The following is the text of an item from the Presidential Daily Brief received by President William J. Clinton on December 4, 1998. Redacted material is indicated in brackets.
SUBJECT: Bin Ladin Preparing to Hijack US Aircraft and Other Attacks
1. Reporting [] suggests Bin Ladin and his allies are preparing for attacks in the US, including an aircraft hijacking to obtain the release of Shaykh Umar Abd al-Rahman, Ramzi Yousef, and Muhammad Sadiq Awda. One source quoted a senior member of the Gamaat al-Islamiyya (IG) saying that, as of late October, the IG had completed planning for an operation in the US on behalf of Bin Ladin, but that the operation was on hold.A senior Bin Ladin operative from Saudi Arabia was to visit IG counterparts in the US soon thereafter to discuss optionsperhaps including an aircraft hijacking.
IG leader Islambuli in late September was planning to hijack a US airliner during the next couple of weeks to free Abd al- Rahman and the other prisoners, according to what may be a different source.
The same source late last month said that Bin Ladin might implement plans to hijack US aircraft before the beginning of Ramadan on 20 December and that two members of the operational team had evaded security checks during a recent trial run at an unidentified New York airport. []
2. Some members of the Bin Ladin network have received hijack training, according to various sources, but no group directly tied to Bin Ladins al-Qaida organization has ever carried out an aircraft hijacking.Bin Ladin could be weighing other types of operations against US aircraft.According to [] the IG in October obtained SA-7 missiles and intended to move them from Yemen into Saudi Arabia to shoot down an Egyptian plane or, if unsuccessful, a US military or civilian aircraft.
A [] in October told us that unspecified extremist elements in Yemen had acquired SA-7s. []
3. [] indicate the Bin Ladin organization or its allies are moving closer to implementing anti-US attacks at unspecified locations, but we do not know whether they are related to attacks on aircraft. A Bin Ladin associate in Sudan late last month told a colleague in Kandahar that he had shipped a group of containers to Afghanistan. Bin Ladin associates also talked about the movement of containers to Afghanistan before the East Africa bombings.
In other [] Bin Ladin associates last month discussed picking up a package in Malaysia. One told his colleague in Malaysia that theywere in the ninth month [of pregnancy]. An alleged Bin Ladin supporter in Yemen late last month remarked to his mother that he planned to work in commerce from abroad and said his impending marriage, which would take place soon, would be a surprise.Commerce and marriage often are codewords for terrorist attacks. []
FYI
The media sure raised hell over that. I remember it well.
Funny, but I don't remember Richard Ben-Veniste demanding National Security Adviser Samuel "Sandy" R. Berger read the title of this Presidential Daily Briefing aloud during the 9/11 Commission hearings.
bump
it wasn't Ben Veniste's job to do so - that's what the people on our side of the aisle should have done. but we all know the story there.
Can the Dems do anything but lie, mislead, cheat, fornicate, steal, and desecrate?! How can they even look in the mirror?
I don't believe the undead show up in mirrors. ;-)
the 9/11 Report is really selling well. I was in my local Borders today and only one copy, which I bought, was left. At the checkout counter,I asked the clerk how it was doing since I had the last copy. She said that it has sold out.And this after it being out for only 5(?)days.
If I'm not mistaken this is big news isn't it? Is this the first time this PDB has been released to the public?
In his meeting with Tenet, Berger focused most, however, on the question
of what was to be done with Bin Ladin if he were actually captured. He worried
that the hard evidence against Bin Ladin was still skimpy and that there
was a danger of snatching him and bringing him to the United States only to
see him acquitted.24

How can they look in the mirror? Easy..the devil has no reflection.
THANKS.

