Wille, check my post 20. I think it tails in well with what you said in your post.

Why not? AMF owned Harley for a while.

Marketing people tend to believe that hyping an "established" brand name is all that is necessary to sell cheap junk to the dumbed-down mass market

Yup, At several times in my career, I've worked with some of these types. They try to sell their clients, whether internal or external, on the idea that they can "unlock the value of a brand" without giving much rational thought to either the product itself or the consumer who'd buy it. As you well know, such people are the driving force behind ads and junk mail.

It is time for them to be more than a HD copy.

There's a restored 1947 Indian on display at a beer pub in my town. The owner bought it in Bombay India.

Once again, the world is made safe for V-twinkie powered, slow, expensive bikes for dentists and their fat wives!

It gave you a fashionable black racing stripe up your back.

That conveniently matched its 2-stroke oil.

Maybe the new "owners" will do the right thing and call them "MOTOCYCLES" like the original wigwam in Springfield did. The crate-motor bolt-up skirted fendered HD clones never appealed to me. Pop an updated Vincent Rapide or Shadow motor in a replica 46-53 Chief/Roadmaster frame and I'll buy... but not something with an aftermarket HD motor....not that I have anything against Harleys (I do have one).

Hell, just update the '46 Chief so it can pass DOT regs and I'll be there tomorrow. I did see three REAL Indians on the road in CT last weekend. Out on a nice rural stretch of Rte 6, one guy was really giving what looked like a '46 the stick being chased by a NICE Knuck....awesome.

A two-stroke Harley? Am I misunderstanding you?

I owned one once. Bought it at the Houston Auto Auction and the former title holder was Carlos Regalos from Nogales TX.

It was my Kalamazoo Cadillac, all done up in crushed velvet with rose colored tinted windows and extra large bumpers fore and aft.

Simply the best Gulf Coast fishing car one could have.

Well, this page references a four-stroke HD SS-350, but I could swear the manual called for two-stroke oil. 'Course, this was over 20 years ago.

...and If I won the lottery, that Series D and a 101 Scout would sit next to this in the garage (I love that it's not a trailer queen too)...we can all dream, can't we?

GM must be run by a bunch of ex-KMart executives now.

Sadly, the Baby Boomers now in charge of automotive Marketing don't even understand their own generation well enough to exploit it at the peak of the 'Boomers buying power. All they have to do is duplicate the CLASSIC cars of the '50s and '60s, staying as visually identical to the originals as is possible. Of course, the '04 version of a '64 Mustang (for instance) would still have all the modern automotive technology (under the hood) that was not available back then. (Fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, AM-FM stereo CD sound system, etc. etc. -- whatever technological improvements and conveniences that make today's cars BETTER than the classics, but don't affect "the look" that Boomers nostalgicly crave.

Any of the classic "muscle cars" would also be an instant success if given the same treatment. Boomers loved and admired 'em, but many were simply too young to afford them. (And there's no doubt that those who DID own one back then would LOVE to have a modern version of their first car!)

Heck, the Big Three would think they struck the Mother Lode if they did something like that!
Stupid marketing sissies are too dumb to go for it.
