MoveOn Ads Okay; Swift Boat Ads Not Okay, Kerry Campaign Says
CNSNEWS.com ^ | 8/290/04 | Susan Jones

Posted on 08/20/2004 8:01:00 AM PDT by kattracks

(CNSNews.com) - The Bush campaign has suggested that Sen. John Kerry join President Bush in calling off the dogs -- those "shadowy" 527 groups that run ads for and against Bush and Kerry.

The liberal group MoveOn.org and the anti-Kerry group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are both 527s, named after a section of the tax code.

But on Friday, a spokeswoman for the Kerry campaign backed away from the suggestion. She said what MoveOn.org is doing is perfectly fine, while what the Swift Boat Veterans are doing is "dishonest" and "dishonorable."

Debra Deshong of the Kerry campaign told Fox News there's a difference between MoveOn.org and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth: "MoveOn.org is an independent organization that existed well before the Kerry campaign," she said, whereas Swift Boat Veterans for Truth "is not an independent group."

Deshong invoked Friday's New York Times article as proof: "And in today's New York Times, it details exactly all the ties this group (Swift Boat Veterans for Truth) has to the Bush White House."

Deshong condemned Bush for not telling Swift Boat Veterans for Truth to stop running their ad. (Swift Boats say it wouldn't matter what Bush said -- see related story)

"Again, we (the Kerry campaign) have nothing to do with these independent ads, like MoveOn.org. That is an independent organization that existed well before the Kerry campaign. They have every right to be running what they are under the campaign finance laws." According to Deshong, "This is about the Swift Boat Vets that are running dishonorable ads that Bush refuses to condemn."

What about the barrage of 527 ads thrown at President Bush? a Bush campaign spokeswoman asked on Friday.

"The fact is, not only has this president had over $62 million dollars spent attacking him by these shadowy groups, but let's not forget about Michael Moore's movie," said Bush campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise, also speaking on Fox News. She noted that for weeks, Americans could "hardly turn on a TV" without seeing Michael Moore "launch unbelievable attacks on this president."

Millerwise said the Bush campaign would rather focus on the major issues -- including Sen. Kerry's spotty attendance at Senate Intelligence Committee hearings.

Actually, it was the Republicans that tried to get the courts to block these 527's earlier this year. It was the Democrats that fought in favor of them.

It was fine until the attacks turned against the Democrat candidate.

I heard the Kerry campaign people spinning this.

Their basis for their claim is that MoveOn is older than Kerry's primary victory, and SVFT is new. Then they point at the funding.

The fact that funding between MoveOn and SVFT show the same party line partisanship, with Soros for the Dems, and Perry for the Repubs. Also, the discrepancies between the level of funding of the two groups is ignored by the Kerry campaign spinmeisters. $170 million to MoveOn, compared to much less than a million yet raised by SVFT. And the discrepancy is even greater if you consider that Soros has so far donated at least $5 million, whereas, Perry has donated somewhere in the area of $200k.

So, the Dems are employing the tactic that assumes the American voting public is stupid, and they are throwing crap up as fast as they can and hoping that it sticks.

Keep the story alive, Kerry! :) Hire Joe Lockhart, claim Bush is behind the ads, etc. etc. Keep talking endlessly about Vietnam in this world of Al Qaeda, a growing economy, Iraq, etc.

Living in the past is such a GREAT way of winning the presidency.

It was a good move by the President.

If all 527's, including moveon, get shut down, the libs will only have Air America in a few markets to spew their hate. Meanwhile, the swifties television ads would be lost too but they only air in a couple markets, and Rush and Hannity will be able to continue to get the word out nationwide on what they are alleging.

Good response from Bush's people so far. I disagree with them that all 527's or anyone else should not speak. But at least they apply their rules to everyone. I say let everyone say whatever they want to say. Let the voters beware just like buyers beware. It's our responsibility to sort it out before we vote.

Hear, hear.

Ker-jillions spent on anti-Bush commercials, films etc., and no one bats a bloodshot, media-sated eye. One under-funded rabble of America-loving veterans airs a few commercials in a few swing states and the entire center-left establishment loses bladder control.

Way to go, guys.

The more they attack the Swift Boat Veterans, the better. Kerry hasn't figured out that the only response to the Swifties is to say, "I greatly respect their service but their recollections are different than mine."

But, using the "nuts and sluts" approach will backfire bigtime.

And a few others.

According to the WP article, "The dispute is unlikely to end soon. John O'Neill, a member of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and author of the anti-Kerry book "Unfit for Command," said the group raised nearly $500,000 from 10,000 donors in recent days."

Ergo, because the group is funded by a Texas Republican, John Kerry is innocent of the claims made against him.

At first I couldn't believe my ears. Then I realized "this is nothing new ... the Kerry campaign is the master of hypocrisy." What was even more amazing is that she used the NYT's article to support her claim ... an article which SHOULD be an Editorial. I couldn't believe it. But ... then ... I can. I don't put any EVIL past these people. They are monsters. The NYT and the rest of the MSM should be stripped of their Press Credentials and subjected to Campaign Finance Laws ... think of the BILLIONS of dollars of advertising that all the media's news reports would cost if they were "ad time." Think about the NYT. How much would that hit-piece today have cost if it were an ad???

Flash traffic. Confidence is high; I repeat; confidence IS high.

Let's face it, though. John Kerry could have done at least the following things:
---taken the Americans hostage in Iran;
---tried to assassinate President Reagan;
---blown up the Challenger;
---tried to assassinate President Bush 41;
---bombed the World Trade Center;
---blown up the Murrah building in Oklahoma City
---killed our forces in Mogadishu, Somalia, Kosovo, et. al;
---had sex with an intern;
---planned the attacks of 9-11

and he would still get at least 35% of the vote on November 2, for the simple reason that he's not (PRESIDENT) Bush.
