A charity founded by the late diet doctor Robert C. Atkins stands to inherit his vast fortune and plans to bankroll a barrage of studies championing his popular low-carbohydrate diet, positioning it to dominate diet research at a time when an unprecedented number of Americans are seeking weight-loss guidance.

With Atkins's estate worth an estimated $600 million, the Robert C. Atkins Foundation will eventually become the largest private supporter of dieting research in the United States. Its budget could rival what the federal government now spends on studying diets.

It is amazing how hateful many people are of Atkins. Health professionals constantly are on the media mischaracterizing Atkins and telling us how dangerous his diet is. Well it is a lot less dangerous than the ultra-carb-rich diet they have been pushing for years.

Well, my husband and I have been on Atkins since the first week of March and it does work! The food is great and you never feel hungry. We will continue to stay on Atkins simply because it's healthier and it truly does change your outlook on life and on the kinds of food you choose to eat.

Charity specialists interviewed could not cite another example like the Atkins case, in which a charity and company have such a similar and narrow focus

Th sugar industry is a big long time example.

It's not personal. Health professionals would be remiss if they didn't address the Atkins craze. Fad diets may help slough off few watery pounds here and there, but are no substitute for balanced eating habits and regular excercise.

It isn't personal, but it is institutional. The current recommended balance diet is way too carb-heavy. Maybe Atkins is too extreme one way, but there is plenty of data that suggests the current FDA recommendations are out of whack. There is a huge resistance to change which results in attacking the messenger instead of fixing the problem.

The so called balanced diet added 40lbs to my petite frame beginning in the late 1980's. I ate carbs, carbs and more healthy carbs. I ate margerine-instead of butter and very little meat. I was hungry most of the time (except when I binged because of this God-awful diet). No healthy person should eat 6 or 7 servings of grain which is what the food pyramid calls for...I almost became a diabetic, my knees ached so badly I could barely walk sometimes (almost had to give up tennis/only sport I enjoy). I have been on Atkins since January-losing weight slowly-about 40 lbs gone. I feel great and my latest checkup revealed lower cholesterol and a much better blood sugar result. Atkins is not a fad diet. It has been around for about 30 years. I have met slim, healthy people who have been living on Atkins since then. I will never go back to eating high carb. This is a way of life-not a fad. Also, so called health professionals are wrong about the benefits of the so called (high carb) balanced diet-which will kill you eventually. It is not a matter of fat vs slim. Plenty of thin people get diabetes these days-due to excessive carb consumption.

Lift weights. Start at any age. Any diet that does not include strength training will cause muscle loss and you will get fat all over again and again...
