WASHINGTON (AP) - Leaders of the NAACP, through their "hostile rhetoric," have shown no interest in working with President Bush, the White House said Thursday. The president skipped speaking to the group, but will address the annual meeting of another civil rights organization next week.
Bush will speak at the Urban League on July 23 during its convention in Detroit. Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry also has been invited to speak to the league.
"The president welcomes differing views - constructive dialogue about differences. Ways we can work together on shared priorities is an important part of our national discourse. But the current (NAACP) leadership, through their repeated partisan comments and hostile rhetoric, have shown that they are not interested in a constructive dialogue," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.
Bush declined to speak to the NAACP during its convention in Philadelphia this week, drawing criticism from NAACP leaders. Although he spoke to the group when he was running for president, Bush has not attended its convention as president, the first since the 1930s to decline to speak to the group.
The White House cited a scheduling conflict when it turned down the NAACP invitation. Bush later said his relationship with NAACP leaders was "nonexistent" and told reporters, "You've heard the rhetoric and the names they've called me."
On Monday, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume described Bush's black supporters as "ventriloquists' dummies" and said the president's decision not to speak at the convention was an insult. The same day, NAACP chairman Julian Bond urged members to oust Bush and condemned the administration's policies on education, the economy and the war in Iraq.
Kerry was scheduled to speak to the NAACP on Thursday, the final day of its convention.
Bush spoke to an Urban League conference in July 2003, telling the mostly black audience that his economic policies were a path to "greater opportunity and hope" for black Americans. When he addressed the group's national convention in Washington in August 2001 he asked members to support his education initiatives.
Marine Bump!
Good for him!
Actually I'm glad he is doing this because it is another slap in the face to the NAACP!
How much does it cost for Bush to take a trip to the Pentagon? Etc...etc..etc..
I was wondering how long it would take for Bush to be accused of pandering on this thread. I was even surprised that it was the second comment.
And now President Bush will know what lies Kerry told the NAACP today...good move.
I agree - Smart move on Bush's part.
Meanwhile, he will go to the Urban League and speak, and at many other black organizations, I would think.
Life is good!
Semper Fi! God bless the President and God bless the Marines!
When President Bush is re-elected, it will be eight long years for the NAACP without a visit from a President. The tradition of automatically going to address them will be broken. Its leaders know they are spiralling toward irrelevance, their angry rhetoric is their death rattle.
I'm proud of Dubyuh for standing his ground on this one. Its about time a white politician shows the backbone to stand up to those race-baiting money-grubbing demagogues at the NAACP. They need to be isolated from the black community.
You don't change people's minds by preaching to the choir. He addressed the Urban League last year after he rejected the ultra left wing NAACP. His speech last year was to the point and relavent. I expect him to be equally relavent this year.
Who knows, maybe he will inspire some people. He sure as heck wouldn't if he didn't try.
Agreed.
When President Bush is re-elected, the Democrat Party (those that, though are misguided, or deluded, but of some sanity) will have to come to grips with the fact that they, like the NAACP, are becoming irrelelevant.
What with the black caucus, overt communitsts, socialists, and mental defectives like Ted Kennedy etal, the Republicans may be the only Party with any viability.
One look at the 9 Democrat presidential aspirants, and the fact that they got any acknowledgement at all, would give one, with any intelligence, reason to pause.
Kucinich? A complete idiot!
Graham? A do nothing ex-govenor, present two term Senator.
Sharpton? A race baiting criminal.
The list, as you know, goes on.
He's doing exactly what I wanted and expected him to do. I posted yesterday that he should reach out to other black groups. This effectively puts the exclamation point on his "no" answer to the NAACP and hopefully will open the eyes of their members. God Bless GWB!
I would offer a humble suggestion that he refer to the audience as "AMERICANS of African descent".
If you're going to insult people, learn how to spell. Heaven forbid President Bush talk to Black people, huh?
There are a lot of stand up people out there who just might give W a fair shot. GOP policies benefit everyone.
