WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Although there hasn't been a draft in more than 30 years, 22-year-old Minneapolis college graduate Nathan Mittelstaedt is worried that he might be forced into military service.

He's not alone.

Despite shaky evidence -- and denials by top officials -- Mittelstaedt and many other young people in Minnesota and across the nation are convinced that a draft is secretly in the works. Through mass e-mails and Internet sites, the word is going out that as early as next June, men and women as old as 34 will be subject to random, mandatory military service.

It isn't true, of course. We're only going to draft leftists. And use them unarmed, in human wave attacks against entrenched enemy machine guns. Sssshhhhh! It's a secret!

THE PLAN IS ALL CHARLIE RANGEL'S!!!!

He's the putz who introduced the bill.

I've had LLL'ers tell me the same crap - they shut their mouths after I show them Rangel's sponsorship of the bill.

Whine bags. They want the protections of this country. To hide behind the flag, the military, the protections. But, these whine bags will not join, and will run if drafted. NO DRAFT! The military does not need the anti-war cry babies of the Vietnam era. We enlistees did just fine.

Widespread rumors about reinstating the draft and the upcoming presidential election are completely unrelated phenomena, I guess.

"Officials are finding the rumors difficult to quash."

Because it is true. "Officials" like Rangel are.

They are creating a "wedge issue" to get a knee-jerk response from their base, and it's working.

It's based on ignorance. We had force levels twice the size as now in the 80's and 90's without a draft.

Good way for the liberals to stir up the troops. It's a variant on stock traders who plant false negative rumors so a stock they are short will fall. Unfortunately, it is a tactic that people who don't follow politics or the news can easily fall for.

Oh my goodness, I just realized that this is really PART OF THE PLAN! Seriously!

Rangel doesn't want the draft, no democrat REALLY does. What they want to do is to plant the idea, the rumour, that a draft is coming soon.. Well, which party do you want in power in case of a draft? Democrats, the party of wusses, OF COURSE.

Folks, this is NOT an accident. Someone pass me a pack of gum, I am gonna need the foil wrapping..

From the Selective Service website:

"Notwithstanding recent stories in the news media and on the Internet, Selective Service is not getting ready to conduct a draft for the U.S. Armed Forces -- either with a special skills or regular draft. Rather, the Agency remains prepared to manage a draft if and when the President and the Congress so direct. This responsibility has been ongoing since 1980 and is nothing new. Further, both the President and the Secretary of Defense have stated on more than one occasion that there is no need for a draft for the War on Terrorism or any likely contingency, such as Iraq. Additionally, the Congress has not acted on any proposed legislation to reinstate a draft. Therefore, Selective Service continues to refine its plans to be prepared as is required by law, and to register young men who are ages 18 through 25."

It's just not going to happen," said Dan Amon, an agency spokesman. "There's no interest whatsoever in Congress.

That's not quite true. The Rats have 2 bills (one in each house)calling for a draft.

Bills S. 89 in the U.S. Senate and H.R. 163 in the House of Representatives introduced early last year, which comprise the National Service Act of 2003, are aimed at restoring equity within the draft. The bills state: To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

House bill is sponsored by Charlie Rangel, Mr. MCDERMOTT, Mr. CONYERS, Mr. LEWIS of Georgia, Mr. STARK, and Mr. ABERCROMBIE.

The Senate bill was sponsored by Hollings.

What would we do with draftees?

Our whole military is becomming elite units of very agressive volunteer fighters supported by highly trained volunteer technicians.

There is no room for cannon fodder in that scenario.

Of course the thought is assinine, as are those who foster it. My daughter had to wait nearly 8 mos for a training position to open up, and even then didn't get the MOS she wanted and qualified for becasue no slots were unfilled. She graduated BCT at Ft Leonard Wood last week and it was one of the most inspiring things I have seen. I have never seen so many admirable young Americans in one place in my life. All volunteers, all motivated. all pround to be Americans. The whole issue of the draft is insulting to them.

I think if they were going to reinstate the draft, a lot of people would come forward and sign up. My husband would. They don't want him right now because he is the providor of the family and with a wife and 3 boys, they don't pay enough (told him that)
They wanted to know if we would sign 2 boys over to family members though. Then they would take him. LOL. He respectfully declined, but we would do it if asked by our country in need.

Anyway, I also know some retirees who have said they would be glad to go back in in support roles also.

Days after 9/11, a friend (barely) told me that her 22 yr. old son wanted her to take him out into the ocean on their boat so he couldn't be found and drafted.

I heard this from others with sons as well.

Pathetic to say the least. And we live in NJ where the impact was great and in both cases the families were impacted by the attacks.

Makes me so grateful to our volunteers.

An extra prayer for your daughter!

