This movie has had a MASSIVE publicity campaign, abetted by all the media. It was bound to open big, since it has rabid fans standing by for the opening.

Given this publicity it will probably continue to do reasonably well. The "word of mouth" will be from one fanatic to another, and therefore should be positive at least among these viewers. But the question is whether it will reach a wider audience and influence it. I doubt it.

Moore As Infantile Leftist and Neo-anarchist

He, Focault, epitomised what one of his critics called "infantile leftism", an egotistical school of politics which is concerned principally with making gestures; attempting to shock (think Michael Moore) and constantly criticising, but never proffering a coherent alternative. J G Merquior labelled Foucault a quintessential neo-anarchist.

Whereas traditional anarchists were inspired by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's mutualism and Kropotkin's co-operatives, and took pride in their embrace of science and humane Enlightenment values, Foucault owes more to the egotistical, destructive spirit of Mikhail Bakunin, whose anarchism luxuriated in its negativity and irrationality. Its beliefs consist entirely of what it opposes.

This legacy can be seen in today's "anti- capitalist" demonstrators, who are clear about what they seek to destroy, but rather vague as to what they want to create. ...............................................................http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1160760/posts?page=3#3

Ahh....since it had such dismal earnings in NYC when it opened, where do these numbers come from? Where else did it open? Falluja? Montreal? Of course it must have been big in Paris.

My brother saw it and he`s pretty much of a hippie lib. Said it was a POS that made America out to be the source of all evil in the entire world and some people were laughing at it. He said if America is so evil like MM says, why does everyone want to live here? I hope this destroys the career of that fat tub of puss. I mean when the NY Times, and other liberals give it bad reviews, then you know it must be an utter joke.

Oh wow! it took over the #1 spot from what movie? Dodgeball? Other so-so's to outright bombs to make the #1 spot this year: 50 First Dates, Hellboy, Mean Girls, Scooby-Doo 2, and Kill-Bill vol 2. For F911 to take #1 with all the media hype and with it competing with Dodgeball is not saying much. It will be a one weekend wonder and SPIDERMAN will kill F911.

I have two very liberal uncles who grew up in a conservative family. They were both turned off by bowling for columbine, they grew up around guns and didn't fall for that movie either.

One of those uncles has become very wealthy. He jokes that he already pays 90% of the taxes received by the city of Ann Arbor. The same uncle spent his military service in the national guards and is well aware that wealth or connections weren't what kept him from Vietnam. I doubt he's going to vote for Bush but he won't vote for Kerry either.

You could stand in front of the theatre with a sign which reads, "I am such a fan of Michael Moore, I couldn't hide it anymore".

While starting my car, I accidently heard some klunk on NPR--Surprise!--remarking that Michael Moore's movie is "counter-propaganda". To the knuckle-dragging Neanderthals of Lower Slobovia, this means that it's something other than propaganda. To everyone else, it means that it is propaganda with the implication "Well, they did it first!"

Here it is:

'Fahrenheit' turns on box office heat

Michael Moore's anti-Bush film breaks the single-day records at the two New York theaters. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Director Michael Moore's controversial documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" turned on the box office heat in its first day in theaters breaking single-day records at the two New York City theaters where it played. The movie, which aims a critical eye at President Bush and his prosecution of the war in Iraq, sold $49,000 worth of tickets at the Loew's Village 7 theater, beating the venue's single-day record of $43,435 held by 1997's "Men in Black," according to distributors Lions Gate Films and IFC Films. At the Lincoln Plaza theater, "Fahrenheit 9/11" took in more than $30,000 to top the $24,013 set by "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in 2000. A spokesman for Lions Gate Films said the company debuted the movie in the two theaters to help build good word-of-mouth -- friend telling friend -- publicity ahead of the wide debut Friday when it plays in 868 theaters in all 50 states....

At least it was low on the estimated end.

It isn't too much of a surprise......this appears to be a film in which people who want to see it will go to the theater as soon as they can.

It should have a quick drop-off period I think, starting about mid-week.
