Canadians who've spent the summer wondering when all the hot weather will arrive aren't alone in their grumbling. Scientists at the University of Alabama say this summer has been the coldest the world has seen since 1992.
The fall in average worldwide temperature has apparently been going on since March. But researchers say they're not sure why the thermostat has dropped this year.
In the Northern Hemisphere, July's temperatures were below the 20-year average by .14 degrees Celsius and in the Southern Hemisphere by .29 degrees, said John Christy, a professor of atmospheric science at the Alabama university. Both the tropics and Antarctica showed marked coolness.
Rick Walls, a meteorologist at Environment Canada in Winnipeg, says in the eastern Prairies, it could be the coldest summer on record since data started being collected in the 19th century. He says between May and mid-August, temperatures in the region were on average three degrees below normal, beating records that go back to 1872.
In weather terms, that 's a massive drop.
But then, coastal British Columbia has been experiencing one of its hottest summers on record, with Victoria and Vancouver enjoying their second-warmest July on record.
In Victoria, July was the second warmest in records that go back to 1898, and a similar record-setting month was experienced in Vancouver, where temperatures were on average 2.2 degrees above the monthly average.
Scientists say the summer isn't completely lost. Early data this month suggests the cooling trend has been reversing.
Re-elect W! He has solved the global warming problem.
AHHH! Run! The stratosphere has inverted!!
I haven't used the A/C in two weeks!
Canadian environmentalists are furious. It's too cold to organize a proper march against global warming.
I only have two things to say:
- The timing of this cold summer is suspicious!
- It's George W. Bush's fault!
Yessss! I'm in New England, and I'm loving it! I've hiked more this Summer than I have in the last five years.
If it weren't for global warming, we would have probably had snow in west tennessee last week. We had high temps in the 70's. Bite me Algore, it was beautiful weather
"...coastal British Columbia has been experiencing one of its hottest summers on record, with Victoria and Vancouver enjoying their second-warmest July on record."
We've had a very nice summer here in western Washington, many days in the 80's and 90's.
Time for the enviro-wackjobs to switch their tune back to global-cooling theory abandoned in the 1970's.
Too cold ? ... move South ... we have room in the west.
Just out of curiosity, is it cooler this summer, on a global basis?
They aren't kidding about BC and Vancouver. I live in the Seattle area, and this summer has been freaking miserable.
Week after week of hot sunshiney days, and few houses in this area have air conditioning of any kind, for obvious reasons.
We have been consistently in the upper 80's for weeks. Bring on autumn!
Didn't get past the first sentence, did you?
I'm loving it!
That having been said, the summer has been quite pleasant.
Remember: global cooling is CAUSED by global warming!
I'm with you. Give me a "cool" summer like this one has been over a summer filled with endless hot, humid, sticky days any year! :-)
"Texans are loving it"
Yup. Today it was a balmy 94 instead of 104. 10 degrees DOES make a difference.
No kidding! Here in the hill country we have had our a/c off at night all summer, and only started using it in the daytime in mid-July. It has been almost chilly in the early morning since Sunday, too. It was cool last summer, but not like this-does this mean a new Ice Age that was brought on by Bush? Ahhhhhhhhhhhh-we're all doomed!
Yes it has been a nice summer in Texas, hasn't it? I hardly ever get to say that!
Isn't it amazing? Highs of 86º in the middle of August? Usually it's high 106º. Actually using my back porch during the day!
Wait- I'm NOT going to melt in my pantyhose, leaving a puddle of sweat where I stand? Food WON'T cook inside a car on a sunny day, when the dashboard MELTS at over 120 degrees? Summer won't begin in April and go till October, and my utility bill for 'cooling' won't equal my monthly rent? No more Christmases wearing summer clothes while 'Frosty the Snowman' is played and the central air is cranked up?
And this is a BAD thing?
Anyone who SAYS they like summer should spend and entire one in New Orleans. 6 months + of literally smothering humdidity, nighttime lows in the 80's and sometimes 90's and heat so bad you literally think your head is going to explode.
You don't know heat till you've experienced relentless, 100% humidity swamp heat in New Orleans.
Wouldn't mind me some nuclear winter AT ALL!
This is the best Texas summer that I can remember.
send a little rain and coolness this way, will ya?
btt
It is global warming which is Bush's fault.
I lived in NO and had to spen two months (Feb/Mar) in CT. On my return, I broke out in a sweat at the airport.
But it was better than repeatedly waking up to the alarm radio with them announcing that the temperature was MINUS SEVEN DEGREES!
Well, here in Maryland we're not only having a cold summer, we're having a WET one, too. I don't ever remember a summer like this. It rains 3-4 days per week. People's gardens and fruit are rotting. Our windowsills are rotting. Our driveways are rotting....you get the picture.
except real estate and the stock market, if the fed has anything to do with it.
He would love this summer.
***Scientists at the University of Alabama say this summer has been the coldest the world has seen since 1992.***
Perhaps it's because there is less hot air coming from Washington since the Republicans took over!
What makes a balloon go up?
Hot air!
What holds a Democrat down?
delightful isnt it?
Ill be out on the porch soon myself
Yes it is, and in the Pacific Ocean beyond California, another El Nino cycle has been detected. (Perhaps it is not W's fault after all.)
My electric bills haven't even hit $120, and I haven't had to water once this year.
Thank God! (literally!)
my electric was 250 but I keep it 75 in here and I water the garden but not often.
but heck its 100 when Im using nothing
I take it that they don't teach Americans about the effects of El Nino and La Nina in Grade 9 Geography class.
Canadian Grade 9 graduates would sneer at those who dismiss cautions about global warming on the basis of *one* summer.
They would also caution against treating all environmental catastrophe prophesies as valid.
No, no, no...Canada is too cool this summer. It's just got to be Bush's fault. (BTW, did you know that John Kerry was in Vietnam? Even if cooling Canada was Kerry's fault, it wouldn't be his fault because he's a "hero.")
Ditto! I didn't move here for the freakin' sun! The lack of air conditioning makes heat, for any length of time, just about intolerable. There's no escape. The only saving grace is that there's no humidity.
I want the clouds, the rain, the grey - and I want it now!
This is also why summer retail sales have been in a slump. I have a store, and am thankful that I have a buoyant service business to make up for the weather slump.
I can deal with the cool summers as long as they come along with warm winters:)
Soon the icy arms of glaciers will reach down the mountains, and mammoths will come ambling out of the North...
Canadian Grade 9 graduates would sneer at those who dismiss cautions about global warming on the basis of *one* summer.
Do they teach the global warming bunk about Earths temperature rising 10 degrees in the next 100 years?Have any of these folks ever considered an event such as "the year without a summer" screwing up all their computer models for a 20 year stretch?
Eeeeeek it's global warming.....oh wait.....global cooling....we're going to drown....uh....freeze. Oh, I'm so confused.
We just can't HAVE these 'citizens' going around acting 'as if' they have some GOD(censored)-given 'right' to self-determination!!! ...or ANY "rights" at all, for that matter. That just won't FIT' into our 'grand plan' for them, and for the world.
...and we MUST ensure that John Kerry is ELECTED...no matter WHAT we have to do to get it done. We can't have another four years of Bush and risk his undoing all that we have 'accomplished'...all our 'progress'(sic) under the Clintons."
