Clinic Doctor Says Cat Has Genetic Defect
POSTED: 1:11 am EDT July 21, 2004 UPDATED: 2:51 pm EDT July 21, 2004
A 3-pound cat in Perkin, Ill., has been verified as the world's smallest domestic cat, according to a Local 6 News report.
The 2-year-old cat, named Mr. Peebles, is officially listed as the smallest living domestic cat by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Mr. Peebles lives in the Good Shepherd Veterinary Clinic in Pekin. The clinic's employees serve as collective co-owners.
"I do bring him to bed with me at night between my husband and I," Dr. Donna Sassman said. "And he curls up in my arms and sleeps next to my neck when it's cold. And one of his best habits (is that) he'll lick me on the chin at night to give me a kiss."
A doctor at the clinic said that Mr. Peebles has a genetic defect. And he's expected to hold onto his title for some time.
Because he's already past the age when a cat reaches normal size, Mr. Peebles probably won't get any bigger, according to the report.
The clinic said he was named after a ventriloquist's dummy on an episode of "Seinfeld."

"It's not the size of the cat in the ZOT, it's the size of the ZOT in the cat!"

Awwww, he's a cute little thing. I imagine someone will be along any time to tell us how they wish all cats were dead.

I'm no cat expert, but that doesn't seem too small, at least not record-setting small.
tiny kitty ping
awwwwww
I am hoping she can be made an honorary Viking Kitty.
Big deal. I got the world's most spoiled cat.

Awwww, he's a doll!
OK, that was inspired.
He's very cute.

My condolances. My little kitty is 22 years old and still kicking (with some daily meds).
I so dread the day that I have to face what you are.
I believe profoundly that our beloved pets await us in Heaven.
I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. It's never easy to lose one's little fur friends.
Tiny but still looks like a typical cat with a 'tude.
My condolences for your loss. It's never easy. My 9yo Priscilla is fighting kidney disease - doing ok so far, but I know I can lose her at any time. It makes the time I spend with her all the more precious.
Ohh.....I'm so sorry.
BTW, on the topic of this article, I've been waiting for our genetic engineering skills to get good enough to intentionally produce small cats. Can you imagine if they could stay kittens forever?
"I'll vouch for you."
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

I always thinks of my deceased pets when I read this.
But, this is a sign to fill it with another little furball, who, at this very minute, is waiting for you to come get her.
Oh geez....LOL!
Funniest picture/caption combination in while.
Why does he look like he has a beer belly?
Wow, the 22 pounder that lives in my house could swallow that one whole. A bat recently got into my house via a bathroom vent with a broken screen, and my big black cat totally surprised me by leaping 6 feet off the counter and assassinating that bat in midair within 30 seconds of it's entry.
I agree about kitties waiting for us in Heaven. It couldn't be Heaven without them.
I'm actually far more of a dog person, but that's a cat to respect!
I don't know, even a six pounds is very small for a full grown cat. 3 pounds seems reasonable for a record-setting cat.
Is there no English requirement for entrance to medical schools? Maybe it's not medical... hmmm. Never mind.
OH! I WANT ONE OF THOSE!
I have a cat I always considered to be small, but he probably weighs two and a half Peebles.
Good one! Got a genuine LOL out of that :)
Hmmm, I have no idea.
Actually, the pictures just make him look big. He's pretty sleek.
I'm so sorry for you.
LOL, one of my cats looks just like that, except he's black and with shorter fur. Still, he sometimes resembles a small, very soft bear instead of a cat.
ROFPMP
Beautiful kitty!
Now that's funny
Now that's funny
