Nebraska therapist loses license after allegedly firing a handgun at a memo that angered him

The Associated Press OMAHA, Neb. — The Nebraska Health and Human Services system has revoked the license of a North Platte therapist accused of firing a handgun at a memo that angered him.

Robert Powers, a mental health practitioner and professional counselor, got upset when he received a memo last summer saying only the manager of his office would have the key to certain supply drawers, according to state documents.

Powers took the memo and shot it several times with a .22-caliber handgun before returning it to the office, the document says.

Two days later, he reportedly called the office secretary and said he was too angry to return to work because he "might shoot somebody."

The comment prompted several co-workers to seek protection orders against him.

The state revoked Powers' license to practice as a counselor or therapist on the grounds of unprofessional conduct.

Perhaps it's unfair to generalize on this, but a disproportionate number of folks I've met in the mental health field (psychiatrists, psychologists, etc.) seem to have plenty of their own "issues." I've sometimes wondered if they were drawn into their profession in hope that they could remedy their own problems.

The L.P. will issue a press release criticizing the fact that therapists and doctors have to be licensed by the State, and for the State having his license revoked which he shouldn't have had to procure in the first place. Furthermore, they will condemn the infringement of his 2nd Amendment right to act irresponsibly with a firearm, and for exercising his 1st Amendment right to issue threats of murder.

And you got a problem with any of that?

We once were plagued by unscrupulous "oil sharks" who would send Texas landowners "sight drafts" (checks) for tempting sums. If the recipient cashed the "sight draft", it was tantamount to signing over the mineral rights to your land.

Quite a few older folks on limited incomes did cash their "windfall checks" -- and lost the mineral (and surface) rights their their property.

I threw away the first few drafts. Then, I took the latest one to the range and carefully wrote " NO! " on it in bullet holes -- and mailed it back. I never heard from that 'oil shark' company again... '-}
