FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CONTACT: July 28, 2004
Medea Benjamin (415) 235-6517
Gael Murphy (202) 412-6700

Anti-War Activist Dragged off DNC Floor in Handcuffs

Behind veneer of unity, Democratic leadership works to squelch anti-war
sentiment

Boston As Teresa Heinz Kerry gave her prime-time address at the Democratic
National Convention on Tuesday night, Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK: Women for
Peace attempted to bring an anti-war message onto the convention floor. She
unfurled a pink banner that read “End the Occupation of Iraq” a sentiment
that is shared by the majority of Americans and vast majority of Democrats
and was promptly dragged out of the Fleet Center by the police.

”The Democratic leadership is trying to stifle people’s opinions about the
most important issue facing this nation: the war on Iraq. A huge majority of
the delegates believe the Iraq war was a mistake, and many are convinced
that the U.S. military occupation isn¹t benefiting Americans or Iraqis. But
the Democratic platform doesn’t reflect that sentiment, and it’s been so
difficult for people at the DNC to get that message out,” said Benjamin, who
is a co-founder of CODEPINK as well as the human rights organization Global
Exchange.

Inside the convention, the DNC has banned anything but “officially printed”
banners and signs from the convention floor, and several anti-war delegates
from the Kucinich campaign have been told to take off scarves that say
”delegate for peace.” Outside the convention, those who oppose the
Democratic Party position on Iraq are relegated to a “protest pen”, which is
actually a cage surrounded by fencing and barbed wire. On Saturday, CODEPINK
objected to the protest pen by having some of its activists dress as pink
statues of liberty with tape over their mouths.

“We are supposed to have free speech all over the United States, not just
inside a pen that looks like a Guantanamo Bay detention camp,” Benjamin
said.

If you are a veteran convention observer, I am glad you will watch and give us your opinion.

I don't want it to be wishful thinking that I think this is not a very well produced and presented convention and we need more opinions offered.

Newsmakers | Michael Moore, CNN, and a very bad word

By Tirdad Derakhshani

Inquirer Staff Writer

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/entertainment/9258058.htm?1c

Is Michael Moore not a nice man? Could Moore be a boor?

The New York Daily News reports that the portly director of the dissentious anti-Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 was unutterably rude to CNN staffers Monday in Boston after he gave an interview on the Democratic National Convention's main floor for the cable channel's American Morning show.

To be on the floor, you need a coveted, priceless credential - and only a limited number are distributed. CNN gave Moore a floor pass so he could do the interview. Reportedly, after it was over, Moore refused to return it, even using the ultimate insulting word when he addressed a female CNN staffer.

"Oh, my God, I never use that kind of language," Moore tells the Daily News. "It's a complete lie."

He adds that CNN brass sent him an apology for the misunderstanding. But a CNN rep says, "There's no apology... . CNN expects an apology from Mr. Moore to the female staffer he abused."

Me, too. When I was about 10 years old, I listened on the radio. (no TV) I have never missed a convention, but I am really struggling through this one, even with the wine I consume, it's difficult. What has happened to our country?

MSNBC talking to Omarosa (The Apprentice) on the floor.

Her message to Teresa Heinz: "You go girl"

Omarosa tells Chris Jansing that thanks to the show she now has a platform and Chris asks if that means politics. Omarosa says people know she's interested in holding office one day but her main focus now is getting John Kerry in office.

Like most everything else to do with the convention, the event failed to live up to its billing.

MSNBC just showed a clip of Dick Cheney at a campaign event where he's given a basketball jersey. He held it up and said he probably shouldn't put it on because he might look like John Kerry in his picture yesterday.

Chris Jansing just trilled about Caroline Kennedy walking by but then gave a subtle slam to the Kerry ferry crossing today, saying you half expected him to do one of these--and she throwns her arms open ala Leonardo in The Titanic.

LOL

I have watched every convention since 1960 (except 1968 when I was living overseas) and I cannot remember any convention of either party being so disjointed and just plain boring.

Nothing makes any sense. The music doesn't inspire, the speakers are apparently chosen at random, odd comments from private citizens are interspersed with recorded quotes from dead democrats, and the photo-ops are obviously staged and uninspiring. I can only conclude that Bob Shrum is working his magic once again.
