Actually, the guy doesn't even realize what he is saying. Islam hasn't defeated any of their enemies, it looks like the US has defeated the enemies of Islam. And the reason he fears democracy is because he doesn't understand what the US is all about.
The Iraqi people have been rather shocked to find out just how religious American really are. They are also beginning to understand that worshiping God because you actually WANT to is a greater joy than worship as a result of force.
