Terrorists Don't Often Fit Stereotype, Expert Says
The Knight Ridder Washington Bureau ^ | July 1, 2004 | Robert S. Boyd

Most Americans have a false idea of the shadowy, worldwide terrorist network led by al-Qaida, according to a former CIA operative who collected the life histories of almost 400 members of the deadly movement.

The stereotype that these terrorists are poor, desperate, single young men from Third World countries, vulnerable to brainwashing, is wrong, Dr. Marc Sageman told an international terrorism conference in Washington this week.

Most Arab terrorists he studied were well-educated, married men from middle- or upper-class families, in their mid-20s and psychologically stable, said Sageman, a psychiatrist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Many of them knew several languages and traveled widely.

But when they settled in foreign countries, they became lonely, homesick and embittered, he said. They felt humiliated by the weakness and backwardness of their homelands. They formed tight cliques with fellow Arabs and drifted into mosques more for companionship than for religion. Radical preachers convinced them it was their duty to drive Americans from Muslim holy lands, killing as many as possible.

I'm still not convinced that terrorists are 80 year old great grandmothers from Peoria.

I saw part of a show on PBS (gag) last night about Palestinian terrorists. It was amazing to me that a human mind could really function that way. Some of them were euphoric about the idea of dying for the cause, and of course there was all that nonsense about the seventy-two virgins waiting for you in paradise. I wonder what it's like to carry out one of those suicide missions and wake up to, not seventy-two virgins, but Satan himself?

From what I have been able to gather, not all terrorists are alike......some are named Mohammed and others are named Abdul.

"terrorists are 80 year old great grandmothers from Peoria."

What? You mean terrorists aren't warm peace loving puppies, who ordinarily wouldn't hurt a fly but have been driven to distruction by the cruel imperialist dictates of America which is controlled by the Jews? /SARCASM OFF

From watching the airport screeners I thought little kids carrying miniature "action-figure" guns, arthritic old ladies and 80-year old Medal of Honor bearers constituted terrorist threats. PBS must be wrong (sarc).

Heh! Still, there are plenty of blue-eyed Muslim terrorists in the Balkans and the Caucasus. Dress one up the way you dress. Now spot the terrorist. See?

Maybe this explains the bumper sticker I saw today:

Bombs can kill terrorists, but only love can stop terrorism.

Doesn't that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside?

Admittedly, Caipirabob's example
is far more frightening.

Than you would have loved the 'SNL' sketch about two Turkish talk show hosts who were stuck in a time warp.

It was like Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd's "Wild and crazzzy guys" bit, except that instead of Eastern European swingers, they were Turkish.

Horation Sanz killed in that skit!

Heh, heh, heh.

Believe me, it was a playful ribbing.

I'll try to post a simulacrum of that sketch-or, my own interpretation of it-in the coming days.

If I can't find an actual transcript of the episode itself, that is.

Keep your eyes peeled!

According to the lamestream media and liberals, terrorism is caused by 'root causes' of poverty, hunger, poor housing, racism, etc. When they start talking about'root causes',you will hear the'blame America first'talking points from the utopians and elites. They want you to believe it our fault for them being terrorist. It is not our fault, terrorist are just plain evil people that hate America.

"According to the lamestream media and liberals, terrorism is caused by 'root causes' of poverty, hunger, poor housing, racism, etc."

What are the root causes of poverty, hunger, poor housing, racism, etc? According to the lamestream media, that would be the USA.

According to my observations, however, that would be the broken culture and the broken governments found in countries that breed terrorists.

I know, I know..you can't JUDGE another culture. It's not FAIR. Every culture (except US culture) has it's GOOD points, and we need to EMPHASIZE those so OTHERS don't FEEL BAD.

all that nonsense about the seventy-two virgins waiting for you in paradise.

I saw the PBS show too. The sleazy suiciders talked about 70, not 72 virgins. Apparently they're running out of virgins in Allah's heaven.

So basically after they commit suicide they get to become celestial Hugh Hefners. I guess that's a genius way to sell a religion to some losers.
