Archives Staff Was Suspicious of Berger
Washington Post ^ | July 22, 2004 | John F. Harris and Susan Schmidt

Posted on 07/21/2004 9:25:10 PM PDT by Remember_Salamis

Last Oct. 2, former Clinton national security adviser Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger stayed huddled over papers at the National Archives until 8 p.m.

What he did not know as he labored through that long Thursday was that the same Archives employees who were solicitously retrieving documents for him were also watching their important visitor with a suspicious eye.

After Berger's previous visit, in September, Archives officials believed documents were missing. This time, they specially coded the papers to more easily tell whether some went missing, said government officials and legal sources familiar with the case.

The notion of one of Washington's most respected foreign policy figures being subjected to treatment that had at least a faint odor of a sting operation is a strange one. But the peculiarities -- and conflicting versions of events and possible motives -- were just then beginning in a case that this week bucked Berger out of an esteemed position as a leader of the Democratic government-in-waiting that had assembled around presidential nominee John F. Kerry.

As his attorneys tell it, Berger had no idea in October that documents were missing from the Archives, or that archivists suspected him in the disappearance. It was not until two days later, on Saturday, Oct. 4, that he was contacted by Archives employees who said that they were concerned about missing files, from his September and October visits. This call -- in Berger's version of the chronology, which is disputed in essential respects by a government official with knowledge of the investigation -- was made with a tone of concern, but not accusation.

Yup. We have moved into another realm with direct confirmation from a legitimate source that he stole the same docs 4-5 times too.

I'm going to have to change my schedule around for the next few days.

Have you read Rich Lowry's book Legacy? It opened my eyes about a lot of things I didn't know.

Here's the best theory I've heard;

Someone printed 10 copies of some proposal. The proposal was to actually DO something about the intelligence they had that Bin Laden & co. were trying to cause trouble at the Millenium celebrations (Dec. 2000).

The copies were circulated to the higher-ups, Berger, Allbright, Cohen, the usual suspects.

They all wrote their notes and reactions on their own copies, which amounted to "this won't go over", "we need to poll this", "Can't support this", etc. So there were 10 copies of the same doc, but with separate notes.,

Berger didn't want the Commission to see these notes, showing what poll slaves they were. So he pilfered all the copies.

Notice that Lockhart has known since January -- kept his mouth shut until now, only to act surprised about the timing of it. Turns out Kerry camp released the info, not the White House or Republicans.

Hilllary says, "The timing speaks for itself." How true. Is she still expecting big fallout of Kerry/Edwards ticket?

Kerry speeches may have referenced specific details about quantity of incoming cargo shipments, percentage screened, etc. DNC Chairman wants documents released IAW Freedom of Information. What happens when we see Kerry speeches plagiarizing those documents that Berger took.

Put another log on. The campaign is heating up, and the Kerry camp is going to be feeling most of it...

I've been asking for a couple of days how difficult it would be for Berger to insert a few pages. He know how to get them date/time stamped.

I think he's played a shell game. Admit to A while all the while doing B. We need to figure out B.

The Rat spin is simple --- change the subject...

The standby defense has been the "Everybody does it" defense. The Dems will find a similar incident, very small in consequence, with a republican staffer or admin staffer and spin the "well, everybody is doing it" line.

I read that Kerry dumped some pages from his Web Site relative to some Web Pages that can be traced back to stolen Berger Docs.

What I don't understand is why he went back to steal the SAME documents

And it sounds like the didn't ask for the documents back until after the 2nd attempt

Yeah about Clinton and how he sold the country down the river. It's not surprising we're still reaping the "benefits".

Now it will be interesting to see whether the Ashcroft DOJ inadvertently indicts Sandy Burglar...I count at least five felonies(five trips)

Note that President Bush, when asked called the affair "very serious" and the DOJ would carry out a full investigation. He refused to give any further comments.

and in January former White House press secretary Joe Lockhart was enlisted to remain on standby if a public controversy blossomed.

He inadvertantly got a press secretary?

OMG this is WAY too much fun!

Clinton people KNEW that AQ was in the United States and did NOTHING. They didn't even follow their OWN recommendations.

It's why Ashcroft mentioned in his 9/11 testimony that it's important to read the report because it was clear the recommendations were not followed. He said they would be hard recommendations to implement and there would be criticism and he knew that because he's in that position now post 9/11.
