July 6, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE

John Kerry has chosen Rep. Richard Gephardt, the veteran congressman from Missouri, to be his running mate, The Post has learned.

Gephardt, 63, a 28-year veteran of the House of Representatives, could be named by the presumptive Democratic nominee as the party's vice-presidential candidate as soon as today.

The Massachusetts senator was set to announce the winner of the veep-stakes at a rally this morning in Pittsburgh, according to several reports last night.

With the July 26 Democratic convention in Boston looming, Kerry is looking for some advantage in the polls, and is hoping his choice of running mate will be the answer.

I've just seen this happen too many times before to buy it.

Besides, I know my life is destined to be ruined by John Edwards being the VP pick..........LOL.

Perhaps, though I have my doubts. I have friend in Missouri who tell me that Gephardt is really only well liked in the urban areas, and in and around his district. It might make the race closer there, but not a lock of Kerry by any means.
But, and this is the important consideration, by NOT picking Edwards, assuming this story is true, Kerry has just written off the entire South. And THAT'S great news, any way you look at it. Again, assuming the Post has indeed "scooped" the story and this is true.

I'm on my laptop tonight. I'm in between moves, so my desktop with all my photoshop is in the garage. I'm sure somebody will have this quite shortly. :)

If Hillary runs, she wins.

I know that's conventional wisdom, but I just don't see it. I think she's despised by a lot of people. She'd definitely get the right to the polls. Then, you have to look at the fact that there will be certain Democrat men who won't vote for a woman. And, there'll be certain Democrats who also don't like her. She's not very likeable at all, though I admit that's looking through the prism of my own bias.

Possible, I guess. Wonder how she'd do it?

Probably by waddling up to Gephardt with his FBI file in her fat hands, "Dick, you seen this??"

She could pin it on the Secret Service. "They tried to whack him earlier, remember?"
