THE United States is expected to announce today that it is pulling 100,000 troops out of Europe and Asia, according to a British newspaper report.
The Financial Times said the withdrawals - the largest restructuring of Washington's military presence abroad since World War II - would be announced in a speech by US President George W. Bush.
Citing "people briefed on the plan" in a front-page story datelined London, the newspaper said two-thirds of the reductions would be in Europe, with 70,000 troops - mostly from Germany - being sent back to stateside bases.
"In Asia, the drawdown is expected to include the 3500 soldier brigade from South Korea, recently deployed in Iraq, but will also include scaling down presences in several other countries in the region," it said.
Germany would still host the largest contingent of US troops in Europe, but the pullouts could nevertheless see the departure of the 1st Armoured Division and the 1st Infantry Division, the Financial Times said.
Yes! Been a long time comin'.
Good. About a decade overdue, but a very good thing none the less.
S**t! Euro's will have to up their own defence budgets. Less $'s for the cradle-to-gravel socialist welfare programs. Another reason to hate America.
See ya, krauts.
I ain't heard it yet.
Today is tomorrow.
We'll see.
Yea Buddy! Glory hallelujah, and AMEN!
We are also repositioning troops into several Eastern European ALLIED countries!
LLS
It's about time. Lets put them where they can do some good.
Bush is doin good.
I'd pull every stinkin one of them out of Europe, suspend diplomatic relations with France and move to have France taken off the Security Council.
Amen, Brother!....Stop the porous southern border.
I question the timing. ;)
I thought I heard earlier he would be annoucning this in a speech on Monday?
I'm thrilled!!!
They don't deserve our brave men and women. Let them deal with the terrorists on their own since they hate our presence.
I hope the Dept of Education and NPR aren't far behind.
My friend went to Germany for a month last October to start the paper work to down size our troops over there. He was in Korea in August last year for a month to start their down sizing. He works for the DOD. He couldn't tell me before he went because of his security clearance, but his wife is another story. LOL!
If this is true it's a bad omen.
Something big is comming and the troops may be needed for marshall law!
/< tinfoil hat off >
Its about time.
The Cold War ended over fifteen years ago.
Lets redeploy these troops a little closer to the shooting.
Out of Germany --
Out of Korea --
Much of Germany detests the U.S.
Their economic depression will only get worse without our dollars flowing in. (When the troops leave)
Korea's leftist parties have been in a popular "blame America" phase. OK.
They can face the starving hordes on the other side of the fence.
And someday they may get their wish and a taste of 'economic freedom' under a Chinese overlord.
Will we hear the left applaude this ?
This is simply superb news, if true.
No. The left will say . . . "Well, we have spread ourselves too thin and we have to do this. And they are all going to get sent to Iraq anyway. And if Bush is doing it, something must be wrong with it. We are opposed too this terrible move by this idiot president. Stop Bush now!" . . . or something like that. Just smile and maybe they will go away.
Not to be politically cynical, but announcing a withdrawal from Bosnia at this juncture would highlight still more of Kerry's mountain of inconsistencies ( i.e., his support for a non-UN-endorsed invasion of a country which had not attacked or threatened us).
Agreed. Good move on several accounts.
We have lived for too long in a world where "freedom of speech" has meant "freedom of propaganda against the U.S.". If Germany and South Korea want the U.S. military out of their countries, so be it. With President Bush, words mean something. G. and S.K. are sovereign entities - what they say in their own countries matter. We should not meddle in their affairs. They are obviously more than capable of tending to their own matters? Right? We are not empire builders. Nor are we long-suffering martyrs.
In addition, I suspect we may be preparing for another front in this war, rather than reinforcing our southern border.
A strategic reserve will take time to build - this move would help.
My guess is Iran is the next target if G.W. is elected. They cannot allow them to develop nuclear power.
so where they going?
never mind....i just read the article...
Glory Glory ... My Eyes Have Seen the Coming of THE LORD!
I don't think it will turn out to be a "redeployment."
I think it will manifest itself ultimately as an overall strength reduction.
...it will be against the law.
Under what authority would he do that?
That is at the MINIMUM of a $2 BILLION loss for the EU just in the military salaries alone that would have been spent there - not counting all other monies lost!
hehehehehe
As for the northern border, should be ideal prior to fighting up in the mountains between the Koreas.
US Constitution:
IV
Section. 4.
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.
He ought not to be telling his wife that stuff, then.
Posse Comitatus?
Is this atory true?
Is there any truth to this story? Does anyone know?
I'm game to screw the Euros., but my concern is future recruitment. Certainly seeing the world is part of the enticement, it will be harder to get the oversees assignment now. Will recruitment suffer?
Fox News reported it earlier. It's true, expect an announcement Monday in a speech by G.W.
All I know is it's being reported - I can't judge its veracity.
Dennis . President Bush needs the approval of the Senate if my understanding of the Constitution is accurate .
Make way for the European Anti-Christ and the Kings of the East! Somethings going to happen alright, but we're not the orchestrators of GOD's Will. Chess anyone? Endgame!!!!
Praise God!
