Van Halen ("political moment in the show")
Special to the Post-Dispatch ^ | 07/29/2004 | DANIEL DURCHHOLZ

There was one brief and fairly subtle political moment in the show, though it was easy to miss. During "Right Now," the video screen showed photos of George Bush under the message "Right now ... nothing is more expensive than regret." Unlike the reported reaction at Linda Ronstadt's controversial Las Vegas show, the aisles were not clogged with angry patrons storming the exits.

I don't understand -- is this pro Bush or hate Bush?

One could take that either way, "nothing more expensive than regret" could apply to not acting and regretting it later on.

Sammy Hagar has made max contributions to Bush and other Republicans.

That's how I read it, too - the cost in terms of life and cash are high right now, however not taking decisive action against the pond scum of the earth would be even more costly. It's a matter of when and how much you decide to pay.

Yeah, I remember seeing that here, it was a thread about famous contributors to Bush and/or Republicans. And Sammy Hagar was included.

As far as the picture and caption during the concert, it could be read either pro or anti-Bush.

Sammy Hagar is known to be a rather rightwing Republican. Further, despite his known problems, Eddie Van Halen is purported to be a very pro-life catholic.

Though I am not a particular fan of post-DLR Van Halen, I will say this lineup is not your typical leftist rock and roll band.

It's probably smart for an entertainer to make a political statement in such subtle, even ambiguous terms...That way you don't alienate half your audience. Everyone has their own interpretation!

Van Halen has been a mediocre talent from day 1--a garage guitarist on steroids playing three chords and cliched riffs with abandon.

Geez,

I always considered Eddie Van A good composer and writer, solid player (enough to keep a 3-piece full), and an imaginative non-traditionalist guitar mechanic. His tired licks are flawlessly executed and musically sound. Saw him jamming with the SNL band once...did an outstanding job improvising on some tunes...

He's got a highly developed, unique thang, I think!

Eddie's ok...mechanical, but ok...he's no Al DiMeola though.

I remember in 1982 going to a Hagar concert and him speaking in between the first two songs about how great it was that Reagan was President. He talked about how great it was to be proud about America again.

Liberal he's not.

Or maybe cashing on their fans' disposable income, courtesy of the Bush Administration.

It bugged me to hear VH in the background at the 'rat show, but I resist the impulse to write off another of my favorites.

I wish more of them would heed Laura's advice (Shut up & sing!)

I'll give VH a pass on this.

Not sure about Eddie and Alex, but I know Sammy backed Bush.
