Israelis believe (President) Bush better for them than Kerry: poll

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israeli Jews overwhelmingly want President George W. Bush (news - web sites) to beat his Democrat challenger John Kerry (news - web sites) in the US presidential election on November 2, according to an opinion poll.

A total of 49 percent of people questioned said they preferred Bush, with just 18 percent wanting Kerry to win.

Seven percent believed the two candidates were equally good for Israel, while two percent said they were equally bad for the Jewish state. The rest offered no opinion.

At the same time, 42 percent of those questioned believed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) should avoid supporting Bush, while 33 percent thought he should openly back the incumbent.

Tel Aviv university carried out the poll, questioning a representative range of 577 adult Israelis. The poll had a margin of error of 4.5 percent.

The poll confirmed that a clear majority of Israelis, Jewish and Arab, continue to back Sharon's plan to pull out of the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) -- with 60 percent for, and 34 percent against. The remainder expressed no opinion.

They know that Kerry would roll over and let Israel be blown off the face of the earth if it would appease France, Germany or the Jihadists.

Let's see, 49% + 18% + 7% + 2% = 76%

24% have no opinion on such a crucial issue that directly affects the safety and security of Israel. How embarrassing. They are definitely not Freepers.

I hear most American Jews are Democrats. If they don't support Israel, why should we?

A notable contrast in today's headlines:

"Arab-Americans tilt towards Kerry"--headline, Aug. 11, 2004, Aljazeera.net.

"Israelis believe Bush better for them than Kerry: poll"--headline, Aug. 11, 2004, AFP.

Interesting, considering the left portrays Bush as Adolf Hitler.

Are you not aware that most Jews are very LIBERAL?

Ref. my last post (# 10): Jews are very liberal with the exception of Dr. Laura Schlessinger, that is. How can we transfer this setiment to the Jewish communities of Florida and other battleground states?

My understanding is that those two things aren't mutually exclusive. I spoke with Sen. Lautenberg of NJ, a Jewish Democrat. He supports Israel ideologically, however, he considers domestic issues to be more important. I agree with many of his ideologies, however, my support for Israel supercedes my convictions towards more domestic policies (i.e. gay marriage: I have no problem with gays getting married, but since I'm not gay but am a Jew whose grandparents are Holocaust survivors, I would rather have a candidate who is pro-Israel and anti-gay marriage rather than one who is pro-gay marriage and anti-Israel).

As to why you should support Israel: not supporting it would sort of give into anti-West sentiment, and be a signal that terrorism works. In the demonstrations I have participated, there is one popular rally: "First the Saturday people, then the Sunday people." If you don't buy that argument, then I see no reason for you to support Israel. After all, you probably don't need a homeland to protect you from racial violence since you either aren't a popular target or already have a homeland (speaking of which - that is probably a reason why so many Jews here don't really care about Israel. They have become secure in the U.S. and don't think that they will become targets of violence like their European relatives were even recently, like in France).

Who gives a crap? They're not voting for the President of the United States! Just as I'm sick and tired of all my foreign acquaintances telling me I should vote for Kerry, why should I care when some other nation believes Bush should stay in office?

Bravo!

If we give in to global terrorism, as Kerry and his ilk would be inclined to do, then domestic issues will be at the bottom of the list for things to worry about.

Instead, we would be worrying whether that next truck coming down the street could be full of jihad dynamite.

If only others were as logical as yourself, my friend.

Becuase if that fact becomes well known and somebody who lives here has relatives or friends in that other place , it may influence their vote. Is that Ok ?

Israel is a partner of ours in the War on Terror - and apparently not just giving it lipservice like a few other countries which will remain unnamed. Israel is the only democracy so far in the Middle East (hopefully Iraq joins the club). Israel is a recipient of our aid money - it's nice to know ONE country in the world is not biting us in the ....back.

They are and it's a puzzle to me also.

If Bush had not gone into Iraq to stop the suicide bombings paid for by "Oil-for-Food" money, Israel would have been forced to nuke Baghdad. Bush saved Israel's "tukas". A little gratitude is in order.

i was in Tel Aviv over T'giving last year at a very smart cafe - in the background they had a tv on. what comes on? the news of Pres Bush's surprise appearance in Iraq. the cafe exploded in approval : all got to their feet in a standing ovation. the Israelis understand very well what we did when we took Saddam out of power and they show their gratitude by support for Bush. they should not be confused with their cousins comfortable and complacent over here in the U S of A.

I never do for the following reason. I am an Irish-American-Catholic on one side and a Scottish-American-Protestant on the other side. The complexities of a dual heritage, tempered with the force of an American cultural superiority to seek acceptable compromise, is something I understand.
