Bush leads Kerry in UNF poll
By First Coast News Staff
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A University of North Florida poll shows President George W. Bush leading Senator John Kerry in the presidential race in Duval County.
54 percent of voters surveyed said they would vote for the Bush/Cheney ticket if the election were held today. 37 percent said they would vote for the Democratic ticket of Kerry/Edwards. Only 2 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for Ralph Nader, while 7 percent said they would vote for someone else and were undecided.
The poll also asked voters about city government issues, including the upcoming Super Bowl.
When asked if they approved of the job Mayor John Peyton is doing, 67 percent approved and 10 percent disapproved.
The July poll was conducted by Dr. Matthew Corrigan of the Public Opinion Research Laboratory. The research laboratory is part of the Southern politics project at UNF. The Southern politics project tracks demographic trends in Southern politics, especially racial, cultural and economic issues.

Good find!
I did some quick number crunching, and it looks like the results about mirror the 2000 results.
Duval County only?
Is Duval County a predominantly GOP or Dem district?
Excluding 3rd Parties, Bush carried Duval County in 2000 by 58.5% to 41.5% to Gore.
Did the poll also say that 32% of area Democrats still are confused by punch cards?
Not bad, since Bush's campaign hasn't really gotten started yet.
It is 8 tenths of a percent better of the two party vote than in 2000. OF course, that assumes the undecided breaks in the same proportion.
This is good, too. Peyton is a young conservative mayor who beat a race-baiting black Democrat sheriff and some moderate Republicans to win in 2003.
I think a good number of the "undecided" simply won't vote... especially if it turns into a very negative campaign.
I sure hope Duval County, FL isn't as corrupt as Duval County, TX
Isn't Jacksonville in Duval County?
Aren't there lots of absentee ballots that come from military people that account for votes in Duval?
If so, has that been factored into any poll?
I doubt it!
I think Jacksonville is Duval County and vice versa.
"The City of Jacksonville and Duval County merged in 1968, creating a single entity governing all of Duval County with the exception of the beach communities (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach) and Baldwin. This greatly simplifies the legislative process and ensures Jacksonville's pro-business environment for the long-term."
Regarding the political leanings of the area, Duval County is very conservative, with the exception of the inner city area - Corrine Brown's district. The majority of the rest of the county is in Ander Crenshaw's district (also my district).
Other tidbits: As noted earlier, John Peyton, the mayor, is a young, conservative Republican, and the Jax newspaper, The Florida Times-Union, is, without doubt, the best newspaper in Florida, and is very conservative editorially. I subscribe and devour it regularly every morning.
The results of this poll do not surprise me, most of north Florida is quite conservative (my county voted Bush almost 2-to-1 in 2000), it's the central (Orlando and I-4 corridor) and southeast (Palm Beach and Miami-Dade) that you need to worry about...
Duval County, which includes/is coterminous with JAX, is a huge county, and includes part of the central area. North Central Florida is heavily GOP. Except, of course, for my county - Alachua County, home of the University of Florida, Gainesville.
That's okay, we're not going down without a fight here. But it's always a pleasure to go to events in JAX and in neighboring counties to get a thumbs-up (instead of spitting and shouting, and the bizarre event where somebody driving past screamed insults and hurled pennies at one of our folks who was standing on a street corner with a Bush sign).
Even that is probably about as conservative as any mostly Black county in the country.
hehe! I doubt it is .....Was it Duval County where Baines did the dirty work to win his Senate election ?
Sure was. Ballot box 13!
Whut I thought. All those signatures signed by the same hand, same handwriting, etc. .....
In alphabetical order!
Not only that but that icon of many Americans, Harry S. Truman, via Abe Fortas, helped him steal that election.
Despite early returns, are these folks being taught how to knock out chads? That's what I wanna know...
"Did the poll also say that 32% of area Democrats still are confused by punch cards?"
Remember, Democrats were only confused about the ballot in counties that were majority Democrat. The recount was to be limited to these counties. No need to recount in Republican counties.
The DNC held a workshop at the convention, "How to Vote in Florida: Scads of Chads are Bad for Bush."
It's not the Northern Floridians who are the idiots, it's those dimwits from the Southeastern shore who don't appear to have a clue...MUD
I demand a recount!
