Eating our own...Time to make a new start in Free Republic.
7-26-04 | Bob J

Posted on 07/26/2004 7:41:11 PM PDT by Bob J

The last few months I've seen an increasing trend for FReepers to start going for each others jugular. Sometimes we forget (I've certainly done it myself) that in the grand scheme of things, we are on the same team. We may disagree on priorities or how far we are willing to go, but we have enough enemy in the left without creating more amongst ourselves. We can disagree but be civil to each other. We can debate nuance, but not believe that our personal positions are more important than the health of the whole. Let's argue vigorously but remind ourselves the guy whose trachia we are ripping out today may be sitting next to us in a foxhole tommorrow.

I'm going to propose that we all make a new start. Let's put all past differences behind us and resolve to band together and fight the good fight, the elimination of liberalism as a significant culturual influence in America...and see that to its end in our lifetimes.

If you agree, please post your thoughts and ping your lists and your friends to this thread.

All the stories I have posted (do the background check) have received commentary from very knowledgeable Freepers..often
laced with wit. Even those stories I have commented on myself have been the same. Guess in my past couple years at FR I have not experienced this "eating our own"...and these stories to which I refer have most always had heavy response.

No problem here.

Thanks for writing this. I have been told that I am really not a Republican. I have been accused of being a Democratic operative. The person even made disgusting off-color remarks. This makes conservatives look really crude and ignorant---everything the opposition says about us.

All I said was that I thought that Kerry probably didn't know about what Berger was up to. I gave all my reasons.

The people on the forum were misquoting a Republican Senator and making it seem like he said something he really didn't say. Here is the thread.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1175028/posts

This forum has been a real turn-off lately because of the vulgarity and nastiness. People don't state their views and give examples. They just call others names.

Bob, the effective tools and resources smartly employed by the FRN always trumps a half dozen ubiquitous Freeper individuals in D.C. who think cross-dressing in embarassing costumes at a Hillary Clinton book signing best pursues Free Republic's public and real world interests.

I'm here to say ... Kristinn has an egocentric agenda going on.

One more thing ... Any endeavor that works to gain access, influence and success in the institutions of political power is righteous, powerful and worth exploiting. FRN does that.

Standing around any street in a costume, carrying a sign or presenting some political agenda signifies a LOSER! A LOSER! Only political losers, the ignorant or disconnected from power structures, protest on the streets. Freepers operate expertly and successfully deep in the influential institutions of government, not carrying a sign outside some bookstore or politician's office.

Most DC "Freeps" are embarrasing. Standing on a sidewalk with a sign is a symbol of weakness.

Bill,

Freepers being such a fractious bunch, it figured that someone would quickly and aggressively refuse to get with the program. But you did it so quickly, and simply.

I agree with the general tenor of Bob J's appeal. On the other hand, I don't think most Freepers want to get involved in group hugs as on the "Mary Tyler Show." LOL.

Then anyone reading a discussion will be able to see right away the nature of the person they're looking at, and judge his imbecilic comments accordingly.

I find it helpful, before I hit POST on an angry retort, to check the person's latest posts. That can tell you alot about whether or not it would be worth your time to try to debate.

If my proposal were to come to fruition, I don't think there'd be a single freeper who'd escape at least a small number of altogether unflattering comments (I can already see some of the remarks that would come my way 8-[ ). It's the general tenor that would count. And listing them in random order would help ensure that minority comments stay relatively spaced apart.

Well in that case, thanks for posting ;-)

Seriously, though, that approach can be somewhat ambiguous. They could always claim that the majority of their posts are so belligerent because they're intended to target what they consider to be unintelligent and anticonservative posts. On the other hand, a page full of unflattering comments from fellow freepers, available for all to see, would probably take a few of them down a peg or two.

I'm basing this on the assumption that most sane freepers (such as yourself, based on your comments) tend to avoid these types. As a result, threads with them on it usually feature only them, their small little band of cheerleaders, and those hardy souls that wish to go head to head with them and deal with their abuse. That makes it look like their numbers are stronger than they actually are. Having a feedback page can change that perception to something a little closer to reality.

