Islamic Group Congratulates McKinney on Primary Win
CNSNEWS.com ^ | 7/23/04 | Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations is congratulating former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney for winning her primary race in Georgia's 4th congressional district.

McKinney beat five other Democrats on Tuesday, with enough votes to avoid a runoff, and as CAIR noted, she is favored to win her old seat back in November.

CAIR calls McKinney "a consistent friend of the American Muslim community and a strong advocate for issues of concern to Muslims, particularly the promotion of social justice and the defense of civil liberties."

Her pro-Palestinian views have not gone over well with Jewish voters, however.

McKinney made national headlines in October 2001 for pursuing a $10 million charitable contribution from a Saudi prince -- money intended to help victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani angrily returned the check, after Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal suggested that U.S. Middle East policy contributed to the terrorist attacks. The prince urged the U.S. to "re-examine its policies in the Middle East and adopt a more balanced stance toward the Palestinian cause."

Then in March 2002, McKinney suggested the Bush administration had failed to act on prior warnings of the Sept. 11 attacks.

In an interview with a Berkeley radio station, McKinney said, "We know there were numerous warnings of the events to come on September 11th . What did this administration know and when did it know it, about the events of September 11th? Who else knew, and why did they not warn the innocent people of New York who were needlessly murdered? What do they have to hide? Persons close to this administration are poised to make huge profits off America's new war," she charged.

First elected to Congress in 1992, McKinney served five terms until her primary defeat in 2002. Although she drew heavy support from the Muslim community, she could not overcome a determined Republican bid to oust her.

Thousands of Republicans crossed over and voted for Denise Majette in the 2002 Democratic primary, adding to Majette's considerable support from Jewish voters.

Following her defeat, McKinney vowed she'd be back, and it looks like she was right.

CAIR this week hailed McKinney's "promotion of balanced and forward-looking policies."

"Council on American-Islamic Relations is congratulating former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney "

An endorsement from CAIR. If someone wasn't familiar with her, that's all the information necessary to know which side she's on.

Why don't we just elect Osama and be done with the games.

Jihand Mckinney is one bug eyed freak traitor who has never upheld her oath to our Constitution.

We have very few Islamics in the GA 4th CD. McKinney took in big money, again, from out-of-the-district contributors with Arabic names.

< sigh>

I long for the days when we were part of Newt's old GA 6th, here in the north part of the county.

A few GA FReeper pings.

I'll vouch for that. Our little piece of heaven is actually a tiny fragment of Gwinnett county whereas the bulk of District 4 is Dekalb.

Guess P'Tree Corners looked awfully good to the dims when they gerrymandered us in.

Was cynthia Jihad Mckinney's district gerrymandered as to norm out political representation? Mckinney has no allegiance to America, or what we Real Americans stand for in life. To a moral and prudent person she is unfit to hold any public office. I hope the B'atch loses big time. Bush/Cheney 2004

The district is politically predominated by blacks from a wide range of economic groups (welfare - middle class - very wealthy), and in-town and university (far Left Emory) whites. The boundries are pretty much DeKalb County, with a few precints from western Gwinnett county to get the numbers right. It will be a Dem District for a long time.

I'm philosophic about McKinney. Levitan, her most serious primary opponent, probably wouldn't have voted much differently than McKinney will. Levitan would have been more of a long-term political threat. While I hate to see McKinney control the soapbox that a Congressional seat represents, she will undoubtably make a fool of herself and her party. This might be preferable to developing a potentially stronger statewide politician like Levitan, who might one day be a Senate race threat.

If the JDL ever needed more proof that the Democratic Party has been co-opted by darkside forces, this is it.

Yet still, somehow I think the GOP will continue to be blamed (wrongly) as the party of intolerance and bigotry.

Question for thread readers: If McKinney is re-elected *shudder*, does she become a second-time freshman Congresswoman or does she revert to her previous seniority status in terms of commitee placements, political caucus etc.?

I'm curious if she's able to regain any of the trappings of power she accrued during her past tenure as Representative.

When someone like this can get elected to office, it reinforces why our founding father placed strict guidelines on who could vote. Of course, according to today's standards, our founding fathers were denying civil liberties by not letting idiots with no loyalty to their country vote.
