MILWAUKEE – Thousands of supporters of John Kerry cheered the Democratic presidential candidate in a riverside park Monday night, overcoming a heckling pro-Bush contingent with the chant ``three more months.’’

The pro-Bush hecklers chanted ``four more years.’’

``They want four more years of hell,’’ quipped Theresa Heinz Kerry during her speech, to a roar from the Dem audience. Then she led them in a chant of ``three more months.’’

As to his wife’s quip, Kerry said: ``She speaks her mind, and she speaks the truth. And she’s quick on her feet.’’

You know, I only saw a brief clip, but I didn't see the people attending roaring their approval of her comment by any means. And when she started chanting "three more months," everyone just seemed kind of puzzled. I wonder what other people who saw the tape thought... maybe I didn't see enough of it? Because the media would never slant the coverage, right?

``They want four more years of hell,’’ quipped Theresa Heinz Kerry...

After that quip, The Bush supporters should have started chanting, "SHOVE IT!" to Theresa.

"Four years of hell"?

But I thought teRAYzzza was blissfully Republican until just two years ago, when the satanic GOP decided to question the patriotism of Max "Butterfingers" Cleland?

I can't believe she would lie about this . . .

She lies to reporters -- and that's on the record.

Max Cleland is the ONLY person responsible for his injuries. He did NOT check his equipment; he did not secure a live grenade, and left it attached to his vest. When it dislodged from its attach-point, Max was injured by a blast from his own weapon.

Do I feel sorry for this man. YES! Is he a "WAR HERO"? NO!

A Kerry supporter attempted to raise a pro-Kerry sign in the midst of about 100 Bush supporters on a bridge to the south of the park. Immediately following that, a Kerry supporter attempted to knock a Bush-Cheney campaign sign into the water.

Who is desperate? The article says that the Bush HECKLER'S are desperate? What a joke.

So why did you leave out the part about the scuffle??

Kerry also acknowledged the hecklers at one point, calling them "goons." And Kerry supporters once again chanted ``three more months.’’ Answered Kerry: ``Sounds good to me.’’

When Mrs. Kerry was speaking a scuffle occurred. A Kerry supporter attempted to raise a pro-Kerry sign in the midst of about 100 Bush supporters on a bridge to the south of the park. Immediately following that, a Kerry supporter attempted to knock a Bush-Cheney campaign sign into the water. Police on horseback broke up the scuffle. The Milwaukee Police Department declined to comment on if any arrests were made.

Kerry and his wife came to Milwaukee from Muskegon, Mich. on a new high-speed ferry for the early evening rally at Pere Marquette Park in downtown Milwaukee. On Tuesday, they’re scheduled to be in Beloit.

John Nusbaum, a Vietnam vet from the Green Bay area, introduced Mrs. Kerry, and called himself a ``third-generation Republican … (who) voted three times for man named Bush.’’ He said Kerry was a man of ``integrity.’’ Nusbaum is a former De Pere mayor.

Kerry knocked Bush for trying to ``stonewall’’ the 9-11 commission. ``We need leadership … that makes us safe,’’ he said.

And one of Kerry’s biggest reactions came when he spoke to the need for energy independence.

``No young American in uniform should ever be held hostage to our dependence on foreign oil in the Middle East,’’ Kerry said. ``I want American energy to come from America’s ingenuity and creativity, not from the Saudi royal family.’’

U.S. Sens. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold were in attendance. Kerry praised them as ``independent-thinking’’ politicians who have fought against the influence of money in Washington, D.C. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett also was acknowledged by Kerry.

``Wisconsin is at the center of the election this year. If we win the state, we will win the election,’’ Kohl said.

Audience reaction was markedly positive for Kerry.

“I thought it was inspiring and motivating. The energy of the crowd just added to it,” said Dave Winslow, 57 of Madison.

Mike Bertrand, 56, also of Madison, said he was also pleased with Kerry’s speech and commented on the pro-Bush protesters saying, “I think they’re desperate. I think they sense (the election) is slipping away.”

Bertrand’s daughters also attended. Lydia Bertrand, 27, was most moved while joining the crowd shouting back at the pro-Bush hecklers. Eve Bertrand, 22, said she thought the pro-Bush hecklers “were very rude and inappropriate.” Both were pleased with the music played by rock musician Dave Grohl of the "Foo Fighters" before Kerry spoke.

For Inez Mosley, 57 of Glendale, Kerry’s message on creating new jobs impressed her the most, but thought that overall Kerry’s speech was “very informative. He talked about a lot of things of concern to the public.

Yes. I saw it this morning and the crowd did not roar back with her, "3 more months" she was pretty much saying it alone.

Let me say from the outset that I am not a Cleland fan, however I do believe in telling the whole story:

December 9, 2003

U.S. Senator Zell Miller, D-GA

Committee Statement on the Nomination of Max Cleland to the Board of the Export-Import Bank of the United States

Mr. Chairman, Members of the Committee:

In all of my years in politics, I know of no other person who has embodied leadership, service and sacrifice more than Max Cleland.

On and off the battlefield Max’s story should serve as a continual inspiration to us all.

When his nation called in 1966, Max Cleland didn’t hesitate. He answered the call to arms and went to battle. His answer was, ‘Count me in.’

He volunteered for service, and he volunteered for Vietnam when he could have stayed stateside and been safe and sound.

During his service in uniform, Max received the Silver Star Medal, one of the highest awards that can be given for gallantry in action. Listen to this citation:

“Captain Cleland distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 4 April 1968 … during an enemy attack near Khe Sanh.

“When the battalion command post came under a heavy enemy rocket and mortar attack, Captain Cleland, disregarding his own safety, exposed himself to the rocket barrage as he left his covered position to administer first aid to his wounded comrades. He then assisted in moving the injured personnel to covered positions.

“Continuing to expose himself, Captain Cleland organized his men into a work party to repair the battalion communications equipment, which had been damaged by enemy fire.

“His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.”

Those are not my words. That’s Uncle Sam talking.

And four days after that incident that earned him the Silver Star came the grenade explosion that so grievously wounded him. His would be a great story if you stopped there. But Max Cleland didn’t stop there.

He continued to lead by courageously overcoming this tragedy and serving in the Georgia state Senate. And he followed that up by distinguished tours of duty as head of the Veterans Administration and as an esteemed member of this body.

I have known and respected and loved Max Cleland for over 30 years. His is an American story; one of inspiration for us all. Mr. Chairman, I have no doubt that the Export-Import Bank and the nation will benefit by his appointment and service on this board.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

Senator Miller submitted the above remarks into the official record of former Sen. Max Cleland’s nomination hearing to join the Board of the Export-Import Bank.

"His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army".”

Kudos’ for Mr. Cleland's for his heroic actions during this instance. I stand corrected, and for that reason I offer my apology. However, his injuries were not acquired during any heroic actions, and I stand by my initial statement that his injuries were not the result of any heroic actions on his part, but by an unfortunate accident that appears (maybe) to have possibly been averted (if only he had followed sound military guidelines).

It was his legislative record that was attacked. It seems dims consider one's record to be the same as patriotism.

Listening to kerry, or Mr. Cleland, one would NEVER know that Mr. Cleland didn't get his injuries in an Audey Murphy style action.

LLS.

Absolutely right! I bet if one conducted a nationwide survey, less than 1% would know the true story behind his injuries.
