Canada not alone in bemoaning cool summer
CTV ^ | 08.18.2004 | staff

Posted on 08/18/2004 2:47:25 PM PDT by SolidSupplySide

Canadians who've spent the summer wondering when all the hot weather will arrive aren't alone in their grumbling. Scientists at the University of Alabama say this summer has been the coldest the world has seen since 1992.

The fall in average worldwide temperature has apparently been going on since March. But researchers say they're not sure why the thermostat has dropped this year.

In the Northern Hemisphere, July's temperatures were below the 20-year average by .14 degrees Celsius and in the Southern Hemisphere by .29 degrees, said John Christy, a professor of atmospheric science at the Alabama university. Both the tropics and Antarctica showed marked coolness.

Rick Walls, a meteorologist at Environment Canada in Winnipeg, says in the eastern Prairies, it could be the coldest summer on record since data started being collected in the 19th century. He says between May and mid-August, temperatures in the region were on average three degrees below normal, beating records that go back to 1872.

In weather terms, that 's a massive drop.

But then, coastal British Columbia has been experiencing one of its hottest summers on record, with Victoria and Vancouver enjoying their second-warmest July on record.

In Victoria, July was the second warmest in records that go back to 1898, and a similar record-setting month was experienced in Vancouver, where temperatures were on average 2.2 degrees above the monthly average.

Scientists say the summer isn't completely lost. Early data this month suggests the cooling trend has been reversing.

- It's George W. Bush's fault!

If it weren't for global warming, we would have probably had snow in west tennessee last week. We had high temps in the 70's. Bite me Algore, it was beautiful weather

We've had a very nice summer here in western Washington, many days in the 80's and 90's.

Just out of curiosity, is it cooler this summer, on a global basis?

They aren't kidding about BC and Vancouver. I live in the Seattle area, and this summer has been freaking miserable.

Week after week of hot sunshiney days, and few houses in this area have air conditioning of any kind, for obvious reasons.

We have been consistently in the upper 80's for weeks. Bring on autumn!

No kidding! Here in the hill country we have had our a/c off at night all summer, and only started using it in the daytime in mid-July. It has been almost chilly in the early morning since Sunday, too. It was cool last summer, but not like this-does this mean a new Ice Age that was brought on by Bush? Ahhhhhhhhhhhh-we're all doomed!

Wait- I'm NOT going to melt in my pantyhose, leaving a puddle of sweat where I stand? Food WON'T cook inside a car on a sunny day, when the dashboard MELTS at over 120 degrees? Summer won't begin in April and go till October, and my utility bill for 'cooling' won't equal my monthly rent? No more Christmases wearing summer clothes while 'Frosty the Snowman' is played and the central air is cranked up?
And this is a BAD thing?
Anyone who SAYS they like summer should spend and entire one in New Orleans. 6 months + of literally smothering humdidity, nighttime lows in the 80's and sometimes 90's and heat so bad you literally think your head is going to explode.
You don't know heat till you've experienced relentless, 100% humidity swamp heat in New Orleans.
Wouldn't mind me some nuclear winter AT ALL!

Dittos here in Dallas. We got 12 inches of rain in just a few hours a couple of weeks back. It's not unusual to go an entire August without a drop of rain.

This is the best Texas summer that I can remember.

I lived in NO and had to spen two months (Feb/Mar) in CT. On my return, I broke out in a sweat at the airport.

But it was better than repeatedly waking up to the alarm radio with them announcing that the temperature was MINUS SEVEN DEGREES!

Please... environmentalists seek out facts that support their propaganda. Global warming is natural part of the cyclical climate on earth. So, if regional temperature trends support their cause in making it seem that humans are causing a climatological cataclysm, then use them.

I take it that they don't teach Americans about the effects of El Nino and La Nina in Grade 9 Geography class.

Canadian Grade 9 graduates would sneer at those who dismiss cautions about global warming on the basis of *one* summer.

They would also caution against treating all environmental catastrophe prophesies as valid.

Ditto! I didn't move here for the freakin' sun! The lack of air conditioning makes heat, for any length of time, just about intolerable. There's no escape. The only saving grace is that there's no humidity.
