Limits sought on Border Patrol
Washington Times ^ | 8/17/04 | Jerry Seper

Posted on 08/16/2004 10:57:00 PM PDT by kattracks

The Department of Homeland Security wants to restrict the U.S. Border Patrol's arrest of illegal aliens in the nation's interior, concerned that the recent apprehension of 450 illegals by agents in inland areas of Southern California failed to consider the "sensitivities" of those detained.
According to department sources, a formal written policy under review would limit Border Patrol arrests to areas along the nation's 7,000 miles of international border and give U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) the responsibility for enforcing immigration laws in the nation's interior.
But ICE officials have acknowledged that it has neither the manpower nor the resources to carry out an extensive interior-enforcement program. Between 8 million and 12 million illegal aliens are thought to be in the United States.
ICE has only 2,300 agents committed to interior-enforcement efforts, and they concentrate on finding the 80,000 criminal aliens on the nation's streets and 320,000 foreign nationals known as "absconders," who fled after being ordered deported.
In recent weeks, ICE supervisors also have been asked to "closely scrutinize all expenditures and curtail spending to the maximum extent possible."
Under the pending policy, according to the sources, Homeland Security would restrict the Border Patrol to the arrest of illegal aliens traveling north from the border, others at border highway checkpoints and illegals at transportation centers, such as international airports.

The Bush administration is floating into a state of maximum denial and silence on this issue. What annoys me most is the lack of candor in the Bush administration as to the real choices and options this nation must grapple with on the illegal immigration issue. Dammit, the Bush administration is not engaged and AWOL on this issue. Bush need not become nativist to become engaged. What he does need to become, is a bit more explicit in defending his policies and why and in detail. This beyond the curtain stuff is craven and disgusting. And I don't think political realities cut it. Americans are looking for intelligent non nativist leadership on this issue, and so far, nobody is providing it of any import - it is the null set, nada.

Your homeboys are on vacation, so you'll have to call their instate numbers. We can call the Whitehouse, however:

202-45202-456-1111

Homeland Security: dhs.gov

They think we're all sitting on the beach sipping Mai Tais. Time to let them know we're watching every move they make and we'll vote accordingly.

Did you see Condi Rice on O'Reilly a few days ago? It was ridiculous. He repeatedly asked her about the borders (what with terrorists coming over, and all); and posited his well-known opinion that there should be military guarding this area.

She gave some lame answer about not wanting to shut down "trade." WHO is talking about shutting down "trade?" What she really means, but will not say, is that they don't want to shut down the "trade" of cheap labor.

Unfortunately for them, the American people are starting to realize that this foolish "cheap" labor is simply being subsidized by the taxpayers. We may need some, but they've thrown the doors open wide. They've also thrown the doors wide open to the drug trade, and terrorists. They all make me sick (BOTH parties); AND they might yet get another few thousand of us killed in their little "deal with the devil."

We don't need them at all. There are plenty of people out of work, including jobs for high school kids and college students that can't find work. There is enough legal immigrants to fill in for the rest.

They're costing us a fortune in taxes and giving us nothing but headaches in return. Enough is enough. I'm tired of subsidizing the campaign donor's cheap labor.

Oh, I agree with you. The thing that FINALLY has people (in areas other than the already-overtaken West Coast) noticing it is the schools. Hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars going to educate children of illegals, at the expense of the quality of education for our own children, has finally hit home.

Perfect example: Our "rag of record" prints about one sob story per week about some poor "immigrant" family that may be deported. This week's example was a family that has been living here for about six years. They dragged all of their children here with them (so none are fictional citizens). This family alone has cost over $120,000 in taxpayer dollars for educational expense. I'm sure that the "fine" employer has another dozen illegals on his payroll. This employer should be in the Fed Pen for theft.

ICE is controlled by legacy Customs. From what I have seen so far, ICE has little interest in app'ing illegal aliens. If legacy Customs can get a good haul in money and property they will do an illegal alien operation. If there are 10 illegals simply standing on the street corner in the interior of the US you can forget about it, ICE isn't interested. Of course, some of us will go against policy and arrest illegals anywhere.

Now take a look at the two above paragraphs. The first one says it is policy set in stone, the second says it is under review.

Can anybody say bad journalism, to inflame knee jerkers like you.

The current administration has failed, and continues to fail when it comes to protecting Americans on American soil.

This "proposal" is just another example of the complete and utter negligence exhibited by our elected.

The next attack, when it comes, will be the result not of "intelligence failures" or "lack of communication" between the various departments of the government, but a willful dereliction of duty by our "leaders".

"Why don't you read the article and see it is a proposal and that that many proposals are brought up and never enacted."

Mr. Hutchinson is pressured to halt interior enforcement - that's not a "proposal" - that's fact. He wouldn't even answer a simple question whether or not interior arrests would continue. The BP squad which did the arrests has been "reassigned" - that too is not a "proposal".

Defend them all you wish. Either you're FOR border enforcement which includes the arrests of those ALL over America who are equally illegal, or you're not. Not one in the Bush Admin has demonstrated enough testicular fortitude on the issue to tell Bush he's wrong - seriously wrong in his position. Americans want enforcement FIRST - then we'll get to the point we can be more "sensitive".

I identified this as a proposal.

The problem is far worse than what is stated in the article.

Thousands of non-Americans stroll into our country illegally each day.

Many of them may indeed be "terrorists".

It is unacceptable.

Same in TX. Whites are now a minority in TX because of all the illegal aliens. I was in the city last week and felt like I was in Mexico and the odd man out. There has definitely been a huge influx of illegals in recent months because I'd never seen the numbers of Mexicans before. The kids say there's more in school this year too. We seriously are being taken over by a concerted effort.

Do you mean this:

"According to department sources, a formal written policy under review.."

Where is it said a "formal written policy" is merely a "proposal"? It is under "review", which only means until struck down, the policy will stand as SOP.

Apparently you've not followed the article closely enough to see the options of interior enforcement has been diminished by the recent actions taken by the Admin and when enforcement is taken out of BP's authority, will be nonexistent under the current "formal written policy".

Those prostitute politicians are bought off by felon companies/persons who financially benefit from Illegalien "cheap labor". Those are the ones contributing most to the campaigns than honest, law abiding Americans. Politicians of both parties are corrupt.

I'd like to see a list published of "more generous" contributors compared with a list of persons/companies that benefit most directly from illegal labor. I'm certain I won't be surprized.

In a letter, Mr. Hutchinson, undersecretary for border and transportation security, assured Rep. Joe Baca, California Democrat — and other members of the state's delegation who complained about the arrests — that in the future, Homeland Security would enforce immigration laws "in a reasonable manner" and would consider the "sensitivities" surrounding the enforcement of those laws in its interior-enforcement program.
