Sen. John Kerry made the phone call to Sen. John Edwards late Monday night, after sharing the news of his decision with his wife, Terry Kerry, his vice presidential vetter, Jim Johnson, and campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill. Johnson then facilitated the phone calls to everyone else involved.
Surprisingly, Kerry was adamant about making the announcement without Edwards being present, an oddity in modern politics, even for a man such as Kerry obsessed with public image. The Kerry campaign spun Edwards' absence from the Tuesday morning announcement by first claiming that it was no big deal (Edwards did a phoner with reporters immediately after the announcement), and then, when that didn't fly, by claiming that the announcement was supposed to be on Wednesday, but fear of leaks pushed the announcement up.
In the end, though, say Kerry insiders, they believe it had everything to do with keeping Edwards in his place.
"This selection was not entirely the senator's to make," says a former Kerry adviser. "Despite everything that has been said about a one-man decision, he was getting lots of pressure from outsiders to get Edwards on the ticket. And let's be honest, everyone has known from day one that Edwards was campaigning for this slot throughout the primary season. Kerry knows this is a good pick, but there is unease there that he has picked a man who will overshadow him as a personality and as a speaker. I am not surprised that he left Edwards in Washington and kept the spotlight on himself. That is so John Kerry."
In reality, though, Kerry's choosing Edwards was not the safest pick he could have made. In the late days of the selection process, Kerry was shown private polling done for the campaign that showed that Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack might have been the more interesting pick. "Vilsack's numbers showed slightly higher 'satisfactory' levels among Democrats and independents than Edwards," says a Kerry campaign staffer. "Edwards was a safer pick, but Vilsack might have presented Kerry with a better risk/rewards return. Now we'll never know."
Edwards had offered to doubletime it to Pittsburgh for the Tuesday morning event, but Kerry insisted that Edwards not make the effort, instead telling him to report for duty for a private dinner with their spouses on Tuesday evening.
Some Republicans in the Senate are pleased with the Edwards pick, not because they think the presidential race will be any easier, but because Democrats will now find themselves one more vote short on critical issues.
"Edwards is either going to abandon his colleagues in the Senate, or have to be on a very short leash and ready to fly back for votes on a moment's notice," says a Republican staffer on the Rules Committee. "Either way, his presence on the ticket and lack of presence on the Senate floor presents us with some interesting opportunities."
SHEESH! Talk about an utter lack of self-confidence! Kerry is so insecure that he wouldn't even meet publicly with Edwards yesterday because he was scared of being upstaged!
In the end, though, say Kerry insiders, they believe it had everything to do with keeping Edwards in his place.
Stay in your place, Boy!
This helped the republican and swing voter by forcing the entire attention to be on Kerry yesterday. Many voters got a chance to really take a look at Kerry for the first time and he was so dreary and gloomy on what should have been an exciting day that I believe the die was cast.

June 6, 2004 = U.S. Sen. John Edwards at Bilderberg
http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040606-103603-4126r.htm
Our local DJ's here in Charlotte, said it had to do with the Democrats wanting Kerry to get all the Glory yesterday, Then Edwards getting all the Glory today, then THE MEETING of the TWO getting all the Glory, so the Love fest could linger and continue all week long....
Kerry can't even choose his own candidate. He relies on others. ("Oh... the pain, the pain...")
And then he throws a snit and refuses to allow edwards to be present when the announcement is made?
This guy is seeing a pack of therapists.
Kerry probably already has buyer's remorse.
Kerry is the #1 liberal in the Senate.
Edwards is the #4 liberal in the Senate.
This ticket is so liberal that they can't run on their Senate records. Kerry still has his 4 months in Viet Nam; Edwards has, uh.....[ambulance chasing].
You are right. One word explains this: Bilderberg.
Standing beside one, Kerry would make a fence post appear charismatic.
Kerry's announcement was typical Kerry -- dry, dull, rambling, boring, uninspiring.
" And let's be honest, everyone has known from day one that Edwards was campaigning for this slot throughout the primary season. More shades of the strained relationship that was (is) between former Pres. Bill Clinton and then VP Al Gore. Do democrats ever get along with anyone? They continue to prove how self destructive they are for the sake of self serving purposes. Now that's childish.
There are so many flags going up in my mind with regard to personality disorders on the part of sKerry: obsessiveness with his personal appearance (Botox) and smell (he is always smelling his fingers or putting them under his nose), those incredibly awkward physical clinches with TahRayZa contrasting with those icky up-close encounters with Edwards and Gephardt, taking his daughter jockstrap shopping, his temper erupting over his own sport "performances", his pathetic insistence on talking about his glory days from over 30 years ago instead of relevant stuff, his inability to have the courage to make a decision and stick to it (just because it is the right thing to do), his serial marriage career ("Marriage for fun and profit!"), and now, his (more legitimate) fear of being upstaged by a guy that gave the same nauseating stump speech 3 gazillion times during the primaries. Well, the Democrats have their anti-Bush, and he's just as clueless and unpresidential as you would expect, LOL!
Never trust a man with 2 first names.
A pack of therapists??? Is that like a murder of crows??? ;-)
Well, this augurs well for the presidential debates, doesn't it? If you ask me, Kerry is working himself into a dither over those already. The contrast between the President's personality and looks and Kerry's will be so darn obvious that undecideds and weakly committed democrats will desert in droves.
