Former FBI Director Louis Freeh had agreed to become New Jersey's Homeland Security Director in 2002, but Gov. James McGreevey instead chose his unqualified boyfriend Golan Cipel for the post, a report unearthed Friday by national radio host Sean Hannity reveals.
While the mainstream press has yet to explore the explosive new angle in the McGreevey scandal, Hannity's coverage of the March 17, 2002, New York Times report shows the lengths to which the New Jersey Democrat was willing to compromise his state's security to satisfy his personal needs. "Attorney General John J. Farmer Jr., with the help of Carson Dunbar, the superintendent of the State Police at the time, persuaded Louis J. Freeh, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to accept a nonpaying post as head of the state's homeland security task force," the paper reported.Gov. McGreevey initially favored former U.S. Attorney Herbert Stern for the top security post, but as the Times noted:
"Mr. Stern declined the offer, according to Mr. McGreevey, who subsequently chose an Israeli citizen whom he had met on a visit to the Middle East, Golan Cipel, as his special counsel on homeland security at an annual salary of $110,000."
Though the personal component of McGreevey's relationship with Cipel was not yet known, the decision to snub a former FBI director for the unqualified foreigner raised eyebrows at the time.
"The appointment of Mr. Cipel, a published poet and public relations specialist who had worked on Mr. McGreevey's election campaign, puzzled some Democrats and enraged Republicans," the Times said, "particularly since the governor had established a post in the attorney general's office to direct counterterrorism efforts."
Since McGreevey's resignation announcement on Thursday, press coverage has focused on his decision to come out of the closet, with many reports calling the move "courageous."
But little attention has been given to McGreevey's gross betrayal of the security interests of his constituents, as illustrated by his decision to snub Freeh for the Homeland Director's post.
The Times has yet to revisit its own report on the Freeh-Cipel episode since the McGreevey scandal broke.
Since Hannity's coverage on Friday, no other news outlet has mentioned the fact that the New Jersey Democrat picked Cipel for the top security spot, when he could he could have had the nation's one-time top law enforcement officer.
Freeh's offer was a surprize to me too, when I heard it Friday.
LOL
nice pun !
Thank you for posting. This is a MOST SERIOUS Abuse of Power by McGreevy, Endangering the Safety of NJ Citizens and All other US Citizens by Rejecting Louis Freeh, A Preeminent Law Enforcement Official and Terror Expert for a no body. Horrible!!!!!!!!
Guess he just felt like climbing the Golan heights, instead
Or this one
rimshot
What's with the kid's claim that he's not gay? Can someone explain New Jersey politics to me?
ps: Someone has suggested a tee shirt, using McGreedy's image on the front- with the caption "The Love Guv"; and-let's see: How 'bout a picture of Mc Greedy and Cipel-close together-on the back ? Caption: New Jersey and You: Perfect together !
Is that nice pun, or nice....something else?
If this is true McGreevey should be tried for treason, and if found guilty should face a firing squad. Vote Democrat and vote for your own death! The people of New Jersey are buffoons!!! They should be marching on Trenton right now and throwing this traitor into the street and out of office immediately. And...if gays had an ounce of sense at all, they would be joining the rest of the folks in getting rid of this piece of human vermin!!!
The "Old Gray Lady" should have its editorial staff explore the question,
Which Democrat did less for his constituents and more for his pecker, Bill Clinton or Jimmy McGreevy?
Louis Freeh in an unpaid position demonstrates that the labor market has an unerring ability to set the proper price on an individual's service. We excoriated Freeh when he was a Clinton enabler in Washington. Why should he be qualify as a White Knight now?
But that does not lessen the scandal of McGreevey choosing a boy-toy for this sensitive position. There were, without a doubt, plenty of people in the State of New Jersey who would be more qualified for Homeland Security.
BTW, not for nuthin', but this story follows the patterns of a classic "honey trap". The mark meets the operative in a seeminly chance encounter, and a relationship is established. The operative then uses the position of trust to comprimise the mark and infiltrate the mark's organization.
Now, I'm not saying that Golan Cipel is an agent of a foreign intelligence service, but his actions are consistent with the way an agent of a foreign intelligence service would act.
The new isult I heard my kids bash eachother with last night was, "You act like the Gov."
Louis Freeh just does not look as fetching in tight jeans.
What did he tap? Did he tap dat.....
now we are getting to the salient points of this sandal - this affair highlights an ugly truth about many Democrats: faced with a choice of illicit sex or national security, the illicit sex wins every time. (see gays in the military, Clinton with Monica while conducting business, Barney Frank - prime blackmail material - U.S. congressman)
Hugh Hannity fan here, but Rush seriesly did mention "Is it any wonder that they film 'The Soprano's' in N.J.
Great point.
