Kerry/Kranish Book Controversy - Check the ISBN's (Drudge was right)
myself

Posted on 08/08/2004 7:58:45 PM PDT by GOPcapitalist

Here's something more on the Boston Globe story claiming that its reporter Kranish was not connected to the Kerry/Edwards official campaign bio:

BOTH THE OLD KRANISH COVER AND THE NEW KERRY/EDWARDS COVER HAVE THE EXACT SAME ISBN NUMBER ACCORDING TO THE PUBLISHER, AMAZON, AND BARNES AND NOBLE. If these sites are accurate, the books are connected as revisions!

ISBN's are unique identification numbers given to every book that comes out for identification purposes. No two different books have the same ISBN. Only books that are identical do. If the numbers are accurate this should mean that, just as the New York Daily News published, the new Kerry/Edwards book is a revised substitute for the Kranish one. In other words, Drudge and all the others who originally reported on Kranish's tie to the project were right.

Compare them and you will see they are one and the same:

ISBN FOR KRANISH COVER ACCORDING TO BARNES AND NOBLE: 1586483145

ISBN FOR KRANISH COVER ACCORDING TO PUBLISHER SITE CACHE: 1-58648-314-5

ISBN FOR REVISED KERRY EDWARDS COVER ACCORDING TO PUBLISHER SITE RIGHT NOW: 1-58648-314-5

ISBN FOR REVISED KERRY EDWARDS COVER ACCORDING TO AMAZON: 1586483145

They haven't gone to press yet. The "revised" cover that doesn't mention Kranish is due out in September I think. Looks like Kerry had them pull the plug, so to speak, on Kranish's involvement when it turned out he could be more useful running fabricated attacks on the swift boat ads in his newspaper.

Beats the heck out of waiting for the "REAL" journalists to do their jobs. This and the Swift Vets should be headliners. Instead, all we hear is Kerry repeating that 'the economy hasn't turn the corner - it's going 'rounf in circles.'

"I was in Vietnam!"

Except for Christmas 1968, when I crossed the frozen Mekong to attack the Hessians who were still sleeping off their drunken Christmas Eve revels. Then I was in Cambodia. But I hurried back to Vietnam the next day, in spite of my serious rice wounds, wondering all the while, "why don't they court martial me?"

This book credits thing is hilarious. The Globe has been Kerry's/Kennedy's pr firm for years, and this is hard evidence of the crossing of editorial content with "factual" journalism.

Code of Ethics Ethics > SPJ Code of Ethics Preamble

Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues.

Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society's principles and standards of practice. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Seek Truth and Report It

Journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

Journalists should:

Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate distortion is never permissible.

Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing. Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability.

Always question sources’ motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises.

Make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context. Never distort the content of news photos or video. Image enhancement for technical clarity is always permissible. Label montages and photo illustrations.

Avoid misleading re-enactments or staged news events. If re-enactment is necessary to tell a story, label it. Avoid undercover or other surreptitious methods of gathering information except when traditional open methods will not yield information vital to the public. Use of such methods should be explained as part of the story Never plagiarize.

Tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the human experience boldly, even when it is unpopular to do so. Examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others.

Avoid stereotyping by race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, geography, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance or social status.

Support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant.

Give voice to the voiceless; official and unofficial sources of information can be equally valid.

Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.

Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.

Recognize a special obligation to ensure that the public's business is conducted in the open and that government records are open to inspection. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Minimize Harm

Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect.

Journalists should:

Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.

Be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy or grief.

Recognize that gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance.

Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyone’s privacy.

Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity. Be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects or victims of sex crimes.

Be judicious about naming criminal suspects before the formal filing of charges.

Balance a criminal suspect’s fair trial rights with the public’s right to be informed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act Independently

Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.

Journalists should:

Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.

Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.

Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity. Disclose unavoidable conflicts.

Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.

Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage. Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Be Accountable

Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other.

Journalists should:

Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.

Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.

Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.

Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.

Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The SPJ Code of Ethics is voluntarily embraced by thousands of writers, editors and other news professionals. The present version of the code was adopted by the 1996 SPJ National Convention, after months of study and debate among the Society's members.

Good investigation work.

Lesson learned-

Liberals cannot be trusted. Journalists cannot be trusted.

::sigh::

Maybe the world never existed where the media had a conscience but I mourn the loss of ethical journalism nonetheless, even if it existed only in my fantasies.

It's even worse than that. Even when they switched to the new book, the book's publisher PublicAffairs was crediting Michael Kranish with writing the introduction of this new book as well. As proof, Drudge pointed to a Google cache of the web page taken on July 28, 2004. Google has since updated its cache, but the point is this: if the PUBLISHER does not have its information right, then how can Drudge be faulted for getting it wrong? Assuming of course he actually did?

Sadly there are freepers out there who are defending the Globe not because of the facts but because the info came from Drudge. I'm no huge fan of Drudge but I don't despise the guy either. Regardless of what anybody thinks of him though, the Globe, Kranish, and Kerry were at fault on this one.

Anybody here speak Spanish? I'd be interested in knowing what this link says:

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=fq6Dzip9hc&isbn=8408054015&itm=4

It's for Kranish's spanish translation of his Kerry bio, called "Kerry. La alternativa a Bush"

Anybody know what this means?

"George Bush se ha convertido en el presidente de Estados Unidos más polémico del último medio siglo. Ante las trascendentales elecciones norteamericanas de noviembre de 2004 John F. Kerry aparece como la única alternativa para derrotar a Bush. Pero ¿quién es en realidad Kerry? ¿Tiene posibilidades reales de vencer a Bush? Este libro, basado en un trabajo de investigación publicado por los autores en el prestigioso Boston Globe, constituye la biografía más profunda y actual del que puede ser el futuro presidente de Estados Unidos. From Babelfish;

"George Bush has become the more controversial president of the United States of last means century. Before the transcendental North American elections of November of 2004 John F. Kerry it appears like the only alternative to defeat to Bush. But who is in fact Kerry? It has real possibilities to win to Bush? This book, based on a work of investigation published by the authors in the prestigious Boston Globe, constitutes the deepest and present biography del that can be the future president of United States.
