The official DNC transcript of the Al Sharpton speech of about an hour ago does not -- for whatever reason -- make note of the fact that he shouted that it was "UNDER DEMOCRATS!" that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.
The fact of the matter is that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed not because of Democrats, but despite them. From FrontPage Magazine:
It also appears that Sharpton ad-libbed the parts of his speech in which he, speaking for blacks, told the GOP and Bush "OUR VOTES ARE NOT FOR SALE!"
Although the Democrats controlled both houses of the Congress at the time, a much-higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats supported the civil-rights bill. For example, in the House, Republicans voted for civil rights by a margin of 79 percent to 21 percent, 136-35. The Democrats' margin was 153-91 or 63 percent to 37 percent.
Why wouldn't the Democrats want to tell the whole truth about what Sharpton said? America already knows he's a race-baiting snake convicted of defaming the character of a prosecutor accused of raping a girl who wasn't raped and whom the accused had never met. What's a few more historical inaccuracies and divisive, race-based saliva when you've racked up a record like that?
Impromptu Al Ping
That is truth.
I found the quote from LBJ:
"I'll have those n*ggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years." -- Lyndon B. Johnson to two governors on Air Force One according Ronald Kessler's Book, "Inside The White House"
You forgot Al Gore Sr.!
The truth is that the D's should have been able to carry it by themselves.
They couldn't.
They needed R's to come up big to pass it, and they did.
It was R's that got the act passed. The Civil Rights Act would have died if what the D's say about the R's and how we are all bigots were actually true.
That's the truth.
According to the figures that you posted, it would appear also that nearly three times as many Democrats as Republicans voted NO to civil rights as well. You're right in some respects, but for Sharpton to insinuate as he did that Republicans were against civil rights is disingenuous at best and a boldfaced lie at worst. Your post didn't add anything, but it just pointed out a different inference from the statistic.
Nowhere in your post was an example of a specific Republican lie on the subject, so I would calm down about it.
BAHAHAHAHAHA...not for sale. That's rich. I guess the Rev Al never heard of "walking around money".
