Eclectic Crowd for Annual Bohemian Grove Gathering-Powell, Rumsfeld, Grateful Dead top Guest List
Santa Rosa Press Democrat ^ | 7/24/04 | Derek Moore

The summer retreat that Herbert Hoover called 'The greatest men's party on earth' is underway in Monte Rio, and the guest list is eclectic as ever.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, former Greatful Dead bandmates, and winemaker Robert Mondavi are all scheduled to attend the 125th Midsummer three week Encampment of the Bohemian Club in San Francisco.

So too, are conservative author Bill Buckley Jr. and television commentator Chris Matthews.

Mandalay Camp is the traditional seat of power in Bohemian Grove. Mandalay is one of 119 camps in the club's 2,800 acre redwood grove east of Monte Rio that over 2,500 men are scheduled to attend.

The camp is so far up the fern covered bank in the canyon that it has its own incline railway to haul firewood and supplies. This year's guest list for Mandalay includes: George Schultz former US Secretary of State, David O' Reilly, chairman Chevron/Texaco, HB Atwater Jr. CEO General Mills and Edgar Kaiser Jr. the founder of the Kaiser Foundation.

Rumsfeld and President George W. Bush are members of the 'Hill Billies' camp although it is unclear if the President of the United States will attend in an election year.

The associations of powerful men made possible by Bohemian Grove Encampment have raised the ire of protestors who charge that captians of industry and govermental officials discuss business matters in secret violating the groves official motto: 'Weaving spiders come not here.'

Of particular interest to observers are the 'Lakeside Talks,' which this year include: An untitled talk by David Gergen, commentator and advisor to Republican and Democratic Presidents. 'The Landscape of American Politics' by NY Times columnist David Brock, and 'The Long War of the 20th Century,' by former CIA director James Woolsey.

"Occidental resident Mickey Hart will join fellow Grateful Dead member Bob Weir. The musicians, along with rocker Steve Miller,

Well AllRight !!!!

I've been so disapointed to read name after name of musicians I admired lined up on the left.

Then here's Bobby and Mickey and even Steve Miller all at the conservative gig ... wow !!!!

Weir and Hart were BIG Al Gore supporters in the last campaign, and as The Dead are on their summer tour, I don't see how they will be able to attend.

I despise the word eclectic.

Every time I hear it I think of the Three Stooges skit...

"Slowly I turned, step by step...."

Interesting thread, but I don't think it is actually true.

Their schedule puts them in Indiana tonight. And they are booked solid, in the east for the near future.

This paranoia by the left over the Boho Grove (and its cowboy version, Rancheros Visitadores)has been going on since about the early 70's when a book by one of the counter-culturalists was written about the secret conniving and scheming that took place there.

That paranoia is spread equally amongst the tinfoilers on both sides of the aisle.

They say former Grateful dead members although I doubt no one really ever leaves the band.
