just got a slightly faster web connection and am looking to download come quality freebies ;)
What do you consier absolute "must-have" freeware programs?
All opinions greatly appreciated.
Best free program for getting rid of temporary files and cookies
This is an amazing free program. Its called CleanUp.
It gets rid of all temporary files and cookies on your computer. It free's disk space and reduces the "clutter" on your computer helping it to run more efficiently. Since i'v been using this, my computer runs so much faster.
Adaware and Spybot for spyware. These are by far the best free spyware programs. I use both of them.
ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your web application already includes spell checking functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of maintaining separate ones on each application.
Software saves you from those embarrassing misspelled titles on FR.
The Firefox web browser.

winrar: unzips and unpacks almost any compresssed file in a very simple way and unpacks it to right where youi want it
msconfig which is free, comes with some windows OS (XP,98,ME) and is great for getting rid of programs churning in the background
hijackthis: gets rid of unwanted (malicious)browser plug ins
These kids are wearing Favo Ties. . .
The "Mozilla" Browser Suite. Not only is it immune to all the viruses and security holes that plague Internet Explorer, it can handle your email and newsgroups. The built-in web page program and customizable tabbed browsing makes this a keeper.
I found a nice Free Antivirus program. My Norton AV just expired so I can't get new virus updates. This one looks very good. The version for home workstations is free.
Ok, Adaware is the best free spyware. Its finds up so many spyware programs on your computer. But there are spyware programs that Adaware didn't pick up, that Spybot did pick up. Its best to use both of them. If you were going to use one of them. I would use Adaware.
Steel Panthers full game...free...it's about a 500mb download
Why not subscribe for another year of updates?
Open Office v1.1
This is a full office suite, FREEWARE...
It's essentially Windows Office 97, or Sun's StarOffice..( formerly freeware, bought by Sun, now sold by them in enhanced form.. )
There is NO E-MAIL in the freeware versions.. Use Outlook, Eudora, Mozilla, Thunderbird ( Firefox compliment e-mail program..)
Windows version is approx. 64 megabytes...
Also some good download managers, like GoZilla, etc.. on download page..
I planned to mention grisoft's AVG antivirus program as well. The program updates automatically when necessary and even these updates are free. So I'll second your recommendation.
Linux -- it cures clippityitis
And here's a good Freeware Site to start your own personal search for software that piques your interest..
with Audiograbber you can record streaming audio to listen to later, or to burn to cd. (If you're interested in streaming audio, you'll also want/need the latest Real Player, Winamp, and of course Windows Media Player).
go to publicradio.com for a tv-guide of streaming public-radio programs, and links to their sites (many archive their programs).
also Kazaa Lite, for file-exchange of music files.
also, see download.com. you can set the search criteria for "freeware".
I switched over to Ad-Aware for my spyware nuking pleasure.
War Driving or Chalking?
I use, or have available, almost all of the security and drive clutter clearing software mentioned on this thread. What a serious internet-surfer absolutely needs:
System Security Suite
I also use Add-Remove Pro rather than the Add-Remove in Windows control panel. Tweakui XP is a good one to have, as is Reg Cleaner.
Once a month I run msconfig to keep the start-up programs to a minimum.
With a cable connection running on average at 350kbs, I don't want to see the "hourglass" thingy on my screen at all.
thanks to everyone...lots of great stuff. Keep em coming! :)
No knock-offs - but the actual games coded into roms on the original arcade boxes. All done in the name of history preservation.
Must be seen to be appreciated!
??? I just checked for updates after reading that & there was a new one.
A brand of cereal?
FTP Commander is a very easy & small program for uploading files. http://www.internet-soft.com/
Interesting. I checked a couple of days ago and there hadn't been any updates for weeks. That's why I dumped it and got Ad-Aware.
Spybot had an update yesterday. It found a trojan, StartPage-EH, that Ad-Aware SE didn't detect.
Yes indeed. I've got a quarter of one 200 gig hard drive devoted solely to ROM storage, care, and feeding. Love it.
Well, I'll be reinstalling it then. It worked well for me when there were updates available. Thanks for the heads-up.
I'm running AdAware v1.3 - is "SpyBot S&D" still required or recommended?
Several on this thread have found new updates for Spybot. If there are updates available, I highly recommend it - it worked very well for me when I had it installed.
Thanks AGS - if I'm using the latest version of AdAware v1.3, is SpyBot S&D redundant?
I see no reason not to have both installed.
Spybot is still very alive, but download the latest program, I think it is 1.3.
Also, Adaware is also new so it should be downloaded and installed. In both cases it is best to uninstall the old programs before installing the new. Not really necessary, but it is cleaner and causes less problems.
A great resource for freeware is the freeware newsgroup. There are alternate sources for just about every program out there,
Yes. When I nuke a program, I nuke it completely (including checking the registry to make sure all traces are gone). I'll have to get the latest version anyway.
