Combined with general risk factor I would rather W stayed away...

Agreed. I don't see the gain from this even if the secret had been kept. This isn't like Bush going to see the troops at Thanksgiving (and holding up a REAL turkey, by the way).

Maybe he is traveling to another location in the region and this is just the cover story.

Maybe this was a ruse to get Kerry to "Me Too" and haul-ass to Athens ahead of him.

If Bush goes, Kerry is sure to follow.

http://afamilyinbaghdad.blogspot.com/ says that Iraqis are eating up Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11.

Why would Bush go somewhere where he is almost guaranteed to be greeted with boos?

Maybe, maybe not.

The American team members have been greeted warmly.

Greeks love America!

Or maybe Kerry's minions planted this story so when Bush does not go Kerry can go and will be seen cheered by the international community.

It was SI who said it. They quoted two Fallujahites and the coach.

I wonder what the other players had to say.

Well its because of Bush that the Iraq soccer team is able to play in the Olympics without getting killed afterwards if they lose any games. They should be dam greatful they can keep their heads when they go back home!

Members of the Iraqi soccer team fear reprisals to their families or to themselves when they get back home so they must be silent or anti-Bush.

He'd leave Lurch in the dust in ANY competition.

Iraqis are eating up Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11.

Well of course they are. These people were brought up and raised on Propaganda from when Saddam ruled. That is all they know. To them that is normal.

Well, it would certainly be gutsy on the part of our President. It sounds like something he'd do. And, he has every right to be there.

If he does this I'm going to be worrying 24/7 for his safety, though. I'm not sure announcing to the terrorists this far in advance he could be in attendance is a good thing. Obviously it can't be on the same scale of security as the Thanksgiving trip, but no reason it had to be leaked this far out.

If Iraq doesn't make it to the finals it kinda makes this a moot issue doesn't it?

I guess that is why he is waiting until August 28th to decide to do it.
