic highway signs.

It is named for 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped and killed in Arlington, Texas, in 1996 and have been instituted in the 48 contiguous states. Hawaii and Alaska are working on their systems.

Anyone with information should call the Hollywood Police Department (954) 967-4357 or Crime Stoppers (954) 493-TIPS.

Heard about this one the radio a short while ago. They believe the grandparents may be involved--and trying to get the girl out of the country.

On a lighter note--the reporter described her as 5 years old, and 3.5 inches tall.

When Lopez's mother answered the door, the man, who was about 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, said he wanted to take her child. The woman did not know the suspect, and police are investigating how he knew Elizabeth was at the home, Negron said.

It seems that a lot of info is lacking when these Alerts are first issued... sometimes the cops don't want to let on exactly how much they know about the suspected perps.

The story sounded fishy. If her grandparents are as doting as most, she is at least safe and happy. I'll bet that the child's grandparents snatched her out of a bad situation such as dope, alcoholism, abusive mother's boyfriend or all of the above.

Or I was thinking maybe the mother is splitting with the father and the grandparents had someone take the child from the mother, so their son won't lose his child.

Hopefully this will end soon, once pics are posted they're dead meat IMO. Most everyone will keep an eye out for a missing child.

The world is a dangerous and confusing place. Whatever the reasons the grandparents may have for taking her (if they have her) it's sad and inexucusable that they would put her in such a terrifying situation, no matter how much they love her.

They now say the woman has told them her own parents may have orchestrated the abduction ---perhaps hiring someone to abduct the child--- in an attempt to take her daughter out of the country.

I don't think they are from a US state --- probably a foreign country and the little girl is safe with them. It sounds liks a hispanic custody battle --- often the mothers will leave their children with their own parents to raise while they party and enjoy their freedom. Later they change their mind and decide they want the child and it can be very heart-breaking for the grandparents who have been raising the child.

I wonder if the child is a citizen --- if not the whole thing should be settled back in the home country.
