FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A golfer who was born a hermaphrodite was banned from a woman's tournament because her birth certificate lists her gender as male.
Instead, 40-year-old Danielle Swope will play in Saturday's qualifier for the Fort Wayne Men's City Tournament.
"I have respect for the men for at least giving me the opportunity to play. The women I don't have any respect for," Swope said in The Journal Gazette on Sunday.
Swope said she was born in Meridian, Miss., with both male and female reproductive organs and underwent gender-reassignment operations to become completely female.
But her Mississippi birth certificate states she was born male. The Fort Wayne Women's Golf Association said that was why Swope could not play in the Women's City Golf Tournament. Swope, who took up golf about two years ago, also was barred from last year's tournament.

That's quite a physique! In any event, as a weekend golfer, I have to wonder whether anyone who took up the sport only two years ago is ready for tournament play.
Hell Anika Sorenson got to play in a mens tournament and she didn't even have to attach any extra parts to qualify!
His/her/it's agenda is NOT GOLF.
Some people, after 2 years are scratch golfers. They are rare, very rare. But, may of these city, county, etc... golf tournaments are designed for the weekend warrior and are often handicap play.

.... The USGA put the "female at birth" clause in its entry forms in 1989, while the LPGA Tour added the restriction in 1991. The reason for that restriction was Charlotte Wood, a transsexual who was 50 when she finished third in the 1987 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur and reached the semifinals of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur.
Unlike Wood or Australia's Mianne Bagger--both of whom were born male--Swope was born with both ovaries and testicles, reported the Journal Gazette, which reviewed her medical records. Swope was raised as a boy, and her mother had her undergo a hysterectomy at age 11, she said.
Swope moved to Indiana in 1992. From 1995 to 1997, she said, she underwent a series of surgeries to make her completely female. She legally changed her name from Daniel Swope to Danielle Swope in 1996. Swope, who is 5 foot 4 and weighs 160 pounds, has a handicap index of 11.2. She said Fort Wayne women's golf officials told her that they were concerned she might "overpower" the tournament competition. Officials did not understand that her body does not produce testosterone at the same levels as someone who was born completely male, Swope said.
Franze, the Fort Wayne golf official, said it was Swope's birth certificate--not competitive concerns--that kept her out of the tournament. "That was never a point in this," Franze told the Journal Gazette. "The point is, she was born male, and our participants have to be born female. That's the bottom line. The USGA and the Indiana state association go by that." Swope wants to have her birth certificate changed to state she was born female. According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, such a change could be made under a court order, though the change would have to be noted on the document.

Someone who was born a hermaphrodite and then sought medical treatment as a way to physically assign herself to a single sex is worlds apart from someone who was physically whole and decided to change their sex.
But shouldn't a chromosone check have decided this issue? They've been using that for the Olympics for quite some time.
Perhaps her chromosones didn't fit into the standard XX or XY category?
Perhaps there should be an instant XY/XX DNA test.
it is worth noting transexual is still a mental illness. It is treated with cosmetic mutilation surgery.
A hermaphrodite is a little different than someone who "chooses" to have an operation to change their equipment. Most of the time the parents just pick a side--do you want a boy or a girl? Then that's the way the child gets raised. Someone else chooses their sexuality. It's a little more complicated than jokes or agendas.

I would have to side with the golfer - *SHE* should be allowed to play as a female.
This is not one of those I "feel" like a woman therefore I ..... wierdos.
This person was one of the rarities that are born with a defect that makes the "true sex" non-distinguishable until they begin to mature and their true-self begins to emerge.
There have been many "doctor's choice" operations of selecting a male-path at birth and the brain turns out female, and vice versa.
It seems even this golfer's chromosomes are not the issue, though it would be interesting to see what a DNA test would show. Golf's governing authorities go by birth certificate, and this person's says "male."

Not every one fits into the XX or XY classifications. Babies with XXY and XXXY are born and survive to maturity. A chromosomal examination of this person may well reveal that she is one such case.
Other people are born as mosaics (I think that's the word), where different cells in their bodies have different chromosomes. A common example is a calico cat. I have one. Most of her fur is white, but there are numerous patches of orange tabby and gray tabby, each one of which has a pattern that matches what the pattern is like on a full tabby of the same size in that location. Calico males are very rare, and I'm not sure they're able to breed.

What's between their legs matters not. Whether or not the fetal brain was flooded with testosterone by virtue of a Y-chromo is what casts the die.
I get so mad when I hear about parents who decide early on in the life of their hermaphrodite child which sex to go with. It plays into the feminists' theory that our sex differnces are merely a matter of societal conditioning. Then the poor child grows up and realizes that his/her parents chose wrong. I wish there was a law to protect these children from sexual assignment surgery until they are old enough to know what sex THEY believe themselves to be. Or at least go with what the chromosomes say, XX or XY. Some parents choose to ignore this and raise their child as what they want instead! No wonder this poor woman's mother forced a hysterectomy on her at the age of 11. She probably started developing breasts and liking boys but mom and dad still wanted a boy....tragic.