Never
Admit
Any
Culpability
Persistently
Actually there are republican members in the National Urban League
HEY! **I** said it first!!
(c8
THis is indeed exactly what the Pres should do: empower alternative voices.
Dan
I say, divide and conquer!
I say, you're missing the point.
It's not a matter of dividing the black organizations to sow confusion. What President Bush is trying to do is distinguish between the groups with which he can be constructively engaged, which are not reflexively anti-America, anti-Capitalism and anti-Republican, on the one hand, and groups like the NAACP, on the other hand.
There is no reason not to reach out to the former. As long as people have open minds, there is a possibility of bringing them to an understanding of Conservative values and political beliefs. On the other hand, there is no reason for the President to visit with a group that already has become very obnoxious and personal in its opposition to the President, his political party and his belief system.
What does Jesse Jackson have to do with the National Urban League? Who is throwing $15 billion down a rat hole in Africa, and how is the National Urban League involved?

I'm very glad you added the fact that it is only your perception and not reality that has brought you to such a cynical, obtuse conclusion.
I assume that for you T-ball is pandering to children, speaking to pro-Life groups is pandering to Christians, supporting the military and going to bases to speak is pandering to soldiers and their families........
Is there no limit to the pandering this President will do to create the impression that he actually is sincere and cares?? Shameful!!
What a way to body-slam the NAACP. Another example of brilliant Bush strategery. I love it!!
Of what possible importance is an organization called NUL?
Project 21 and the Urban League might leave NAACP and Jessie Jackson in the dust?
Pandering would be for him to speak at a NAACP event. For a politician, R or D, to stand up to the NAACP is the exact opposite of what you accuse the president of.
Has it occurred to you that, despite what you and I think about it, he simply thinks that it (humanitarian aid) is the right thing to do?
Marc Morial was mayor of New Orleans and left the city in deplorable shape. He and his cronies are being investigated for deals and contracts he made even now. I can only imagine what he's up to with the Urban League!
This is a man who didn't have the decency to show up when President Bush visited New Orleans. He's not only a liberal, but a shifty criminal one at that. Now he's Urban League President and W goes to him, quite a boost to his already immense ego.
I know why W is speaking there, but I'm afraid he's wasting his time.
What a bunch of lowlifes...
Isn't that what I said. He is assuring us that he is indeed compassionate. I and those who may stay away on election day just think that the conservative side needs more work.
Like that's gonna help.
Not too many real conservatives believe the President to be a dishonest man, as you obviously do.
You're in a very small crowd..........probably because all the facts about him fly in the face of your cynicism, and most people know better by now.........
Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
Exactly. This is good news, and hopefully it will be reported as such by the media.
How about simply, "Americans"?
And you know this, because...????????
I'm glad that GWB is going to do this and I hope he receives a decent and respectful-of-the-office kind of reception. This could do a lot of good.
The odd exception will prove the rule.
Give me a break! When the conservative base takes a walk...isn't that dandy? So, you're gonna take your ball and go home. And I suppose by not voting, you'll be sending a message to the Republican party right? Well, thanks for nothing pal.
For those of us working our tails off to get this man re-elected we will know who to thank if our efforts fail.
I see in your post ignorance, class envy, and the evidence of reading too many conspiracy theories.
George W. Bush has the largest support among his base of any previous incumbant President. (over 90%)
You, and the other 13 of you who are going to 'take a walk on election day' aren't going to affect the outcome of the election, because the grassroots is fired up, and GOOD CITIZENS are going to show up in droves to vote for this fine man who is our President.
But if you don't vote, you have a MORAL OBLIGATION to SHUT UP afterwards, because you have forfeited any right you have as a citizen of this Republic to speak out.
(I used to be worried about fringers like you. Now I just pity you).
Let him "take his ball and go home," forfeit his rights as a citizen, and do his best to contribute to the downfall of this country.
All these guys care about is themselves and their own narrow ideology........not the country, or the rest of us.
I've seen over the years that they're most of them are not really conservatives. They're either egotists or insecure, but in either case, they deserve our pity........and our prayer.
