The Mary Ann myth: Kerry falsifies NH woman’s story
Union Leader ^ | 8/10/04

Posted on 08/09/2004 11:38:51 PM PDT by kattracks

NEXT TIME John Kerry accuses President Bush of misleading the American people, remember Mary Ann Knowles.

Knowles is the Hudson woman whose battle with breast cancer Kerry has turned into a campaign anecdote. Here is what Kerry said about Knowles during his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 29:

“What does it mean when Mary Ann Knowles, a woman with breast cancer I met in New Hampshire, had to keep working day after day right through her chemotherapy, no matter how sick she felt, because she was terrified of losing her family’s health insurance? America can do better. And help is on the way.”

What it means is that John Kerry is fibbing. As Union Leader correspondent Scott Brooks reported on Sunday, Mary Ann Knowles did not have to work through her chemotherapy for fear of losing her health insurance. Employed by Elderhostel, the Boston-based non-profit travel organization for people 55 and older, Mary Ann had 26 weeks of paid disability at her disposal. More was available for a long-term illness. She did not have to work through her chemotherapy. She chose to.

Knowles would have lost some income had she taken the disability leave, said her husband, who is unemployed. But she would not have lost her health insurance, as Kerry has repeatedly misstated.

Asked if the Kerry campaign bothered to get the details of Knowles’ personal story, spokeswoman Judy Reardon said Kerry’s use of the words “every day” in describing Knowles story was “a colloquialism.” She went on: “When a woman has a mastectomy and goes through therapy, I don’t need to double-check on her.”

In other words, Kerry knowingly used the words “every day” when he did not mean “every day,” and he used the phrase: “she still has to go to work every day — just to hang on to their health insurance” when she did not have to work every day and was in no danger of losing her health insurance.

In short, he lied. Repeatedly.

With all that has come to light about Kerry’s voting record and his Vietnam service, his misrepresentation of Marry Ann Knowles’ story should surprise few. Kerry cannot even get his own personal history straight, so how can we expect him to correctly relay someone else’s?

You see, Clinton repeatly claimed the very mild early 1990s recession was the "worst economy in the last 50 years." He was elected despite that lie. This along with Clinton not being removed from office after lying in Federal Court testimony, led the Dims to conclude that lying is legit public policy discourse. [Clinton also lied in agreements with Congress on legislation.]

This is maybe the most unforgivable sin of Clinton. He made lying, not embellishing, not putting yourself in the best possible light, not spinning, but out right lying part of public discourse in the US. It has been picked up by other Dims and they think it is the key to winning elections. They do not understand that Clinton one with his charisma despite lying and they do not have the same charisma. Maybe a few more years of not controlling any part of the government will convince the Dims they must return to honesty.

Oh joy, more lies from Kerry. I think it's becoming more and more clear, as we see the lies build up ("seered" memories of a Christmas in Cambodia, now this whopper in his nominating speech) that his activities in Vietnam are more consistent with a person who lies to make himself look better than a "true hero."

THIS is the best the Democrat party could do? Pathetic.

Hell, as one who's been on disability since June 10th due to cancer, I can tell that Kerry's story is pure bunk. Sure, the disability pay is less than my usual wage, but it pays the bills...and I'm in no danger of losing either my insurance or my job.

And I'm happy to report that, barring further complications, I will be able to return to work in early September. : )

Nice idea if it were true---seems to me that about half of the country believes lying is acceptable since they support the "great liars" of our time (Kerry and Clinton)---seems I also read something about it being ok to 'cheat on tests' in our schools of higher education as well, so am afraid "truth" is not what it used to be--

following the al gore 'lie your way into office' campaign strategy.

Which followed the Clinton 'lie your way into office.

Problem for Kerry and Gore is that Clinton coupled that with a practiced ability to ingratiate himself whomever he applied himself to. That is, Clinton pretended to buy into you before asking you to buy into him.

Kerry and Gore simply don't have the charm to carry off the same whoppers that Clinton can.

One nice thing about the sociopathic democrats....learned from their King..Slick Willie
You can pretty much figure out what crimes they are currently involved in thanks to their
constant counter accusations...

Heck they seem to nearly always accuse their rivals of exactly what it is they are currently involved in...often before they are caught doing it ......

Jesus said that Satan was a liar from the first and the 'father of all lies'....this would seem to pretty much indicate where... the democrats are coming from

imo

Kerry tells Kerrytruth. Translated to English - lies. All lies. The lies are the only good things that can be said about him.

I think I'm getting physically sick of his mug and I never listen to him any more. He's not allowed on my TV set. Visually or audibly. He effects me exactly the way X42 did.

Please dear Lord, don't make us endure John Kerry as X44 one day. We just can't take it.

Of course Kerry is not qualified. As Gardner said - the guy is a traitor to his country, and an incompetent coward. And most everyone knows Kerry as a flip-flopping fool. He's a man whose very name is about to be associated in the dictionary with - dishonor.

But when there's a problem every day, as with Clinton, I think it all starts to blend together. It becomes too much. Many people can hold one or two things against a man, for good reason - but not 1000. I think Clinton was well received, only by some, because those some couldn't see 1000 things wrong with the guy, but would have rejected him for just one.

My wife was diagnosed with BrCa in December of 1997. She was a teacher and in the first three years of her illness she missed a total of 3 days of work. She had the Christmas break when she was first diagnosed and recovering from her lumpectomy and the frequent vacations teachers get made it possible for her to not miss work.

The point is that people with cancer who can work, should work. They live longer if they are occupied at something useful. She lived for four years after the metastasis was diagnosed which is above average. She missed very little work until the last two months of her life. Kerry is trying to use a sad situation to capitalize on peoples ignorance. Thats the general game plan of the Democrats since FDR, I guess.

Kerry lied? AGAIN? Is he related to Al Gore? Wasn't this about the time during the 2000 campaign when Gore's penchant for mendacity came to America's attention? Isn't it time for American to wake up to the fact that Kerry's reckless disregard for the truth makes Gore look like George Washington by comparison?

Kerry lying is not the important issue (even if it is important to me). His campaign people don't have the skills. If someone did not actually get this story from Mary Ann first, to use and then arrange a meeting to make it happen, then they are stupid, lazy, and not doing their jobs. It shows.

But more importantly, this is being reported. The dam is busting. The Swift Vets story is not going away. There is probably more coming, and it won't be pretty.

This is great news!

When Clinton lied during his first State of the Union about a couple who "were forced into bankruptcy" due to medical bills, no one in the media bothered to check it out, except for one reporter for a British paper. He discovered that the hospital had a large fund to help those unable to pay their bills. The couple chose to use medical as the excuse to get out of a whole bunch of other bills.

Now, Kerry is getting outed by an American newspaper for basically the same lie to the American people. Great news!!

The man is absolutely frightening. And I don't just mean the way he looks. Ha ha.

But he is even more of a liar than Clinton. The prospect of having a man of such bad character as president should scare even loyal Democrats.

I wish Mr Bush would be bold during the convention, and the debates, and just come out and call him on it. Tell America what a liar Kerry is. The media and the elites would explode with rage but it just might resonate with voters.

After retirement, I returned to college and as a grad student I had to teach a course.

I was astounded by the amount of cheating, far far worse than when I was an undergrad. They were looking on other students papers with little regard for being caught.

Their has been a quantum change in morality in America and that is no understatement. Clinton simply proved how pernicious it has become.
