Kerry and the Three Purple Hearts
self | August 14, 2004 | DiamondDon

Posted on 08/14/2004 12:48:15 PM PDT by DiamondDon1

Kerry received three purple hearts and therefore, upon his request, was allowed to leave the combat area of Vietnam. I understand that the Navy's policy of letting those leave the combat area after getting three purple hearts was rarely used. Does anyone in this vast knowledge of military history and facts know how many others (besides Kerry):

1. Left the combat zone after receiving three purple hearts?

2. Got three purple hearts in the Navy during Vietnam?

I think this could be a most excellent point of discussion...

"Left the combat zone?" I think you mean "desserted in the face of the enemy." Gigilo John, in effect, shot himself in the foot and bugged out, leaving his unit to face the enemy that he was too cowardly to confront.

I like the "what did he know and when did he know it" questions here. How did Traitor John KNOW that he needed 3 PHs and what was his source for this information? The suggestion that his boss told him that to get rid on him is intuitively satisfying but suggests that he 1st got the PHs and then learned about the loophole. My view is that he knew about the loophole, fabricated the PHs and bugged out.

Edwards is lying, of course, when he alleges Johnny "shed blood" in Nam. In fact, I can get more and worse wounds working in the garage over the weekend that Hanoi John got in his whole 4 weeks in Nam.

But then all Liar John need do is release his military records. If he does, we won't believe he is lying, we'll know.

I don't have any current info for you. My Dad was wounded three times during WWII. After his last battlefield wound, he was transfered out of the frontline infantry and into the topographical unit where they made detailed maps for the
troops advancement. My Dad was a real good photographer and sketch artist. Try going to Google and searching their directory using key words.

one of our Representatives that question and he didn't have the faintest idea. He is a VietNam vet and ex-POW.

How many veterans in US history recieved 3 Purple Hearts and shed less blood than John "WarSissy" Kerry?

sKerry will die an unnatural death in November. He is hell-bent for self destruction. God is a GREAT Equalizer...we (America) can only be strong as long as our leaders are strong.

sKerry is not even in the running. He may be a media darling, but I trust John and Jane Q. American to separate the wheat from the chaff.

"You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can fool all of the people all of the time." Can't remember who said it, but it works for ME!

When the going gets tough, we have to pray.

There is some information out about this issue that goes along the line that his CO basically ordered him to leave and quite possibility even advised him of this policy before hand due to the fact he was a hazard to his men and others in the group.

I am sure FReepers have this info somewhere.

Let's pray but your premise is flawed. God allowed Bill Clinton to be elected President twice. God apparently allows bad leaders to assume power and still uses them for his ends. It's strange stuff.

If we know no good, we cannot know evil.

We have free agency, and that means HE will not interfere. We have Bush. We had Clinton, who sold us out to China and other anti-American countries. So now, it is up to us to make sure that we elect HONEST men to lead this country, and to prevent another 9/11 with our choices.

Had it not been for Clinton, that awful day would never have taken place. He was asleep at the wheel, and that is unforgiveable.

You're singing to the choir: I lost a brother-in-law and four friends there. I also saw what the war did to those who came home in disgrace, thanks to Hanoi Jane and John.

sKerry's behavior at this point needs to be spread all over the public's view of him, and he needs to be sent to the nearest mental facility.

He's a Kennedy wannabe, and he will be until he dies.

I am proud of ALL of our VN Vets. I was working for Greyhound at the time, and I had no problem when I sold round trip tickets to enlistees.

What hurt was the one-way tickets and the "last" breakfasts I had to serve. It was all I could do to smile at all the fine young men....

A few more non cambodian questions
1- why did he enlist? I don't think the obvious answer is correct
2- why did he leave?
3 purple hearts doesn't get you an honorable discharge. After 4 months- I believe he was asked to leave by his commanding officers because he was a menace to himself and others. It is the only answer that makes any sense.

This link will take you to the story of Elliot Williams of Darlington, SC. This man makes Kerry, even if he really earned his medals, look like a pathetic excuse for a hero.
Elliot Williams won 3 purple hearts, 3 bronze stars, 2 silver stars, the Navy cross, the congressional medal of honor. I lived within a few miles of this man until his death a few years ago and I never once heard of him touting his record to anyone. If a war record qualifies one for the presidency, Elliot Williams should have been the king of the entire world.

We had a Hospitalman 3rd Class aboard our ship who received 3 Purple Heart citations for service in Vietnam.

As memory serves, he served as a medic/corpsman with Fleet Marine Force (FMF). Shot once, stepped on a punji stick, shrapnel wound for the third.

