Bush: Raise (Immigration) Limit for Mexico
The Washington Times ^ | 08-07-2004 | Bill Sammon

Posted on 08/07/2004 2:27:23 PM PDT by NewRomeTacitus

President Bush yesterday called on Congress to increase the number of Mexican immigrants allowed into the United States.

"I support raising the quotas on certain population groups, like the Mexican nationals, on who can become a citizen. In order to solve the logjam for citizenship, Congress has got to raise the quotas."

Having long sought to grant legal status to illegal aliens from Mexico, the president said yesterday that the only way to enact his plan is to allocate more legal-immigration slots to Mexicans.

"The issue there is whether or not people automatically get to step in the front of the line when it comes to citizenship," he said. "I don't think they should. I think those who have been waiting in line to be a citizen ought to be allowed to keep that priority in line."

Mr. Bush did not explain how non-Mexican applicants for U.S. residency would keep their place in line if the quota for Mexican immigrants is enlarged. Nor did he quantify his proposed enlargement for Mexicans, who already far outnumber immigrants from every other nation.

The president's plan to relax immigration rules, which is unpopular among many conservatives, entails granting legal status to millions of Mexicans who break the law to enter the United States. Mr. Bush shuns the term "amnesty," preferring to call it the matching of "willing workers with willing employers."

"People ought to be allowed to be here legally to work. That's what I believe. This will help bring people out of the shadows of our society. This will help, kind of, legalize a system that takes place every day, without employers...or employees feeling like they're going to be arrested, subjected to fines," he added.

I demand that we count the illegals as part of Mexico's allocation. 11 Million illegals here, and out government does little about it. Sickening.

There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Our President is determined to put his pro-Mexican/illegal employer agenda above the wishes of the vast majority of citizens and seems to see no problem with that. What else can he say to alienate consevatives before the election?

Because the previous poster didn't take the time to neatly edit the article to include all the President's comments so they may be seen without going to the link, that's why.

We need more balanced immigration --- where the individual immigrant is judged for what they can do for this country instead of preference for just one country which doesn't send us the most literate, able to learn and assimilate type of immigrant overall. Overall the group from Mexico is far too dependent on government programs --- and we're already sending billions of dollars to prop up the border regions.

I thought the people of Mexico pretty much determine what
the immigration allowance will be.

Why am I not surprised some would like this issue limited to one thread?

I don't know what Fox has on Senior Bush, but this is simply unacceptable as far as I am concerned! Perhaps we can get Bush to run for President of Mexico and leave us the hell alone.

Chalk another win up to conservatives???

%#$^%! ^**&% @#$!@@

Vicente Fox has complete say on our immigration policies right now for some reason. The Mexican elite need even higher levels of people leaving or their corrupt system is in danger of toppling. Bush isn't doing this to help Americans or this country in any way at all, he's doing this to keep the elite 10% of Mexico happy and in power so they can continue to raid that country of it's wealth --- which they believe is theirs exclusively.

If Bush is saying this now, imagine after he's reelected! When he no longer has to worry about votes, he will go hog wild and hand over this country to Mexico even more!

This is the final straw. I cannot vote for this man.

This was in Mexico's news yesterday. It looks like more will be coming over the border and I am sure they read this as amnesty. %#^%&* hispandering politicians.

You just described policy as it was before Ted and Co. screwed it up in 1965. Every other country's standards are similar to our pre-'65 guidelines. Good thing we're not at war or anything like that.

I've been reading the other threads; you made some excellent points today. I marveled at how those "advocates" bloviated about punishing the president who allowed so many of their illegal clients to invade without fear of deportation.

The excerpt doesn't include this sentence.

"The president's remarks came as his campaign began airing a Spanish-language TV ad in New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Florida, where Hispanic voters are considered a crucial component of his re-election strategy."

I suspect he will not really try to change immigration policies. I don't like to hear him play politics like this, but what can he do when the DemoRats make promises they can't keep?

At least one can't accuse the administrtion of being inconsistent. This is why I may not bother to go to the polls in November.

Compared to Kerry who has publicly advocated a PURE amnesty program on his pre-sanitized web site?

Legal limits are far different from kerry's reinstating anchor babies and giving a solid amnesty program

Illegal immigration is an Employment problem!

Implement asset forfeiture laws similar to drug cases for Anyone hiring an illegal alien and watch the problem disappear overnight.

Hire an illegal domestic and lose your house.
Hire an illegal construction crew and lose your business
Hire an illegal janitor and lose your corporate charter and all corporate assets.

If there is no work, they will not come!

Yet there is an irony --- Silvestre Reyes only made it to Congress, elected from a very heavily hispanic region because he was seen as someone strong on controlling the border. He appeared then to be someone unafraid of the Mexican government which condemned him strongly for Operation Blockade and Operation Hold-the-Line. The hispanics on the USA side admired him very much for that --- there isn't really any evidence that Americans of Spanish descent want open borders with Mexico --- in fact I think it's more the opposite. Other than the Aztlan types who are more recent arrivals who have kept their ties with Mexico, I can't see many who want this.
