I'm about to find out all about Tomah and Sparta, WI. Two small towns right outside the gate of Fort McCoy, where I'm currently stationed.

Alpharetta, GA... My beloved daughter's family residence.

Small town in northern Georgia --- about an hour north of Atlanta...

The entire downtown is closed off -- the parade is a SERIOUS event with all sorts of units, schools, clubs, businesses, bands and military represented --- and the parade goes on for quite a LONG TIME! Not a mickey mouse event...

There is a stage and podium at City Hall, where local decorated vets are seated in honored positions, and some are invited to speak...

I, a grizzled old grunt, will admit to tears flowing at the sound of children's voices singing the many patriotic songs and holding their little hands over their hearts...
It WILL bring you to tears of joy and sadness mixed together...

What was most interesting and sad....is that one could pick out the many Vietnam vets present -- by their age, quiet demeanor and the sadness in their eyes as they seem to favor standing at the outside edges of the crowded sidewalk....

Apparently, some STILL haven't been welcomed home..

A quiet whisper, nod and smile would always bring a nod of acknowledgment....

Bristol, R.I.
Great parade, *convivial* atmosphere!!

I don't know that I've seen the July 4th parade there since 1976, but I remember it was quite something. And it's the only place I know of where roads ised for the parade have a permanent red, white, and blue centerline.

We do it up big in Jasper, TX. Something for everybody and it's around a pond and Sandy Creek.

The festivities will begin around 4:00 pm with entertainment by “Solar Systems”, playing blues, zydeco, and mixed tunes; “New Day”, a quartet from Nacogdoches that will perform patriotic and gospel music.

... a B-52 bomber from the second bomb wing at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport will perform a low altitude fly-by at 7:30 that evening.

The infamous dunking booth will once again host local celebrities, politicians, and friends as they help to raise to money for next year’s celebration.

Tamollie’s restaurant will sponsor their watermelon contest; “Just Archery” will be on hand to demonstrate bow hunting skills and allow children to shoot at targets.

... a moonwalk for the kids to jump in and the East Texas Art League will offer face painting. There will also be back drops for fun photos, puppet shows, gigantic slide and other activities.

The Harvest Way Church here in Jasper will also provide a puppet show and clowns for the day event and there will be plenty of food such as sausage, pizza, barbecue, hot dogs and roasted corn cooked and served by the many different charities and service groups in the area.

The fireworks show will be held at 9:00 pm and this year’s presentation promises to be more spectacular than the previous years, electronically choreographed to music.

Wakefield, Massachusetts puts on a great program, especially for the kids, and has a parade that they claim is second only to Bristol, RI, in the Northeast. See Town ready for a star-spangled Fourth of July celebration.

Well, the best small-town celebration I ever experienced was with Becky and Laurie at the shores of Pattagansett Lake in Flanders, Conn., on hazy and humid Fourth of July. Lots of fireworks, many displays that caused the assembled crowd to go "ooh" and "ahh," and skinnydipping. :) No crowds, either. Great parking. Wonderful fireflies. Outstanding sunrise.

"What is a PATRIOT?"
PATRIOTS are not "Revolutionaries" trying to overthrow the government of the United States.

PATRIOTS are "Counter-Revolutionaries" trying to prevent the government of the United States from overthrowing the Constitution of the United States. - Unknown Author
