Iran seeks swap of Brits for suicide attackers

Report says 40 Revolutionary Guard 'volunteers' held by UK

Iran apprehended British military personnel and Navy vessels earlier this week in order to secure release of 40 "suicide operations volunteers" held by the UK, according to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard source.

The source told the London Arabic-language daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the British Army command in Iraq received the demand from the Revolutionary Guard, reported the Middle East Media Research Institute.

According to the source, the content of the message was very simple: "Release our comrades, whom you are holding, and we will release your soldiers."

Can't believe we're up to thread 11. I have a follow-up on the heavily armored cops at Times Square yesterday. This morning they weren't there but the Armed Forces Recruiting Station was yellow taped off. I'm guessing there was some sort of a direct threat the military personnel and the facility. I know they are there to protect us but it still gives one an eerie sense that all is not well. It really hit home for me that we are at war and still at great risk. I was just reading the thread about the WMD being smuggled out of Iraq.

Keep eyes peeled for the hospital name...it was a residential neigborhood. There is reportedly a private British hospital in Istanbul that could have been the target.

Given the NATO gathering, one wonders if the timer on the hotel bomb was off or whether this is just a welcome mat.

MTA To Update Posters Urging Commuter Vigilance

NEW YORK -- The Metropolitan Transportation's campaign urging commuters to report suspicious activity on trains and buses is being updated to include photographs of unattended bags.

The agency, which has posted warnings that read "If You See Something, Say Something" for the past 18 months, plans to unveil new signs that feature images and urge riders to "Be suspicious of anything unattended."

Katherine Lapp, the MTA's executive director, said the new signs will soon be posted in subways, buses and commuter train cars. She said the agency would be prepared to handle false alarms.

The revised campaign stems in part from the Madrid bombings in March, in which backpacks were used to hold bombs that exploded on four commuter trains, killing 191 people.

Deputies question, clear gloved man

JACKSON -- A man who aroused suspicions Tuesday when he emerged from the woods near a popular trail wearing rubber gloves talked to law enforcement officials on Wednesday, and they said he had an explanation for everything.

Teton County Sheriff's Captain Jim Whalen said the man was pulled over at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Jackson State Bank on Buffalo Way in Jackson. The man told deputies he wears gloves when using the popular Cache Creek because he does push-ups along the trail.

He was also seen carrying a Mountain Dew bottle containing a brown liquid, which the man said was iced tea.

"He was very cooperative," Whalen said. "He let the deputies search his car."

Deputies described the vehicle as being "very messy" and film canisters and plastic bags were searched. Nothing was found. (snip)

Deputies did, however, describe the man as "peculiar."

The terror leader blamed for executing and beheading hostages in Iraq is a nice man who could not kill women and children, his wife said today.

Al-Qaida ally Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi has been blamed for several deadly attacks on coalition forces in Iraq.

Statements attributed to the Jordanian have claimed responsibility for executing hostages in Iraq.

One recent statement included a threat to kill Iraq’s interim prime minister, Iyad Allawi.

But his wife Umm Mohammed told a Jordanian newspaper: “There’s no way that my husband could be a terrorist. He is friendly and a good man,

“He would not recommend the killings of children, women and elderly people as they’re trying to portray him,” she said at the family’s home in Zarqa, near the Jordanian capital Amman.

Al-Zarqawi, aged 38, whose real name is Ahmad Fadhil Nazzal al-Khalayleh, is on the US most wanted list.

Intelligence officials say al-Zarqawi is believed to have at least 2,000 militants working for him in Iraq.

Al-Zarqawi is accused of masterminding a foiled terror attack that targeted the intelligence department, the prime minister’s office and the US Embassy in Amman.

Authorities uncovered the plot in April and arrested six militants who said in televised confessions that they had plotted chemical attacks in Jordan under direct instructions from al-Zarqawi.

His wife said she has not heard from her husband since he left Jordan for Afghanistan in 1999.
