Red-Light Camera Busts Cheating Wife

HAWTHORNE, Calif. -- A red light camera in Southern California caught one woman in the act -- of cheating.

Hawthorne Officer Mark Escalante said a local resident is challenging his $341 red-light violation ticket.

The ticket was mailed to the registered owner of the car. But the car owner says the camera's automatic videotape shows he wasn't driving -- it was his wife's lover behind the wheel. The jilted husband is getting a divorce.

But the new red-light traffic cameras snagged more than 1,400 motorists last month in Hawthorne, leading to a slew of complaints.

There's been a threefold increase in tickets since the red-light camera were installed this spring. Cameras snapped pictures that resulted in 1,414 tickets issued in June.

Some motorists outraged over getting the tickets storm into the police station to dispute the violations, not knowing the photos come accompanied by videotape.

1414 tickets at $342 per ticket......a whopping $482,174 in one month, nearly $6 million per year! A great profit center for the city. How can I get into the ticket business?

I heard a story--maybe in the 1960s--that a man went to see an American daytime live TV broadcast, and the camera panned him in the audience with "another woman"...that resulted in his wife seeing it and thereupon suing for divorce, successfully.

I think it was from that point on that when you go to a TV show, live or taped, they ask you to sign a release or otherwise agree that your image can be broadcast, without legal reprecussions to them later.

...and the point really is, what persons living in any city in these United States, would allow city government the license to install any of these devices in their town. You have just solved the local police PR problem at great personal expense, and relieved the police to catch others breaking traffic rules. Sort of like killing two sturds with one bone. If the populace fails to keep in check the numbers, policy, and direction of its law enforcement agencies, they have only themselves to blame. Or to put it another way, this is a classic definition of "easy money", and you foot the bill for the expensive camera system to begin with.

What's most outrageous is that he's driving the guy's car!

I think that these cameras raise due process questions.

There is no police officer there to give you the ticket, and no way to prove that the light actually was red when you went through it. Moreover, if you run a red light in a buddy's car you get the ticket, but under this scenario a ticket gets sent to the registered owner's legal address a few days later, and he is responsible for the ticket.

It's off topic, but do you know that those red-light cameras are tested withstand gunfire? I understand they can absorb a .308 bullet or a 12 guage slug and keep on ticking. I guess this story shows us why!;)

Why is this in the Activism/Chapters topic?

There wasn't a Freeper chapter member involved in this, was there? ;-)

I'm angry. I'm very angry, Ralph. You know, you can ball my wife if she wants you to. You can lounge around here on her sofa, in her ex-husband's dead-tech, post-modernistic bullsh-t house if you want to. But you do not get to drive my f-ing automobile!

(Paraphrased from the movie "Heat" with Robert Di Niro)

Can't you just see the argument?

"And you let him drive my car! Have you no shame, no shame at all?"

England had red-light cameras, and bagged them very, very soon after Members Of Parliament were caught on film by them, with unknown women with them, and after the tickets and photos were sent to the MOP's wives at home. Getting caught in an affair is funny ... until a legislator does it. And then the law is changed.
