Kerry to Reach Out to 'People on the Right'

ALBUQUERQUE — Counting on his liberal base to stick by him, Sen. John F. Kerry plans to aggressively court more conservative voters with a message that emphasizes traditional values of service, faith and family.

Following his pick last week of a running mate with potential appeal to rural communities, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee said he was not content to target the narrow band of swing voters that the two parties were expected to fight over in roughly 20 swing states.

"I'm going to talk to people on the right," Kerry told The Times on Friday during a joint interview with his vice presidential pick, Sen. John Edwards. "I want to talk to conservatives."

As for rank-and-file party members, Kerry said his record of strong support for environmental protection, gun control and abortion rights — all core Democratic issues — "speaks for itself about my priorities in policy terms."

Indeed, Kerry seemed unconcerned about antagonizing his liberal supporters.

"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.

The Massachusetts senator has already begun his effort to broaden his political reach. During a recent swing through the Midwest, where he tramped around farms and toted a shotgun on a trap-shooting range, Kerry said that he represented "conservative values," and emphasized his personal opposition to abortion.

Yeah, this will work. Unfortunately for him, most of the folks on the right are there because they have half a brain. They don't vote on who has the best hair, looks the coolest, or can quip the best touchy feely lines. They won't fall for a stupid last minute pack of lies like this. Then again, let him waste his time.

And once I've gotten power, I (and Dianne Feinstein) will decide what we hunters and gun owners need as legitimate weaponry. Your handguns... Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them in.

He's going to reach out to conservatives? With what? A scumbag-trial-lawyer-running mate? A totally business-hostile platform? Unlimited abortion? Kissing Frog butt?

Kerry's such a coward, who knows where he'll stand tomorrow.

"Los Angeles City Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa said he had heard no complaints from liberal constituency groups about the tenor of Kerry's campaign.

"I represent that wing," said Villaraigosa, a national co-chairman of Kerry's campaign. "People recognize that our success in November hinges on our ability to reach out to a broad cross-section of America."

Wolf in sheep's clothing. Kerry can pretend to embrace life begins at conception, but the record he brings speaks for itself. He can pretend to be conservative, but his record is ultraliberal.

Go court your base, Kerry. Clinton fooled the electorate once, no more...

With one foot in Hell and the other teetering on the edge of the abyss, I think we do know where he'll stand tomorrow, his tomorrow. Trouble with cinos like ol' Feckless is, they want to take as many with them as they can, as if it would improve their destination.

"But he said he thought Edwards would be a particular asset in rural areas."

btw, as a Southerner who has Carolina and West Virginia relatives, where on earth did Edwards get the phoney/balony, William Faulkner, cracker accent from?

I'll bet he honed that piece of linguistic cornpone to appeal to juries.

None of us sound like that.

Yaaaaawn has never voted against gun laws or late term abortion. He would gladly eliminate the 2nd amendment and was one of 15 Senators to vote against the Late Term Abortion Ban. These are more Kerry lies!

Dear Senator Kerry,

I will vote for you on one condition: you will actively support life and do everything in your power to protect the lives of unborn children including, but not limited to keeping partial birth abortion illegal.

What? I didn't think so.

Buh-bye.

People, what this means is his internal polling says there are more Conservative likely voters than liberal. He can't win without something other than his base and his base will tolerate anything at all from him.

If we are to win, we have to do the same. Bush will have to compete in the middle. If we make 3rd party noises, Kerry will take the middle and we'll have the most liberal senator in the Congress as president.

So all you guys (about 8% as polls have it) who are GOP and not supporting Bush because he's not conservative enough -- make your choice. Kerry's move to the middle and right has what value of credibility? Right, zero. You will have 5 additional staunchly pro Choice Justices replacing the retirees if Kerry is elected. With Bush, far fewer.

Make your choice. Your Constitution Party candidate will decide no, repeat, no judges. With Bush you'll get more judges who are more preferable than with Kerry.

Make your choice. Don't condemn your neighbors to life under liberals.

Senator, unless you are willing to apologize for the lies you told about your fellow Vietnam veterans, unless you are willing to fully explain your fondness for big taxes, big government and small defense, and unless you are willing to publicly condemn the dispicable comments of your fellow liberals Al Gore, Howard Dean, Michael Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, then don't waste your breath trying to "talk to" us conservatives. You have nothing to say that would be of interest to us.

In French Kerry Persona:

I believe all life is sacred. I am devout Catholic. I read the Bible and pray everyday. Abortion will exist no matter what the law says. The only way to end abortion is ensure that regular folks have access to good jobs, good wages, good health care, and first rate public education. All these rights disappeared when Bush denied African-Americans the right to vote in 2000. Elect me, all will be fine. I give you my word as a Catholic who takes the Vatican's teachings seriously. BTW, I served in 'Nam too.

I refuse to believe that Effen and his handlers are so stupid as to think that posing with a gun and saying he's personally against abortion (but in favor of partial birth abortion) is going to woo conservatives away from George Bush.

So, why do this? Maybe to goad the President's campaign into spending their resources on maintaining the (already reasonably secured) conservative vote, rather than in courting the swing voters and undecideds who really do determine the election outcome.

"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.

You aren't a hunter. Hunters don't craw on their belly with a 12 gauge. You stand when you are hunting most birds. You call turkeys in with box calls, and if you crawl for deer(slugs), they will use their very good hearing and run off faster than you can say Jack Robinson.

And hunters don't push to ban the .30-30.

At least he's absolutely right about that. There's no way he can alienate his supporters. Their hatred for Bush is so irrational that Effen could personally go to Abu Ghraib and put panties on the heads of detainees and nobody on the left would even blink.
