EVIL JOEL WHINES: 'I WAS A GOOD DAD' (sadist killed illegally adopted child)

After 17 years in prison, sadistic child killer Joel Steinberg insists he was not to blame for the death of his illegally adopted daughter Lisa — and claims he was a worthy parent.

"I was a good father," Steinberg said in an interview with New York magazine. "Of course, I'm sorry my daughter's dead. But the medical reports showed no 'present' or 'historical' fractures or wounds. That means no history of abuse. Got it?"

"What about the people at school, her friends on West 10th Street?" he asked John Lombardi, the writer who scored the interview.

"How come nobody saw nothin'?" Steinberg said.

The interview will appear in next week's issue.

Steinberg, 63, claims that had he struck the 6-year-old — whose body pathologists said bore a "map of pain" — "the bruise would have been bigger than her head."

Steinberg did, however, admit to pushing Lisa, "with the soft pad, you know, on your palm?"

Steinberg was convicted in 1989 of manslaughter in Lisa's death, which occurred on Nov. 2, 1987 after the ex-lawyer pummeled her in a squalid Greenwich Village apartment where they lived with his brutalized lover Hedda Nussbaum, and another illegally adopted child, 17-month-old Travis Smiegel.

Steinberg was released from prison last month and was sent to the Fortune Society, a Harlem halfway house, where he is receiving counseling.

The unrepentant Steinberg also points a finger at nearly every lawyer involved in the case — the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, former O.J. Simpson lawyer Barry Scheck — who represented Nussbaum — and his own lawyer, Ira London.

Ten years ago, Hedda Nussbaum became a household name. Her face, shattered and scarred after years of physical abuse by her live-in partner, Joel Steinberg, was splashed across newspaper and magazine covers when Steinberg beat the couple's 6 year old adopted daughter Lisa to death.

Today, she is able to tell her own story of domestic violence, to talk about the beatings she endured, in the hope that it will shed light on this despicable crime.

Many people were shocked to find that this problem could occur in a household like this one: educated, affluent people, she a book editor for a major publishing company and he a successful lawyer. Her story illustrates that domestic violence can and does happen in any kind of home.

These days, Ms. Nussbaum co-facilitates a regular domestic violence support group. She has participated in a massive e-mail campaign and also got thousands of petition signatures to discourage the New York State authorities from paroling Joel Steinberg, who to this day, refuses to accept responsibility for the death of Lisa and the violence towards Hedda.

The Parole Board turned down Joel Steinberg's request.

I have actually met Hedda Nussbaum, sat down and had a long talk with her.

She is a shallow, empty headed narcissist, who (in my opinion) was also criminally responsible with that unrepentent lawyer monster (and fellow cocaine addict) Steinberg. What passes for "law" in New York punishes only the males by and large, so she walked.

The democrat party is firmly in the hands of the trial lawyer industry and, in fact, HAS ALREADY been nominating these white collar sociopaths: Kerry, Edwards, Bill Clinton, and (in 2008) Hillary Clinton.

I find nothing to fundamentally distinguish Joel Steinberg's utterly narcissistic, grandiose, and exploitative world view from that of any of the power-mad lawyer-candidates I just mentioned.

Liz is dead on correct. These support groups in NY of course will accept private money, but almost always take public money (your money) as a major source of funding.
