AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

By JOHN SOLOMON

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.

Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.

The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.

When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Anyone who has time, please post a thread about Rush's comments today on his show. It's unlikely I'll be available to listen at noon and expect he'll be all over this story.

Lt Col Robert "Buzz" Paterson was just on with Steve Malzberg sitting in for Bill Bennet's Morning in America radio show.

He said this may have something to do with a case where Sandy Berger had a window to take out Osama Bin Hidin and he couldn't get through to Bubba for 2 hours and the window had closed by then.

Great imitation of William Shakespeare...or as my 10th grade English teacher called him: Willie Quiverdart. Don't ask me why that has stuck in my head these 41 years. Half the time I can't remember what I had for lunch.

I so hope you are right, truthandlife. I have been waiting and waiting and waiting....for so much to finally break open and expose the truth.

Every time I think the BIG story comes along and the world can't possibly ignore it, they do.

I keep thinking there are plans for all the lying and corruption and all-round evilness of the left to be brought into the light. I will be so sick at heart if this does not happen.

I hope I am not being naively optimistic. I just want President Bush exonerated...in big letters, with banners flying across the sky, on the front pages, across the airwaves, on all the screens, etc. You get my drift.

Sadly, I was right. These people are utterly predictable.

It's already all over the local talk shows. Same type of comments you would see here.

Will this country be rid of the blight known as the Clinton Administration at any time in the future? Hopefully before what will be known as the Clinton Administration II takes office?

every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced

It depends on what the definition of "every" is. I'm sure one of the biggest continuing expenses of the Clinton crime family is the constant upgrading and maintenance of paper shredders.

I was wondering more about the word "requested." It's tough to request things which aren't known to exist, even if they might be helpful.

LOL...so Gergen wants us to believe that Berger is lying when he says he DID do it?

Boy am I dumb!

Kind of like lying to one's diary, eh?

This is not the first time a Clinton official was investigated for losing / mishandling Top Secret information.

Not to mention the wholesale looting of nuclear secrets to China.

I haven't had a chance to finish this thread yet, but I just found this in the Evansville Indiana paper (taken from AP).

"WASHINGTON Political veteran David Gergen says former national security adviser Sandy Berger "would never do anything to compromise" U-S security.

Berger, who worked in the Clinton administration, is being investigated in the disappearance of documents that were to be turned over to the panel investigating Nine-Eleven.

Gergen tells N-B-C's "Today" show the incident is "more innocent than it looks." He says he finds it "suspicious" that word of the Berger probe emerges as the panel prepares to release its report.

He says the probe began several months ago."

Who is this moron?

This story is barely getting mentioned

I would respectively disagree. It's all over the air waves and TV

You are correct. Allow me to clarify.

The coverage is NOT balanced. The MSM is in full CYA spin for the Clintonistas (see Post #1613 to me) And you are correct, it will be on talk radio today. Rush, Hannity, & O’Reily will have Berger for lunch. Unforntantely, I am cubicle bound.

I am depending on FReepers (and you!) to keep me up to speed today.

Thanks!

The left is blaming the CIA and Tenet for the so called mistaken bombing of the Chinese Embassy.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention ("knowingly removed") of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP."

Translation...I deeply regret I was caught.