? The media raised hell about the Aug 6, 2001 PDB not the Dec 4, 1998 PDB. I wonder what the Jersey girls have to say about this?
Good pickup True Capitalist. AQ with SA-7s . Hmmm, I wonder if that could be connected to TWA 800.
And you never will!
Yep. Sorry, I forgot to include the obligatory .
Maybe they will discuss this PDB on the Sunday Morning Political Shows!!
I listened to the 911 Commission press conference.
My feeling is the FACTS (like this one) defuse and refute most of the infantile rants of the left. (I plan to read the full report.)
As such, the FACTS contained therein are more useful to Bush, than to Kerry.
What goes around comes around.

Don't forget the generous airline industry contributions to the DNC after the committee issued its findings.
This is long before the timely "documents" that old Sandy the Burglar purged.
Read this and you understand why a US President's hair goes white before departure of office. Bush reads (briefed) one of these daily. Imagine what is in those that would demand a heightened terror alert! We pray for Bush to have divine guidance in those important matters.
That's what HS is SUPPOSED to do.

It was sold out already in the three book stores I went to in NYC on the day it was released. Each store had new shipments arriving the next day and by noon one store had sold out of all their copies again. It took me five trips to secure a copy, but that may be a NYC thing.
According to the 9/11 Commission Report on page 83, The Gore Commission Report issued in 1997 regarding aviation safety and security "did not discuss the possibility of suicide hijackings."

Yes. The final 9/11 Commission Report is the first time the text of this PDB has been seen in public. Last weekend the Washington Post got a heads up on the content of the PDB:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58615-2004Jul17.html
Susan Schmidt of The Washington Post was read the text of the brief over the phone by an anonymous government official.A Bush White House official told the Post there is "no record or recollection of the new White House team having been briefed on that threat information."
If you want to see something really SCARY....turn to page 148..
You and I see a filthy animal who should be interrogated by any means necessary. The left on the other hand, see a man in need of a hot meal and good attorney.
Got it, Forwarded it, thanks.

I don't suppose there is any indication of where the training was received. Solmon Pak airfield maybe?
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent miscellaneous ping list.
What was on page 148?
You'll have to go buy the book.
Please post and flag us when you find something really good in your reading that is like a poke in the eye with a sharp stick for the liberal mediots.
The book version doesn't have an index, but in adobe you can run a SEARCH for specific words. For example the word "misspoken" only occurs once, in footnote 7 on page 480, when President Clinton told the Commission he had "misspoken" when he was videotaped describing how Sudan had offer to turn over Bin Ladin to the U.S. and he refused to accept their offer.
That was the first thing I did. :)

Page 148.......
Also, worth underlining is footnote 11 on page 500: "In the margin next to Clarke's suggestion to attack al Qaeda facilities in the week before January 1, 2000, Berger wrote "no."
Another good word to search in Adobe is "Berger". A noteworthy appearance is at footnote 46 on page 482: "We did not find documentation on the after-action review mentioned by Berger."
Thanks for your posts!
Please do us a favor and some time in the next few weeks post a thread with your important findings.
Then we can have that thread for all of us and those who monitor Free Republic.
Good Work!
Some commentator on the day of release zeroed right in on that. Funny how the media hasn't played that up. :-/
You have to go to p117 to read what after action report they're talking about.......It was after action report after an Aug. 20 air strike on UBL's camps..
Or then cryptically stating "Until today, that title was secret".
With Condi, he did that with the 2001 PDB. Problem is, the title had been publicized via a press briefing and then published on the front page of the Washington Post in 2002. Ben Veniste lied.
The 2001 PDB was leaked in 2002 to spur the formation of this commission. It was the foundation that led to the New York Post's infamous "Bush Knew" headline. It was then spoken of and described by Condi Rice and Ari Fleischer, yet during the commission everyone developed amnesia and acted like they just found out about its existance and then ben Veniste pulled that lie about the title being tightly kept under wraps.
We know that some documents Berger took were 1999. We also know he had notes from "the nineties" about ME peace talks. God knows what else, but items from 1998 surely would have been reviewed by him and perhaps "cleaned up". There has not been full disclosure or accounting of what's missing.
