Becker County investigator John Sieling says the 29-year-old mother, from Perham, handed the bucket with a child in it to a stranger early Sunday morning and then walked away. Sieling says authorities were called to the festival grounds Sunday morning at three. A woman had been watching the baby for about three hours since the mother had given her the pail. Sieling says county chaplains found the mother a few hours later and told her authorities had her child. The case will be turned over to the Otter Tail County Attorney's office for a review of possible charges. The baby remains with child services.
Becker County authorities are investigating a report that the mother of an 11-month-old child was carrying her son around in a five-gallon bucket when she handed him over to a stranger at a music festival near Detroit Lakes Saturday night.
The mosquito-bitten child was wearing a diaper and covered by a towel when his mother, a 29-year-old from Perham, Minn., gave him to a concerned woman who approached her at the 10,000 Lakes Festival at the Soo Pass Ranch, Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon said.
The woman who was given the child contacted event staff and the boy's mother was located and interviewed several hours later, Gordon said.
Gordon declined to identify either of the women, stating the matter was under investigation. The Becker County Attorney's Office will determine whether charges are filed, Gordon said.
It is also possible civil action will be taken in either Becker County or Otter Tail County regarding the future of the child, said Gordon, who added the child was in "good shape."
I'm sure I heard that somewhere.
God Bless this baby and the lady who chose to help!
Its not a baby, its a choice.
We must regulate Buckets!!! How can we allow just anyone to have a bucket after this insanity??? I am calling for a 5 day waiting period and background checks before the sale of buckets to anyone.
Many drown in bathtubs when left unattended. Many more than have ever been shot.
Actually, one should be careful with 5-gallon buckets with toddlers around. The baby can go head-first into the bucket, and they can't get out. I would not have believed it if I had not seen my toddler go into a bucket half full of sand. One minute she was pulling herself up, and the next all I could see was shoes! I pulled her up by her feet, and we had a good laugh...
Yeah, but the drown in the bucket, just like they are more likelly to drown in a toilet then shoot themselves, unless you're keeping a hand gun beside the toilet...
Charges? She should get a medal for not killing him, right after she signs the papers to terminate her parental rights.
The inevitable result of dehumanization is babies in buckets. It is either life or like a disposable diaper. I, of course, think its life but babies in bukets don't surprise me, it is the inevitable result of bad government policy.