Bob it depends on what you mean when you allude to the 'good of the whole, as opposed to the individual'. that is collectivism. truth comes from God and truth does not change. Liberty and freedom can only exist when we have a Godly people. So when many in the GOP continue to slide to the left and become basically liberal socialists, of course the people on the right arent going to crouch down and accept it, so as not to 'hurt anyones feelings'.

Conservative Christian Constitutional principles come above any party and above any political candidate. if a party or candidate caves in, compromises or betrays the principles conservatifes believe in, we don't ''go along for the ride''.

so that is why you have people who are unprincipled attempting to bash, belittle and insult those who stick to righteousness.

the truth is, there is no united front except if it is based in truth- the morality and liberty that is bestowed upon us by God. without that, you have nothing. so i will not support rino candidates who destroy our party by supporting evil and wickedness.

Libertarianism has never "had a chance" because, in part, of the two-party-only mentality and the roadblocks put up by those two parties. Although Republicans seem eager to get Nader some votes...

I will admit, however, part of the problem is due to the LP platform. It does need tweaking. Even with those, it's still a hard sell, because people in general - especially the gullible leftists - have been brainwashed into believing there ARE no solutions unless they come from Washington, D.C. And there are those on the right that look at it in a similar vein. Between Hillary's "it takes a village" and the conservative mantra of "no man is an island", it's no wonder our lives will only be *more* controlled, not less. It's a brave new world.

The general philosophy of libertarianism is so alien, see above, that the average person automatically panics and wonders how they'd ever survive with even the loss of ONE government program, let alone most of them.

...because people in general - especially the gullible leftists - have been brainwashed into believing there ARE no solutions unless they come from Washington, D.C.

That, of course is a gross overstatement of what Democrats believe. The extreme left of the Democratic Party will assert that only a select few intellectuals should call the shots and whether they hail from Harvard, MIT or UC-Berkeley is important and the hell with the Beltway Boobs. Democratic Leadership in the Congress will assert that there is a good cause for government programs and that is true.

And there are those on the right that look at it in a similar vein. Between Hillary's "it takes a village" and the conservative mantra of "no man is an island", it's no wonder our lives will only be *more* controlled, not less. It's a brave new world.

You don't seem to really know what a conservative is. You've pegged Hillary correctly but conservatives are far more independent than you project. "No man is an island is a liberal notion, not conservative.

Just curious but how old are you and if you are running for office how have you managed to get it so confused?

My use of the phrase, "no man is an island", was based on having seen it used by people on the right side of the spectrum, usually in reference to advocating behavior-control laws.

It's also been my observation that - okay, SOME - conservatives look at Americans as unruly children, much in the same way liberals do. The difference is how each side wants to make them conform to their standards. For instance, there's a guy over on Hannity's forums that thinks we can arrest our way back to an Ozzie & Harriet kind of America, and he can't be the only one.

And, for the record: I'm on the knife's edge of being 41 years of age, and my campaign is focused mostly on eminent domain and forfeiture abuse, reforming family services to cut down on frivolous "revenge" charges (usually made by angry ex-spouses), and replacing the tax structure with the national retail sales tax.

What you read here, doesn't make it out on the campaign trail, unless I meet a kindred spirit along the way.

Thanks for your reply. Society requires compromises. Those of us on the left think we have a responsibility to share with our neighbors in need and those on the right think those in need should pick up and work it out. Somewhere in between we manage to get along. We have laws to make life a touch easier. Some behaviors don't make life easier. Society needs rules to postpone chaos. Some of the rules we make are unfair and some are over used and abused. The exceptions are always newsworthy, but I just can't think of any right now.

What you read here, doesn't make it out on the campaign trail, unless I meet a kindred spirit along the way.

Sorry, I don't understand and I realize I'm too tired to think straight.

Another ridiculous criticism, in my view, is about the font I usually use here. It's called "comic sans ms", it isn't in boldface (except for titles, authors, dates, that kind of thing, the same kind one finds in message one of every FR thread), it isn't all caps, and it isn't sized up. I'm simply not interested in anyone's opinion about how it causes eye cancer or high blood pressure or anything else. :')