"There are so many flags going up in my mind with regard to personality disorders on the part of sKerry: obsessiveness with his personal appearance (Botox) and smell (he is always smelling his fingers or putting them under his nose), ......... taking his daughter jockstrap shopping"
"jockstrap shopping" ?? Huh, is this a joke? This is news to me. What, where and why did this occur? (ewww X 10)
Classy guy, huh?
The media just couldn't protect kerry from himself yesterday.
Something unhealthy of the relationship between these fathers and their daughters.
"This honest to God happened. He went shopping in a sporting goods store during the primaries with his daughter in tow, and in her presence and that of a gaggle of reporters bought a jock strap.
Classy guy, huh?"
Wow Kerry suffers from serious machismo egotism. Was he hoping a reporter would inquire about his jock strap size? More shades of meglomaniac Clinton when he was in Brazil shopping for bikinis. We know darn well the bikini wasn't for sHillary and frankly it's too odd for a father to buy a bikini for his daughter, especially if that father is a Presidential raping lech... blech
WE WILL FLUSH THE JOHNS! ! ! ! !
I feel like Dave Barry when I say: I am NOT making this up! :) He made a big deal (pun intended) of taking his daughter along with him when he went shopping for jockstraps just prior to his ski vacation (when he was SO exhausted from all his campaigning and not showing up for work) earlier this year. There were several articles about it, discussed here on FR, but I am sorry that I cannot point you to the dates or titles. Someone more accomplished with the search function (or with a better memory) may have to do that, LOL! As to the "why", I think it is because Dems have such a fixation on proving themselves as "sexy" (I know, ewwww times 12!) that they don't understand how bizarre they are. Al Gore's airbrushed "package" on the cover of the Rolling Stone, x42's obsession with camera angles and cigars to show him in a dominant sexual position, and Kerry's revealing little (pun intended) forays into jockstrap shopping with a female not his wife. Blech. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.
And arrogant...
JFK may do the impossible and make "W" look like a good orator...
Its obvious Bush makes up his own mind after weighing the options and Kerry will be swayed from doing what he thinks is right.
The king of Marxist dorks and a plague of locust lawyers, eating out the sustenance of America. What a ticket.
If John Kerry , can not make a decision on who to chose as his VP, then how can we trust John Kerry to make choices of importance concerning National Security?
JOHN KERRY ON JOHN EDWARDS' EXPERIENCE: In the Senate four years - and that is the full extent of public life - no international experience, no military experience, you can imagine what the advertising is going to be next year, Mr. Kerry said. With a grin, he added: When I came back from Vietnam in 1969 I dont know if John Edwards was out of diapers then. Well, Im sure he was out of diapers. (Adam Nagourney and Jim Rutenberg, With Hopes Up And Elbows Out, Democrats Give Iowa Their All, The New York Times, 1/19/04)
" If John Kerry , can not make a decision on who to chose as his VP, then how can we trust John Kerry to make choices of importance concerning National Security? "
Kerry won't make choices or decisions, he'll just reach for the phone and speed dial the UN for guidance. ick-ee
Actually it was even FUNNIER than what you mentioned. Kerry LOUDLY asked for an EXTRA-LARGE jockstrap. (Or did he ask for the John Holmes brand?)
I almost feel sad for her: the rich older woman preyed upon by a serial gigolo and is being publicly humiliated by the public exposure of his motives. This is no love match (not if you look at the photos of them together, which are rare these days). I would feel sorry for her except that she seems to have dropped off the edge of reality herself lately.
JOHN KERRY TO SENIOR AIDE DAVID WADE: "Edwards says he's the only one who can win states in the South ... He can't win his own state." (Adam Nagourney, For Kerry And Edwards, Sharp Exchanges Reflect A Crucial Day Of Voting, The New York Times, 2/3/04)
As musch as I can't stand Kerry, this is a BS story. Kerry did it two get 2 nes cycles out of the announcement -- 1 with the announcement and 1 with his first appearance with Edwards. A shrewd, albeit transparent, political move.
I guess that is how he got the name "SCARY KERRY"
Nutty Heinz and Ketchup Boy will BOTH be appearing on Larry King tomorrow. It should be FUN to watch!
The two families are gracing us with their presence live in the garden. Are they trying for a new Camelot?
Helen Keller
Kerry has a serious lack of judgement. He had to ask his staff how he should behave when he went to the Reagan Library to pay his respects. He asked if he should salute, bow his head, talk to the people in line or what.
If the man doesn't know how to behave in that situation he certainly doesn't have the capacity to lead the most powerful nation in the world.
Has anyone noticed the difference in Kerry's voice from the 70's to now? He's had some instruction in getting rid of that Mass accent.
And if you average the two, you get TEDDY! HAH!
Yep, play the bounce.
Absolutely Miss M! I've been saying this for months...the first time those two (GWB and JF'n-K) get on stage together, it will be the turning point of the race. Not just for women, but men will also see the difference and find it hard to vote for the pompous, arrogant, self-impressed, snobby Yankee wind bag!
Sounds vaguely like a form of suicide. (Hopefully political.)

Maybe this guy?
On last night's news I saw a clip of Kerry's Pittsburgh speech, and he made some big, meaningful statement designed to elicit cheers. Teresa was standing to his right, behind him, and she made a very obvious grimace, as if thinking, "What an idiot." Then, it appeared to me, she may have realized she was supposed to try to look supportive of her beloved, so her facial expression changed dramatically, to something softer and thoughtful. It was hilarious.
Helen Keller?
Rats! Beat me!
.....can we say "Hillary" who makes the decisions...:)