Hell, most humans are pretty useless from the age of 17 until about 25 anyway, so why not get 'em all marching in a straight line with rifles? Give 'em something to do so they won't have so much time to sit around, whine, and irritate the rest of us by dressing up in silly winged costumes and protesting our involvment in a country most of them can't even find on a map.

That, or we could actually try to retain quality teachers in public schools so that the nation's moron quotient will be significantly reduced thereby eliminating the need for a draft . . .

It is MOST DEFINITELY a part of the Plan, and it is working. It is NOT aimed at firing up the liberal base, it is aimed at scaring soccer moms who don't want their preteen and teenage sons and daughters to be drafted! This is being actively spread in OHIO - I have a friend who says the suburban moms there are fired up in support of Kerry, SOLELY because they are getting these emails and seeing stuff on womens' websites saying that Bush is going to sign the order to reinstate the draft immediately after the election!

This is very similar to the kind of agitprop the Gore campaign was putting out in the inner cities saying that Bush was going to repeal the civil rights laws, flyers with the fak pictures of Bush holding a Confederate flag, etc. It sucks that people are so gullible and that liberals are so underhanded as to take advantage of it with these underground rumor campaigns. But they have proven that it works.

Really. The only reason the left introduced the bills to reinstate the draft, and encourages the rumours of a draft in the off, is to stir up opposition to the War on Terror. They remember how the draft was the major spur to opposition to the Vietnam War -- boomers who were too precious in their own eyes and their parents' eyes to defend their country or fight for liberty went out and voted against the war in droves.

And now these same Leftists are spewing rumors that the draft is coming back so they can put GWB in a bad light.

And the Leftist media is, naturally, gobbling it up like manna from heaven.

I heard Ronald Wilson Reagan say in a campaign speech in 1980 in Canton, Ohio (right before the convention) that he believed the Selective Service System should be abolished and the name-collecting should end.

In order to combat the Rangels of the world, Dubya should immediately propose to abolish the Selective Service System, purge the names, and stop requiring registration.

The justification at the time the name-collection began was that this would save several WEEKS of delay, should the draft ever be needed. These WEEKS, it was chaged, would be critical for our military.

That's clearly NOT the case now. It's a waste of time and utterly useless. Nobody can construct a scenario where we need to deploy mass armies in a very short period of time -- not in today's world. Let's end this nonsense -- If Dubya proposed this and it came to a vote in the Congress, that would put the 'Rats in a terrible position!! Kerry might even lose it and claim we might need a draft!! How funny would THAT be?

I expect a draft if Frenchketchup is elected. He will pull back from this war and from domestic security and there will be a series of 911s until he responds. Then it will be from a severely diminished position. After a major military defeat or two there will be a spasm of desperation measures that will include a major draft that will be SNAFU from the outset because it will be required to put 50% women in combat. All of this will lead maybe to nukes as everything seems to be failing.

They are filling all the spots on the local draft boards, because a lot of the people applied 20 years ago, and I am sure there was no effort on the Clintoon administration to keep the boards full.

I applied online and two people wrote back, one from the Navy and one from the Air Force. I filled out the paperwork about three months ago and haven't heard back.

I just didn't get how going out on the ocean would save him. Did he plan to LIVE out there? People should understand that with citizenship comes responsibilities and that one of them is to defend the nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Therefore, letting politics end at the waters' edge isn't just a good idea, it's the LAW. And treason includes giving aid and comfort to the nations' enemies, and that includes encouraging them to believe we'll give up if they just fight a little harder and a little longer.

The left is terrified of the military and we can't win no matter how we slice it. The draft used to be unfair because more "poor" kids than "rich" kids served. Now, supposedly, the military is the only option for "poor" kids, so they are serving in disproportionate numbers. Ignore, for the time being, that if we replace the "poor" kids with "rich" draftees, the "poor" kids will, theoretically, starve to death...

I am a firm believer in a draft properly done. That would be universal male at 17 or 18 with only medical exemptions and short term, six months, a year at absolute max and NO posting. The draft would not even be part of the military proper and would consist of only basic training and AIT and such. No one would be allowed to transfer straight to the military but would have to be a civilian for some minimum time, 1-6 months maybe, before enlisting in the regular services. That would eliminate fear of the unknown which drove much of the draft protest and would provide a huge pool of men with training who are used to the military idea who would provide all the volunteers needed at any time in any situation.

Ha Ha. I was born in 1959 too. The renewed registration started on July 1st and I was born a month too early. Most of my friends had to register. It was just another one of Carter's empty actions to try to convince the world that he would really act in the nations' interest as CinC if necessary. I think the rest of the world (read Soviet Union) saw through that little travesty easily enough. I could never figure out why Iran wanted him out, though. Pretty stupid, he was the best friend the Islamists ever had. Nobody ever accused them of being overly intelligent though, and I suppose all the ones that knew anything about the US were the ones who had been on the side of the Shah.
