I went to Arizona once in September, or maybe October. It was about 125 degrees in the shade.....It seemed like the end of the world. Streets were empty, not a soul walking around...Weird stuff...

Two thoughts:
One, if you want to get acclimated to Baghdad, Iraq, live a while in Phoenix. That temperature that they report is taken in the shade. You take a towel or hot pad to get into your car.
Two, I grew up just northwest of Phoenix, on a ranch, with no electricity. It can be done. However, now, most buildings in Phoenix rapidly become solar ovens without power.

some guy equates summertime phx with hell. where do you live joe? i can go outside on a whim.. all year. its hot today.. no biggie at all. what does winter bring you? want to go outside? better plan. wow.. i go on my porch and say "its hot" as i listen to rush and drink an iced coffee. life sux! if only i had to deal with shoveling my driveway so i could take my car out and let it rust, then everything would be fine.

Sounds like the old 18" of adobe vs 'wall of windows' argument.

Caves are cool for a reason; same as greenhouses need ventilation for a reason.

Modern architects remind me of how politicians "solve" a problem: They throw money, in the form or more conditioning & power, at it.

An APS transformer caught fire this morning, ...

Was there a fire nearby that engulfed the transformer?

Or did the transformer fail internally and fault to the core ground? What was the primary and secondary voltage?

I'm assuming this was a outer ring subtransmission transformer, oil-filled, copper wound H & X with a 115 degree C rise. If so, then the external ambient had absolutely nothing to do with it's failure.

More likely a winding shorted to the core ground, due to a sudden increase in load current over a weak connection and a pocket of acetylene and other gases developed as the mineral oil rapidly decomposed, in which case the rise in internal pressure from expanding gases is too quick for the Pressure Relief device to react and trip the upstream breaker resulting in a rupture of the case and the arcing from the ground igniting the oil.

That was the determination of the last Generator Step-up transformer (20,000 Volt to 345,000 Volt) failure I was part of. That one ripped the top of the transformer top back like a sardine can and sent burning oil down the Transmission Yard Control Conduit, essentially taking 2 units or 1,200 Megawatts of generation off-line. Transformers in this range are constructed with 0.75 inch welded steel plate. The fire was so intense it ignited the aluminum 5,000 Volt, 5,000 Amp Auxiliary bus and it burned clear back to the Potential Transformers below the generator in the power plant.

Hey Karl....

Sad to say, but *very* happy too, hehehe, not for much longer...

After some *long* thought and *intense* planning, watching those >insane< RE prices, well lets just say plans are in the works as I type this. The fight is all but lost here, and life is so short, so the dream we've thought about for 10 years now maybe happening.....

Yeah, and they've continued to go up. Karl, you and I both know, this wont last forever. It's a critical factor in our decision.

Arizona? Not me buddy. They last place I want to be is closer than I already am to the southern border.

We've done a few years of home work, traveling, reading etc. We do not like extreme, brutal heat that AZ offers. Not only that, we don't want a landscape that looks as if a few dozen 10 mega-ton bombs went off, and that's what most of AZ, NM, TX etc look like. And we want water, lakes, rivers, few people, and no humidity etc...LOL, does it sound like I want it all? hehe....

I can recall leaving Houston, and being very uncomfortable at 85 degrees. I landed in Phoenix, where it was 102, and went for a walk. It felt great !

The "dry heat" thing is no joke. High humidity is incredibly stifling.

Everyone I talk to from Texas keep telling me it's really green. My husband's best friend moved to the Dallas area a couple years ago and was telling me that he really wanted to stay in Texas, since it wasn't as ugly as the desert area of Arizona. His second option is wanting to move to northern Arizona.

The problem is, the last thing we want to do is move one inch closer to the Mexican border, *or* be in a state that borders that country. I want to be *away* from it. I've had enough! And I don't want brutal heat *or* humidity. So that eliminates NM, TX, AZ etc......

Two druggies are meeting in the desert for a drug deal. Suddenly the police burst onto the scene.

"It's the heat," says one druggie.

"Nah, it's the humidity," says the other.

Hehe...That is true to a certain extent Lewis.

It's just about time for us to take down the flag lewis.

It's been a *long* time planning, researching, watching property rates etc.

In the past 7 years we've traveled looking in many different regions and areas. We've finally had it nailed down about two years ago, as we continued watching RE prices and our own piece of Cal. When we found that there were many other Hadenufs in the area we found, we were very pleased. They've drawn a line, and I want to be on their side of that line.

Even though we still live in a nice area here, we've come to the conclusion, it's all but lost, my fight here is all but over, and it's time.

Everyone in my circle/family completely agrees. The reasons are *many* Lewis, like RE values, (we know they wont last forever) and the state of affairs, ie: *Way* to many people, to many illegals, traffic from hell, expense, pollution, endless foreigners with arrogant attitudes, crazies, sickos, war like crime, and I am just so damn tired of feeling like a foreigner in my own land.

There are a few other reasons that I wont mention here.

We have come to the conclusion that life is too short, and we know it will never be like it was, not even close, no matter what, and will only grow worse and more disturbing every year.

Will there be Democrats, libs, open border Republicans, crime, and yes even a few illegals where we are going? Yes. But to such a small degree in comparison, we'll just laugh and hardly notice.

Everyone has to do what they have to do.

To be honest, I will be leaving with a tear in my eye. But as I look back, I will try and remember my beloved state the way it used to be.

As I look forward, I realize the reality of what I am leaving behind and it gives me some hope. .Looking forward with renewed hope, excitment and optimism.. It was a love hate thing for me and my family for the past 10 years or so. Finally, the anger and hate over came that love.

We grew tired of shaking our heads in disgust.

If everything goes as planned, we will hold the flag lowering ceremony in several weeks.
