Man killed while trying to blow up Iraqi gas pipeline Associated Press
KIRKUK, Iraq - A saboteur attempting to plant a bomb Saturday under a natural gas pipeline set off the explosion early and killed himself, authorities said.
The explosion that occurred early Saturday in Riayd, about 45 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Baghdad, did not damage the line, said Col. Sarhat Qader of the Iraqi police in Kirkuk.
"He was blown to pieces while trying to place it into the hole in the ground," Qader said.
Insurgents frequently target Iraq's oil infrastructure and repeated bombings on pipelines have disrupted exports, robbing Iraq of hundreds of millions of dollars in much-needed reconstruction funds.
On Thursday, in separate incidents, saboteurs attacked two northern crude oil lines, forcing a halt in exports from Kirkuk to the Turkish port of Ceyhan. Smugglers also damaged a key southern pipeline, but the attack had no impact on exports.

The new Iraqi government should institute an infrastructure conscription corp of citizens to protect the entire length of all pipelines. These pipelines carry the nation's blood and for the forseeable future they should be protected - every stinkin' inch.

"The bomber probably wasn't even Iraqi."
If there has been one major unforseen circumstance of this war, it has been that the Iraqi people are sniveling, whining, little nothings who probably don't have what it takes to deserve democracy. I guess we just misunderestimated them.

Handling demolitions charges isn't for people who can't follow instructions.
If you're not fully trained in the use of explosives, and don't score high on the 'attention to detail' or 'common sense' scales, you should either admit that you're only 'suicide bomber' material, or leave the jihad for others.
I'm always happy to see bombers and bombmakers taken down by their own incompetence. It really illustrates the totality of their failure.

We need to invent something that will explode these things before they are intended to explode. Somewhere in the fading recesses of my recall there is an impression of a FR post addressing that very thing. It seems that in one of the British adventures in SE Asia they were being targeted by insurgents using stolen munitions. Grenade attacks were particularly devastating. In violation of all OSHA standards the Brits "allowed" a large quantity of grenades with 2 second fuses (instead of the standard four) to be filched by the bad guys.
Empire killers by the score began turning up sans hands. As might be expected it dampened the enthusiasm for chucking grenades. Maybe we could corrupt their supply lines with similar devices.
