I didn't know, sez gov's ex
2 hours, 43 minutes ago
BY MAGGIE HABERMAN, DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

The first wife of New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey said yesterday she didn't know her ex was gay until last week.

"He told me just before he went on TV," Kari Schutz said in a phone interview from British Columbia.

Schutz described the call from her ex-husband as "difficult," although she declined to give details. But asked if she had any idea of her husband's sexual identity during their marriage, she said, "I never knew."

The governor's second wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, also didn't learn her husband was gay until just days ago, sources said. One source said that McGreevey first told Dina about his affair with a man last week, but it wasn't until Wednesday that he told her he was certain he was gay and was going to come out of the closet.

McGreevey took to the airwaves Thursday to say he had had an affair with a man he didn't identify, and that he was resigning the governorship, effective Nov. 15.

Schutz said she and her ex-husband had "discussions" about a brewing scandal involving former McGreevey aide Golan Cipel, since named as the other man in the affair, when she and their daughter, Morag, visited less than two weeks ago. It was unclear whether the governor had insisted the allegations weren't true at the time.

She and McGreevey have talked repeatedly since his bombshell announcement.

"We've been in touch with him," Schutz said. "And we're just wanting our privacy back, and we support him 100% and wish him well."

"He's a wonderful father," she added, noting that they have stayed in close touch with each other and that he sees their 11-year-old daughter often.

"My main concern is for my daughter," she said of the media maelstrom surrounding her family. But Shutz has nothing but good will toward her ex-husband.

"He's been a wonderful governor, and that's how people should remember him," she said.

McGreevey met Schutz, a librarian, on a cruise in 1990. They married in Canada and moved into a condominium in Woodbridge, N.J., where McGreevey became mayor. Schutz wasn't happy as a political wife and split for her native Canada in 1994 with Morag.

The divorce became final in 1997. Later, as he was running for governor, McGreevey took the unusual step of sealing the divorce records, with Schutz's permission.

Wife #1 - maybe.

Wife #2 - no way.

I just wonder how their kid, Butters, is reacting to this.

Morag

This doesn't sound like a very common name. I wonder it's derivation.

I don't think we should beat up on the wives. I have seen women who have dated or married men the rest of us suspected were gay. Some women are insecure and unsure of their attractiveness and respond to (secretly) gay men because they are the first men who treat them as desirable. I think McGreevey's second wife is a victim here. Even if her husband confided his sexual confusion to her, I'll bet the implicit or explicit understanding was that he wouldn't be messing around.

I don't know what the first one looks like --- but the second one to me looks like one who might see herself as a trophy wife and as long as she had enough money for shopping and getting her hair done figured she was in a pretty good marriage. She might not have married him for sex in the first place but for his political position and money.

The first wife of New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey said yesterday she didn't know her ex was gay until last week.

That's because he isn't a homosexual. He is bisexual. In other words, he'll screw anything. Tammy Bruce, a former leader of NOW and a lesbian herself, said this on her talk radio show here in Los Angeles yesterday.

Although Ms. Bruce is still a lesbian, like many Americans who were formerly on the Left, she's the political light and now is a Republican who supports President Bush.

She ripped into McGreevey yesterday, saying that she believes he is a sexual impuslive who will have sex with anyone who'll drop their pants, male or female. She said he used the "I am a gay American" line to deflect attention away from his corruption. I agree with that assessment.

Yes, he's been just lovely! Sarcasm off.

"The divorce became final in 1997. Later, as he was running for governor, McGreevey took the unusual step of sealing the divorce records, with Schutz's permission."

I'd bet the first wife may have known.

So is "Fintan" (Celtic, actually), but I can't find anything references to the name Morag in my Celtic history or mythology books.

It sounds Celtic, though...

Morag

Gaelic meaning great

Not to be confused with Gay-Lick, which is another story entirely.

Perhaps McGreevey isn't "gay' at all, and merely concocted the lie to explain away the Cipel and other scandals, and boost his polls by appealing to the gay lobby.

He is bisexual.

And what are those? Aren't they just homosexuals who have women around to pretend to the public or their families? But then I always thought both Clintons were bisexuals.

Insecure women are attracted to gay men because when they are rejected, as they subconsiously expect to be, they can blame it on him being gay, not on themselves.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner! I believe this whole "I'm gay thing", while true is a pathetic attempt to cover the fact that this guy is totally corrupt. "I'm a gay American" is a great way to refute any attempt to go after him on corruption charges as gay bashing.

What kind of a 'wonderful govenor' puts a would be lover with no qualifications, who is not even an American citizen, in charge of the SECURITY OF THE PEOPLES OF HIS STATE?

Talk about mocking terrorism, talk about laughing at the security of his own people, talk about feeling so secure in the democratic cabal of NJ that he knows he can get awqay with it-at least for several months....talk about hoping the hefty salary that goes with director of homeland security for NJ would get him into his would be lovers overflowing gratitude and with luck, pants....geeeeeeeez

McGreevy should be tossed out NOW!

The democrats have no decency. Has even one of the big time democrats in our nation called for this creep to step down now?

The democrats have lost it, big time.