The Navy transferred him to our ship (a Destroyer Tender). As a Tender, we set up shop in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Yokosuka, Japan, and Subic Bay, PI. The fleet ships came to us for repairs/tender availabilities and then went back to Yankee Station. (Oh, the sea-stories I could tell ya...) I made three of these WESTPAC tours, each a 6 month tour, and this HM3 came aboard prior to my last cruise.

--a Vietmam Era Vet and damned proud of it.

I am not doubting the fact that there are true American heroes that received 3 purple hearts, but what I am trying to find out is how many got 3 purple hearts and got their ticket out of country.

So far, sadly no info...

Diamond Don, I don't quite understand your question. Do you want to know the total number of PH recipients because as you know a person's personal military service record is private unless that person releases it. The website you went to, that info is submitted by those who received a PH or is submitted by someone in their family for instance if the PH recipient was KIA.

Unless something has changed, military records (not military medical records) are available to the public under an FOIA request. I got one on someone about 10 yrs ago and the only thing blacked out was his social security no.

I just came across this which looks awfully suspicious:

Sailors stand together in An Thoi, Vietnam, on February 28, 1969, after a medal presentation for Silver Star action. From left: Del Sandusky, John Kerry, Gene Thorson, Thomas Belodeau. Kneeling from left, Mike Medeiros, Fred Short.

"In addition to Kerry's Silver Star PCF-94's performance on February 28 also earned Bronze Stars for Tommy Belodeau and Mike Medeiros and Navy Commendation Medals with Combat V Devices for Del Sandusky, Fred Short, and Gene Thorson." - Douglas Brinkley

I'm convinced that Kerry bought loyalty by giving out medals like they were hotcakes.
The reason Kerry is not in the purpleheart registry is that it requires a copy of your DD-214, and Kerry does not seem to want to release his records.
One last thing, upon returning from VN I served on DE-1038, the USS McCloy, named after John McCloy who earned 2 CMHs and 1 Navy Cross.

Note that the procedure used as a basis for Kerry exiting Vietnam does not mention "Purple Hearts". It only says "wounded three times." The Wounds, not the Purple Hearts were the operative item in invoking the language of the procedure.

From the Reassignment Request:

www.johnkerry.com/pdf/jkmilservice/Thrice_Wounded_Reassignment.pdf

R 170730Z Mar 69
FM COMCOSRON ONE

A. BUPERSINST 1300.39

1. LTJG John Forbes Kerry USNR has been thrice wounded in action while on duty incountry Vietnam. Reassignment is requested IAW Ref A.

2. LTJG Kerry req duty as personal aide in Boston, New Yor or Wash, D.C. area. If aide, assignment not avail then any assignment considered qualified for.

3. LTJG Kerry presently on full duty status and available for reassignment.

Clarification on procedure:
www.campaigndesk.org/archives/000451.asp

The Campaign Desk
Critique and analysis of 2004 campaign coverage from Columbia Journalism Review

(snip)

The policy in question, the impenetrably-named BUPERS Instruction 1300.39, is no longer in place. During Vietnam, it mandated that any soldier "wounded three times, regardless of the nature of the wound or treatment required" should be "reassigned as having completed a full Vietnam tour with the hospital release date considered the tour completion date. They will not be ordered to Vietnam ..."

Furthermore, the official U.S. Navy document states that, "The commanding officer of an officer who is hospitalized and/or wounded under the above criteria will advise the Chief of Naval Personnel (Pers-B1) of the officer's location, duty status, and expected duration of hospitalization. Reassignment of the officer will be determined after consideration of his physical classification and on an individual basis."

An additional, virtually unreported section of the Navy code, notes that any soldier wishing to "waive reassignment under the purview of this Instruction must forward a written request to that effect to the Chief of Naval personnel (Pers-B) for final determination."

Kerry, of course, chose not to waive this order, and his commanding officers request for re-assignment can be viewed (PDF file) on the candidate's Web site.

This Command History Summary of Coastal Division 11, recently added to Kerry's website, notes two other sailors who received 3 purple hearts in 1969:

BM3 Stevens
LTJG Galvin

But the Kerry folks did a crappy job scanning the document, and the bottom got cut off. So we don't know if there were more.

One other interesting thing:

Kerry's listed as having received a Silver Star, but not a Bronze Star in 1969, according to this document. And Kerry's the only one listed as receiving a Silver Star.

As a military widow and mother, I can't do more than sit in the peanut gallery and urge you on, but my prayers are always with the men and women who serve our country, no what their station.

I think sKerry is a disgrace to everything America stands for, and I think he should co-habit with Hanoi Jane in whatever country she is loving now. (Hopefully, NVN) Neither of them deserve the freedoms they enjoy as US citizens. (The Bestids.)

I had the exact same question and did a search to find this thread. Wish somebody knew the answer.

Two questions:

1. How many other vets were released from combat for receiving three purple hearts, or three wounds?

2. How many of those happened in a three month period?
